  • Dynamic stability of a flying structure undertaking constnat and pulsating thrust force is investigated in this paper. The equations of motion of the structure, which is idealized as a free-free beam, are derived by using the hybrid variable method and the assumed mode method. The structural system includes a directional control unit to obtain the directional stability. Unstable regions due to periodically pulsating thrust forces are obtained by using the Floquet's theory. Stability diagrams are presented to illustrate the influence of the constant force, the location of gimbal, and the frequency of pulsating force. The validity of the diagrams are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the dynamic system.

  • This study is conducted to provide the proper analysis method to evaluate the stability of a container crane under wind load. Two analysis method, namely structure analysis and fluid-structure interaction, are adopted to evaluate the stability of a container crane in this investigation. To evaluate the effect of wind load on the stability of the crane, 50-ton class container crane widely used in container terminals is adopted for analysis model and 19-values are considered for wind direction as design parameter. We conduct structure analysis and fluid-structure interaction for a container crane with respect to the wind direction using ANSYS and CFX. Then we compare the uplift forces yielded from two analysis with it yielded from wind tunnel test. The results are as follows: 1) A correlation coefficient between structure analysis and wind tunnel test is lower than 0.65(as $0.29{\sim}0.57$), but between fluid-structure interaction and wind tunnel test is higher than 0.65(as $0.78{\sim}0.86$). 2) There is low correlation between structure analysis and wind tunnel test but very high correlation between fluid-structure interaction and wind tunnel test.

  • Angiogenin is a member of the ribonuclease superfamily that induces the formation of new blood vessels. It has been suggested that the surface loop of angiogenin defined by residues 59-71 plays a special role in angiogenic function (1); however, the mechanism of action is not clearly defined. To elucidate the role of the surface loop on the structure, function and stability of angiogenin, three surface loop mutants were produced in which 14 amino acids in the surface loop of RNase A were substituted for the 13 amino acids in the corresponding loop of angiogenin. The structure, stability and biological functions of the mutants were then investigated using biophysical and biological approaches. Even though the substitutions did not influence the overall structure of angiogenin, they affected the stability and angiogenic function of angiogenin, indicating that the surface loop of angiogenin plays a significant role in maintaining the stability and angiogenic function of angiogenin.

  • Knowledge about how to stabilize soil structure is essential to conserve soil systems and maintain various biogeochemical processes through soil. In urban area, soil structural systems are degraded with inappropriate management and land use and become vulnerable to erosion. We analyzed the structural changes of surface soils with different land uses, i.e., forests, parks, roadside green area, riparian area, and farmlands (soybean fields), in the Anyang Stream Watershed in order to find the factors influencing the stability of soil structure and the implication for better management of surface soil. Soil organic matter contents of other land use soils were only 18~52% of that in forest soils. Soil organic matter increased the stability of soil aggregates in the order of soybean fields < roadsides < riparian < parks < forests and also reduced soil bulk density (increased porosity). The lowest stability of soybean field soils was attributed to the often disturbance like tillage and it was considered that higher stability of park soils comparing to other land use soils except forests was owing to the covering of soil surface with grass. These results suggest that supply of soil organic matter and protection of soil surface with covering materials are very important to increase porosity and stability of soil structure.

  • Background: In contrast to the increased interest in constitutional medicine evidenced by clinical experiences, there has been no theoretical or mathematical analysis on the stability or number of constitutional types. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the stability of possible constitutional types and to find stable constitutional types based on imbalanced structure of five energy elements using mathematical analysis. Methods: For the 120 constitutional types which are possible by the imbalanced combination of five energy elements, vitality, stability and continuity were evaluated mathematically based on mutual activation and suppression between the five energy elements. Results: 10 constitutional types were derived. They had the highest vitality and stability, and they had permanent continuity, never changing their order of imbalanced structure. Conclusions: 10 constitutional types are logical and most reasonable when we classify the body types based on imbalanced structure of five energy elements.

  • This paper deals with the problem of estimating the asymptotic stability region(ASR) of uncertain variable structure systems with bounded controllers. Using linear matrix inequalities(LMIs) we estimate the ASR and show the exponential stability of the closed-loop control system in the estimated ASR. We give a simple LMI-based algorithm to get estimates of the ASR. We also give a synthesis algorithm to design a switching surface which will make the estimated ASR big. Finally, we give numerical examples in order to show that our method can give better results than the previous ones for a certain class of uncertain variable structure systems with bounded controllers.

  • In this study, a series of items on the safety and stability of cracked main structure in subway are investigated and analyzed. Cracks due to dry contraction under the construction can be found when a tensile stress of cross section is higher than tensile strength at a value of coefficient of dry contraction $200{\times}10^{-6}$. It is concluded that there is no problems when load carrying capacity, that is, an ability of resisting loads of structure is enough in this analytical model. Also, it is concluded that this model has a desirable serviceability because a width of bending crack is lower than allowable one.

  • Dynamic stability of an axially accelerating beam structure is investigated in this paper. The equations of motion of a fixed-free beam are derived using the hybrid deformation variable method and the assumed mode method. Unstable regions due to periodical acceleration are obtained by using the Floquet's theory. Stability diagrams are presented to illustrate the influence of the dimensionless acceleration, amplitude, and frequency. Also, buckling occurs when the acceleration exceeds a certain value. It is found that relatively large unstable regions exist around the first bending natural frequency, twice the first bending natural frequency, and twice the second bending natural frequency. The validity of the stability diagram is confirmed by direct numerical integration of the equations of motion.

  • Aerostatic instability of a suspension bridge may suddenly appears when the deformed shape of the structure produces an increase in the value of the three components of displacement-dependent wind loads distributed in the structure. This paper investigates the aerostatic stability of suspension bridges using an advanced nonlinear method based on the concept of limit point instability. Particular attention is devoted to aerostatic stability analysis of symmetrical suspension bridges. A long-span symmetrical suspension bridge (Hu Men Bridge) with a main span of 888 m is chosen for analysis. It is found that the initial configuration (symmetry or asymmetry) may affect the instability configuration of structure. A finite element software for the nonlinear aerostatic stability analysis of cable-supported bridges (NASAB) is presented and discussed. The aerostatic failure mechanism of suspension bridges is also explained by tracing aerostatic instability path.

  • Robust stability conditions for discrete-time variable structure control is proposed. Conventionally the discrete-time variable structure control method with a variable structure uncertainty compensator approach requires a bounded changing rate of the uncertainties to ensure robust stability. However, when uncertainties vary as a function of state variables, which occur with parametric uncertainties, it is not reasonable to assume a bounded variation on the uncertainties. In this paper, uncertainties are assumed to consist of exogenous disturbances and parametric uncertainties. An uncertainty compensator is used to deal with the former, and a robust stability condition is derived using Small Gain Theorem for the latter.
