  • The cylinder cover stud for assembling the combustion chamber components of low-speed marine diesel engine is one of the main structural components in engine. To understand the structural behavior of the stud is quite important for safe and economic design of it. In this paper, the structural behavior and design adequacy of the stud have been evaluated through strain measurement and structural analysis for the world's two largest engine types. Moreover, a feasibility study for design modification was carried out based on fatigue test and calculation. The results showed that 1) the stud experiences very high stress ratio under normal operating conditions, 2) the fatigue strength of the stud is sufficient, and 3) results from strain measurement and structural analysis were quite close each other.

  • The stud shear connector is the main force transfer member in the steel-concrete composite member, and the mechanical behavior is very complicated in the concrete. The concrete around the stud is subjected to the pry-out local pressure concentration of the stud, which can easily produce splitting mirco-cracks. In order to solve the problem of pry-out local splitting of stud shear connector, a kind of stud shear connector with constraint measure is proposed in this paper. Through the push-out test, the interface shear behavior of the new stud shear connector between steel and concrete flange plate was studied, and the difference between the new stud shear connector and the traditional stud connector was compared. The results show that the stud shear connector with constraint measure can effectively avoid the adverse effect of local pressure splitting by relying on its own constraint measure. The shear stiffness of the interface between steel and concrete flange plates is greatly improved, which provides a theoretical basis for the design of strong connection coefficient of steel-concrete composite structures.

  • The stud is one of the most frequently used shear connectors which are important to the steel-concrete composite action. The static and fatigue behavior of stud in the steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) were particularly concerned in this study through the push-out tests and analysis. It was for the purpose of investigating and explaining a tendency proposed by the current existing researches that the SFRC may ameliorate the shear connector's mechanical performance, and thus contributing to the corresponding design practice. There were 20 test specimens in the tests and 8 models in the analysis. According to the test and analysis results, the SFRC had an obvious effect of restraining the concrete damage and improving the stud static performance when the compressive strength of the host concrete was relatively low. As to the fatigue aspect, the steel fibers in concrete also tended to improve the stud fatigue life, and the favorable tensile performance of SFRC may be the main reason. But such effect was found to vary with the fatigue load range. Moreover, the static and fatigue test results were compared with several design codes. Particularly, the fatigue life estimation of Eurocode 4 appeared to be less conservative than that of AASHTO, and to have higher safety redundancy than that of JSCE hybrid structure guideline.

  • The use of shear studs usually placed in the form of mechanical shear connectors makes it possible to adopt composite steel-concrete structures in various structures, and steel-concrete plate composite (SCP) is being seriously considered for the installation of storage tanks exposed to harsh environments. However, manufacturing of SCP must be based on the application of existing design guidelines which require very close arrangement of shear studs. This means that the direct application of current design guidelines usually produces very conservative results and close arrangement of shear studs precludes pouring concrete within exterior steel faceplates. In this light, an improved guideline to determine the stud spacing should be introduced, and this paper proposes an improved ratio of the stud spacing to the thickness of steel plate on the basis of numerous parametric studies to evaluate the relative influence of the stud spacing on the stability of the SCP.

  • Dry wall using steel stud has the advantage of possibility to install various building, so it used to many buildings inside and outside of the country very rapidly. Though Light gauge steel framed housing offers many advantages to the consumer and the builder, the use of steel studs in wall system cause thermal problems such as thermal performance and pattern staing on walls. The present study has been conducted to observe effect of stud by the shape, and two kind of stud is made for this test to compare thermal performance. The test was conducted by setting those stud on the chamber and heating them. As the results of test and photograping by using TVS, there was temperature gap of each stud, and surface temperature of each section was appeared differently due to shape of stud delaying thermal bridge.

  • In composite structures, shear connectors are crucial components to resist the relative slip between the steel and concrete, and thereby to achieve the composite actions. In the service stage, composite structures are usually in elastic state, so the elastic stiffness of the shear connection is a quite important parameter in the structural analysis of composite structures. Nevertheless, the existing studies mainly focus on the load-slip relationship rather than the tangent stiffness at the initial elastic stage. Furthermore, when composite beams subjected to torque or local load, shear connections are affected by both tensile force and shear force. However, the stiffness of shear connections under combined effects appears not to have been discussed hitherto. This paper investigates the initial elastic stiffness of stud connections under combined effects of biaxial forces. The initial expression and the relevant parameters are obtained by establishing a simplified analytical model of the stud connection. Afterwards, parametric finite element analysis is performed to investigate the effects of the relevant factors, including the stud length, stud diameter, elastic modulus of concrete, elastic modulus of steel and volume ratio of reinforcement. The feasibility of the proposed modelling has been proved by comparing with sufficient experimental tests. Based on the analytical analysis and the extensive numerical simulations, design equations for predicting the initial elastic stiffness of stud connections are proposed. The comparison between the equations and the data of finite element models demonstrates that the equations are accurate enough to serve for engineering communities.

  • A comparative research on the traditional standard wood walls and other light-frame wood walls is necessary to expand the base of wooden buildings and improve consumer satisfaction. Therefore, in this research we looked for new possibilities through comparison of performance between standard wood wall and newly presented staggered stud wood wall. First, the strength characteristics of staggered stud wood walls were evaluated and the those of standard wood walls were compared. The ultimate load of the standard wall was larger than that of the staggered stud wood wall, because the cross section of the wood making up the standard wood wall was larger than that of the staggered stud wood wall. However, the statistical analysis between the two groups didn't showed a significance of 95% confidence level. This means that, staggered stud wood walls have shown the possibility of replacing the standard wood wall. Because the cross-section of the stud in the staggered stud wood walls is smaller than that of the standard wall, the material can be saved. Therefore, staggerd wood stud wall is judged to be more economical than the standard wall. In addition, since the area of the insulation also increases, improvement of the heat bridge is also expected.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate tensile load transmission capacity of H-shaped beam about design load by stud connector. The basic test of stud connecter was conducted and two specimens of full-scale size were tested under monotonic tensile loading condition. The parameter of tests is the size of the H-shaped beams. The results show that tensile load transmission capacity of H-shape beam about design load by stud connectors is excellent observing to the design code of steel structures of Architectural Institute of Korea.
