For the design of shear connection for the composite precast concrete slabs. it is necessary to investigate its strength, stiffness, slip capacity and fatigue endurance. For theme purposes, push-out tests were performed with variations of the stud shank diameter and the compressive strength of the mortar. From the experimental studies, it could be observed that the deformation of the shear studs in a full-depth precast concrete slabs were greater than those in a cast-in-place slabs. The static strength of the shear connections obtained agree approximately with those evaluated from the tensile strength of the stud shear connectors owing to the effect of the bedding layer between the slabs and the beams. An empirical equation for the initial shear stiffness of a shear connection was also proposed. On the basis of the push-out tests, a full-scale composite beams with 8.0m span was designed and fatigue tests were carried out to study the behaviour of the stud shear connection and its effects on the flexural behaviour of the beam. The bonding arid friction between the concrete slab and the steel beam considerably increased the fatigue endurance of the shear connection.

This paper deals with the shear capacity of corrugated rib as the shear connector in composite structures. Corrugated rib is modified as perfobond rib shear connector type to evaluate the shear capacity. A total 12 push-out specimens with stud, perfobond rib, and corrugated rib connector were fabricated. Then, the influences of hole-crossing bars, concrete dowel, depth of corrugated panel and height of rib on the shear capacity were evaluated experimentally. As the results of these tests, the failure mechanisms of corrugated rib and perfobond rib specimens were associated with the bearing failure of the concrete slabs, but the failure of weld zone did not occur. The shear capacity of corrugated rib specimens improved as high to 96% compared to the perfobond rib shear connectors. Also, the hole-crossing bars were effective on the improvement of concrete dowel action, and consequently, shear capacity increased by 48%. It was also proven that the increment of the depth of corrugated panel and the height of rib increased the concrete bearing resistance, therefore increasing the shear capacity.
The CFRP bar was used to achieve more ductile and durable headed-stud shear connectors in composite components. Three series of push-out tests were firstly conducted, including specimens reinforced with pure steel fibers, steel and CFRP bars. The distributed stress was measured by the commercial PPP-BOTDA (Pre-Pump-Pulse Brillouin optical time domain analysis) optical fiber sensor with high spatial resolution. A series of numerical analyses using non-linear FE models were also made to study the shear force transfer mechanism and crack response based on the test results. Test results show that the CFRP bar increases the shear strength and stiffness of the large diameter headed-stud shear connection, and it has equivalent reinforcing effects on the stud shear capacity as the commonly used steel bar. The embedded CFRP bar can also largely improve the shear force transfer mechanism and decrease the tensile stress in the transverse direction. The parametric study shows that low content steel fibers could delay the crack initiation of slab around the large diameter stud, and the CFRP bar with normal elastic modulus and the standard reinforcement ratio has good resistance to splitting crack growth in headed stud shear connectors.
As the height of the light-framed building increases, the lateral load and overturn-moment are increased and the possibility of the building overturn becomes larger. Because the shear wall resists lateral load in light-framed building, the reinforcement of shear wall is required. In order to reinforce the light-framed shear wall, using lag screw fastener type (B-HD) and using bolt type (S-HD) hold-down connectors were applied for test. And domestic larch lumbers, $38{\times}140mm$ and $89{\times}140mm$, KS 2nd grade, were used for the stud. The North American OSB panels were used for sheathing panel. Static loads, load speed 6 mm/min, were applied on top of the wall. As a result, shear strength of the wall that using hold-down connector was improved sufficiently. And when applying the S-HD type hold-down connector, stud should be reinforced against weakening by drilled hole. As increasing the number of lag screw, the number of bolt and the product allowable strength, the strength of shear wall that using hold-down connector was also increased. When applying hold-down connector to light-framed building using 38 mm stud, it must be reinforced by enlarging the thickness of stud like as 38 mm doubled column.
Typical composite girder has been composed with conventional concrete deck and steel girder. Recently, ultrahigh-performance-concrete (UHPC) deck is proposed in order to enhance durability and reduce weight of deck as well as to increase stiffness and strength of the composite girder. This study investigates that a headed stud is still compatible as a shear connector for the UHPC deck and steel girder composite beam. Twelve push-out specimens are prepared to evaluate the static strength of stud shear connectors embedded in the UHPC deck. The test program proves that the static strength of the stud shear connectors embedded in UHPC well meets with design codes described in AASHTO LRFD. Chosen experimental variables are aspect ratio of height to diameter of stud, thickness of deck and thickness of concrete cover over the head of stud. From the test program, aspect ratio and cover thickness are investigated to mitigate the regulations of the existing design codes. The minimum aspect ratio and the minimum cover thickness given in AASHTO LRFD are four and 50mm, respectively. This limitation hinders to lower the thickness of the UHPC deck. The results of the experiment program give that the aspect ratio and the cover thickness can be lower down to three and 25mm, respectively. Eurocode-4 regulates characteristic relative slip at least 6mm. However, test results show that stud shear connectors embedded in UHPC provide the characteristic relative slip only about 4mm. Therefore, another measures to increase ductility of stud should be prepared.

In this paper, experimental investigations on high strength steel (HSS) stud connected steel-concrete composite (SCC) girders to understand the effect of shear connector density on their flexural behaviour is presented. SCC girder specimens were designed for three different shear capacities (100%, 85%, and 70%), by varying the number of stud connectors in the shear span. Three SCC girder specimens were tested under monotonic/quasi-static loading, while three similar girder specimens were subjected to non-reversal cyclic loading under simply supported end conditions. Details of casting the specimens, experimental set-up, and method of testing, instrumentation for the measurement of deflection, interface-slip and strain are discussed. It is found that SCC girder specimen designed for full shear capacity exhibits interface slip for loads beyond 25% of the ultimate load capacity. Specimens with lesser degree of shear connection show lower values of load at initiation of slip. Very good ductility is exhibited by all the HSS stud connected SCC girder specimens. It is observed that the ultimate moment of resistance as well as ductility gets reduced for HSS stud connected SCC girder with reduction in stud shear connector density. Efficiency factor indicating the effectiveness of high strength stud connectors in resisting interface forces is estimated to be 0.8 from the analysis. Failure mode is primarily flexure with fracturing of stud connectors and characterised by flexural cracking and crushing of concrete at top in the pure bending region. Local buckling in the top flange of steel beam was also observed at the loads near to failure, which is influenced by spacing of studs and top flange thickness of rolled steel section. One of the recommendations is that the ultimate load capacity can be limited to 1.5 times the plastic moment capacity of the section such that the post peak load reduction is kept within limits. Load-deflection behaviour for monotonic tests compared well with the envelope of load-deflection curves for cyclic tests. It is concluded from the experimental investigations that use of HSS studs will reduce their numbers for given loading, which is advantageous in case of long spans. Buckling of top flange of rolled section is observed at failure stage. Provision of lips in the top flange is suggested to avoid this buckling. This is possible in case of longer spans, where normally built-up sections are used.

Shear connector is the element which resist in the horizontal shear force between steel and concrete of composite members and the stud bolt is often used because of its constructional convenience and serviceability. Although the push-out test is the most common method to evaluate shear slip behaviour, it is suitable for only room temperature conditions. In this study, we investigated about shear force, temperature distribution and slip displacement of shear connector in high temperature through the modified push-out test with electronic furnace invented for steel part heating.
In regions of high shear forces in composite bridges, headed stud shear connectors need to be arranged with a small spacing in order to satisfy the design requirement of resisting the high interface shear force present at this location. Despite this, studies related to groups of headed studs are somewhat rare. This paper presents an investigation of the static behaviour of grouped stud shear connectors in high-strength concrete. Descriptions are given of five push-out test specimens with different arrangements of the studs that were fabricated and tested, and the failure modes, load-slip response, ultimate load capacities and related slip values that were obtained are reported. It is found that the load-slip equation given by some researchers based on a single stud shear connector in normal strength concrete do not apply to grouped stud shear connectors in high-strength concrete, and an algebraic load-slip expression is proposed based on the test results. Comparisons between the test results and the formulae provided by some national codes show that the equations for the ultimate capacity provided in these codes are conservative when used for connectors in high-strength concrete. A reduction coefficient is proposed to take into account the effect of the studs being in a group.
For steel-concrete girders made composite using shear studs, initial damage on studs induced by weld defect, unexpected overloading, fatigue and others might degrade the service performance and even threaten the structural safety. This paper conducted a numerical study to investigate the static behavior of damaged stud shear connectors that were embedded in ultra high performance concrete (UHPC). Parameters included damage degree and damage location. The material nonlinear behavior was characterized by multi-linear stress-strain relationship and damage plasticity model. The results indicated that the shear strength was not sensitive to the damage degree when the damage occurred at 2/3d (d is the stud diameter) from the stud root. An increased stud area would be engaged in resisting shear force as the distance of damage location from stud root increased and the failure section becomes inclined, resulting in a less reduction in the shear strength and shear stiffness. The reduction factor was proposed to consider the degradation of the shear strength of the damaged stud. The reduction factor can be calculated using two approaches: a linear relationship and a square relationship with the damage degree corresponding to the shear strength dominated by the section area and the nominal diameter of the damaged stud. It was found that the proposed method is preferred to predict the shear strength of a stud with initial damage.
In order to investigate the behaviour of lying multi-stud connectors in cable-pylon anchorage zone, twenty-four push-out tests are carried out with different stud numbers and diameters. The effect of concrete block width and tensile force on shear strength is investigated using the developed and verified finite element model. The results show that the shear strength of the lying multi-stud connectors is reduced in comparison with the lying single-stud connector. The reduction increases with the increasing of the number of studs in the vertical direction. The influence of the stud number on the strength reduction of the lying multi-stud connectors is decreased under combined shear and tension loads compared with under pure shear. Yet, due to multi-stud effect, they still can't be ignored. The concrete block width has a non-negligible effect on the shear strength of the lying multi-stud connectors and therefore should be chosen properly when designing push-out specimens. No obvious difference is observed between the strength reductions of the studs with 22 mm and 25 mm diameters. The shear strengths obtained from the tests are compared with those predicted by AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode 4. Eurocode 4 generally gives conservative predictions of the shear strength, while AASHTO LRFD overestimates the shear strength. In addition, the lying multi-stud connectors with the diameters of 22 m and 25 mm both exhibit adequate ductility according to Eurocode 4. An expression of load-slip curve is proposed for the lying multi-stud connectors and shows good agreement with the test results.
