The microstructure and magnetic properties of$ Fe_{87}Zr_7Si_4B_2$ nanocrystalline alloys were studied by magnetization measurements and M ssbauer spectrometry over a wide temperature range. Three well resolved spectral components have been found and attributed to bcc-Fe grains (with almost pure iron structure), residual amorphous matrix enriched with solute elements and interfaces formed at the grain-matrix boundaries. It has been shown that, contrary to the expectation, during crystallization the atomic segregation occurs leading to the formation of primary bcc-Fe grains and the partition of Si atoms into the residual amorphous matrix.
A numerical procedure is described for simultaneously predicting the motion and structural responses of tension leg platforms (TLPs) in multi-directional irregular waves. The developed numerical approach is based on a combination of a three dimensional source distribution method, the finite element method for structurally treating the space frame elements and a spectral analysis technique of directional waves. The spectral description for the linear responses of a structure in the frequency domain is sufficient to completely define the responses. This is because both the wave inputs and the responses are stationary Gaussian ran dom process of which the statistical properties in the amplitude domain are well known. The hydrodynamic interactions among TLP members, such as columns and pontoons, are included in the motion and structural analysis. The effect of wave directionality has been pointed out on the first order motion, tether forces and structural responses of a TLP in multi-directional irregular waves.
The study of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence gives useful insights on many astrophysical problems. We describe a pseudo-spectral MHD code suitable for the study of incompressible turbulence. We review our recent' works on direct three-dimensional numerical simulations for MHD turbulence in a periodic box. In those works, we use a pseudo-spectral code to solve the incompressible MHD equations. We first discuss the structure and properties of turbulence as functions of scale. The results are consistent with the scaling law recently proposed by Goldreich & Sridhar. The scaling law is based on the concept of scale-dependent isotropy: smaller eddies are more elongated than larger ones along magnetic field lines. This scaling law substantially changes our views on MHD turbulence. For example, as noted by Lazarian & Vishniac, the scaling law can provide a fast reconnection rate. We further discuss how the study of incompressible MHD turbulence can help us to understand physical processes in interstellar medium (ISM) by considering imbalanced cascade and viscous damped turbulence.
Ten new derivatives of 1,3-diazabicyclo[3.1.0]hex-3-enes linked via ether linkage to chalcones were synthesized and characterized by UV, FT-IR, $^1H$ NMR and $^{13}C$ NMR spectral techniques. The spectra of all synthesized compounds, confirmed structure-photochromic behavior relationships (SPBR) both in solution or in solid state by irradiation under UV light at 254 nm. In other efforts for first time photochromic behavior of ketoaziridines has been investigated.
The basic structure of porphyrin consists of four pyrrole units linked by four methine bridges. It reveals that the cyclic 16-atom is the preferred cyclic system for n-electron delocalization since this pathway exhibits the highest degree of bond equalization. Scheme 1 (a) shows the 16-center system is the chromogen of the porphyrins, which allows 18-electron delocalization that could produce aromatic characteristics (1,2). (omitted)
It has been a critical issue to reduce the size of spectrometers in many fields such as on-chip chemical and biological sensing. The proposed plasmonic channel-waveguide with a sub-micrometer width has a cutoff frequency which enables us to control wavelength dependent propagation properties. We focused on the capability of the waveguide for spectral-to-spatial mapping when the waveguide width changes gradually. In this paper, we propose a plasmonic tapered channel-waveguide structure as a compact spectrometer with a physical size of $0.24{\times}2.0{\times}0.20{\mu}m^3$. The scattering point just above the tapered waveguide moves linearly depending on the wavelength of the injecting light. The spectral-to-spatial mapping can be improved by increasing the tapered length.
Use of acetonitrile in electrolytes promotes better operation of supercapacitors. Recent efforts show that electrolytes containing acetonitrile can also function in a wide range of operating temperatures. Therefore, this paper addresses the dielectric relaxation processes, structure and dynamic properties of the bulk acetonitrile at various temperatures. Systems of acetonitrile were modeled using canonical ensemble and simulated by employing Molecular Dynamics method. Results show that interactions among the molecules were correlated within a cut-off radius while parallel and anti-parallel arrangements are observed beyond this radius at relatively high and low temperatures respectively. Furthermore, effects of C-C-N and C-H bending modes were greatly appreciated on the power spectral density of time rate change of dipole-dipole correlations whereas frequency shifts were observed on all modes at the lowest temperature under consideration. Linear variations with temperature were depicted for reorientation times and self-diffusion coefficients. Shear viscosity was also computed with a good accuracy within a certain range of the temperature as well.
Indium tin oxide (ITO) layers are of considerable interest on account of the combination of properties they provide high electrical conductivity, high infrared reflection with high solar energy transmission, high transmission in the visible range. We are concerned about the variation of the spectral transmittances and sheet resistances as the thickness of SiO2-ZrO2 barrier layer and ITO layers and heat treating conditions are changed. Transmittances and reflectivities were studied by measuring UV-VIS-NIR-, FT-IR spectroscopy. ITO films are crack free, homogeneous and of polycrystalline cubic structure. The microstructure of good ITO films shows a narrow grain size distribution and mean value of 100 nm. The selectivity of absorbing properties is improved by increasing the thickness of ITO films. The increase of sheet resistance of ITO films are due to the increase in the reaction between films and glass substrate.
Offshore platforms in seismically active areas must be designed to survive in the face of intense earthquakes without a global structural collapse. This paper scrutinizes the seismic performance of a newly designed and established jacket type offshore platform situated in the entrance of the Gulf of Suez region based on the API-RP2A normalized response spectra during seismic events. A nonlinear finite element model of a typical jacket type offshore platform is constructed taking into consideration the effect of structure-soil-interaction. Soil properties at the site were manipulated to generate the pile lateral soil properties in the form of load deflection curves, based on API-RP2A recommendations. Dynamic characteristics of the offshore platform, the response function, output power spectral density and transfer functions for different elements of the platform are discussed. The joints deflection and acceleration responses demands are presented. It is generally concluded that consideration of the interaction between structure, piles and soil leads to higher deflections and less stresses in platform elements due to soil elasticity, nonlinearity, and damping and leads to a more realistic platform design. The earthquake-based analysis for offshore platform structure is essential for the safe design and operation of offshore platforms.
The aim of the study is to show the results of complex shaking table experimental investigation focused on the response of two models of cylindrical steel tanks under mining tremors and moderate earthquakes, including the aspects of diagnosis of structural damage. Firstly, the impact and the sweep-sine tests have been carried out, so as to determine the dynamic properties of models filled with different levels of liquid. Then, the models have been subjected to seismic and paraseismic excitations. Finally, one fully filled structure has been tested after introducing two different types of damages, so as to verify the method of damage diagnosis. The results of the impact and the sweep-sine tests show that filling the models with liquid leads to substantial reduction in natural frequencies, due to gradually increasing overall mass. Moreover, the results of sweep-sine tests clearly indicate that the increase in the liquid level results in significant increase in the damping structural ratio, which is the effect of damping properties of liquid due to its sloshing. The results of seismic and paraseismic tests indicate that filling the tank with liquid leads initially to considerable reduction in values of acceleration (damping effect of liquid sloshing); however, beyond a certain level of water filling, this regularity is inverted and acceleration values increase (effect of increasing total mass of the structure). Moreover, comparison of the responses under mining tremors and moderate earthquakes indicate that the power amplification factor of the mining tremors may be larger than the seismic power amplification factor. Finally, the results of damage diagnosis of fully filled steel tank model indicate that the forms of the Fourier spectra, together with the frequency and power spectral density values, can be directly related to the specific type of structural damage. They show a decrease in the natural frequencies for the model with unscrewed support bolts (global type of damage), while cutting the welds (local type of damage) has resulted in significant increase in values of the power spectral density for higher vibration modes.
