  • Purpose. This study was to identify the relationship between self-directed learning and nursing student's satisfaction of clinical practice. Methods. This study was designed to measure the level of satisfaction according to the contents, guidance, environment, time, and the evaluation of clinical practice. Two hundred thirty-one nursing student from baccalaureate program in H-gun was sampled. A scale consisting of 75 questions, developed by the researcher, was used to gather data from September 14 through 27, 2012. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, paired t-test, pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression using the SPSS WIN 18.0 program. Results. The results were summarized : Self-directed learning didn't show a significant different by grade(t=0.83, p=.934). Nursing student's satisfaction of clinical practice didn't show a significant different by grade(t=0.26, p=.798). The relationship between self-directed learning correlated with the degree of nursing student's satisfaction in clinical practice(r=.44, p<.001). The factors of self-directed learning described nursing student's satisfaction of clinical practice as $R^2$=.215(F=9.858, p<.001). Conclusions. It was found that a higher degree of satisfaction in clinical practice depends on a higher degree of self-directed learning. Therefore, nursing faculty should plan intervention to improve satisfaction level of clinical practice by fostering self-directed learning.

  • Purpose: Providing tutoring services may be one of the most effective practices for improving academic performance and student retention. However, there is little information on the difference between mandatory tutoring (MT) and voluntary tutoring (VT) on the impact of student academic performance. This investigation compared the effectiveness of VT and MT services in the three upper level undergraduate classes. Research design, data, and methodology: Baseline data were collected in a spring semester where no tutoring of any kind was offered (control group (CG), n=78). The MT (n=104) was required in the following fall semester, and in the next spring semester only VT (n=97) was offered. Descriptive statistics and One-way ANOVA using IBM SPSS v23 (Chicago, IL) were used to analyze the final grades of the courses to identify differences in final grades between semesters. Results: Although final grades averaged from three classes were highest in the MT group, there were no statistical differences between the MT and VT groups, F(2, 292) = 1.150, p =.318. Conclusion: This study indicates there was no significant difference in academic performance between the two tutoring types, but that both tutoring services can be effective.

  • This study was to explore factors determining school-based student health screening participation. Participants were six health coordinators in West Virginia, the United States. They have responsibilities in the student health screening and conducted a phone interview. The results are as follows. First, opt-in of health screening came from the interest in students' health, peer pressure, and free screening. Second, opt-out of health screening came from the indifference to a school newsletter, anxiety about an information disclosure, and the fear of drawing blood. Third, the advantage of health screening was provided for free. Fourth, the primary decision-maker was parents, but sometimes was children. Fifth, non-family members also influenced on the participation in the health screening. Therefore, a school newsletter, parents and teachers education, and free screening may be required to improve the participation rate.

Results: 1) The focus group showed mean $17.40{\pm}12.45$ in the knowledge about smoking. The knowledge about smoking was significantly different among general subject characteristics of age(F=4.84, p=.008), grade(t=2.96, p=.003), major(F=5.93, p=.001), and religion(t=2.96, p=.003). 2) The focus group showed mean $23.69{\pm}16.19$ in their attitude about smoking. The attitude about smoking was significantly different among general subject characteristics of age(F=8.15, p=.000), grade(t=-2.33, p=.020), major(F=8.35, p=.000), and residence(t=3.08, p=.010). 3) The correlations between knowledge and attitude about smoking were positively correlated(p<0.01). Conclusion: The subjects knowledge about smoking was correlated with their attitude about smoking. Therefore, we need to develop various differential smoking prevention programs and extend the role of experts.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of microteaching for student health educators. Methods: Subjects included 43 students in the nursing department of "H" university. In order to measure the degree of self-efficacy and speech anxiety at pre-treatment and post-treatment, subjects in the experimental group underwent training in microteaching. Results: No significant difference of variance in self-efficacy and speech anxiety was observed between subjects in the experimental group and those in the control group. However, self-confidence, a sub-domain of self-efficacy, showed a significant increase from pretest to post-test. In addition, speech anxiety measured during the post-test showed improvement, when compared with that of the pretest. Conclusion: Findings of this study provide preliminary evidence that microteaching may result in improved speech behavior.

  • Background: Respiratory protection equipment (RPE) is the last resort to control exposure to workplace air pollutants. A comprehensive respiratory protection program (RPP) ensures that RPE is selected, used, and cared properly. Therefore, RPP must be well integrated into the occupational health and safety requirements. In this study, we evaluated the implementation of RPP in Iranian petrochemical industries to identify the required solutions to improve the current status of respiratory protection. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 24 petrochemical industries in Iran. The survey instrument was a checklist extracted from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration respiratory protection standard. An index, Respiratory Protection Program Index (RPPI), was developed and weighted by analytic hierarchy process to determine the compliance rate (CR) of provided respiratory protection measures with the RPP standard. Data analysis was performed using Excel 2010. Results: The most important element of RPP, according to experts, was respiratory hazard evaluation. The average value of RPPI in the petrochemical plants was $49{\pm}15%$. The highest and lowest of CR among RPP elements were RPE selection and medical evaluation, respectively. Conclusion: None of studied petrochemical industries implemented RPP completely. This can lead to employees' overexposure to hazardous workplace air contaminants. Increasing awareness of employees and employers through training is suggested by this study to improve such conditions.
