  • In this work, we present the results of our empirical study on 802.11 wireless LAN network traffic. We collect the packet trace from existing campus wireless LAN infra-structure. We analyzed four different data sets: aggregate traffic, upstream traffic, downstream traffic, tcp only packet trace from aggregate traffic. We analyze the time series aspect of underlying traffic (byte count process and packet count process), marginal distribution of time series, and packet size distribution. We found that in all four data sets there exist long-range dependent property in byte count and packet count process. Inter-arrival distribution is well fitted with Pareto distribution. Upstream traffic, i.e. from the user to Internet, exhibits significant difference in its packet size distribution from the rests. Average packet size of upstream traffic is 151.7 byte while average packet size of the rest of the data sets are all greater than 260 bytes. Packets with full data payloads constitutes 3% and 10% in upstream traffic and the downstream traffic, respectively. Despite the significant difference in packet size distribution, all four data sets have similar Hurst values. The Hurst alone does not properly explain the stochastic characteristics of the underlying traffic. We model the underlying traffic using fractional-ARIMA (FARIMA) and fractional Gaussian Noise (FGN). While the fractional Gaussian Noise based method is computationally more efficient, FARIMA exhibits superior performance in accurately modeling the underlying traffic.

  • Seabed multiple reflections (seabed multiples) are the main cause of misinterpretations of primary reflections in both shot gathers and stack sections. Accordingly, seabed multiples need to be suppressed throughout data processing. Conventional model-driven methods, such as prediction-error deconvolution, Radon filtering, and data-driven methods, such as the surface-related multiple elimination technique, have been used to attenuate multiple reflections. However, the vast majority of processing workflows require time-consuming steps when testing and selecting the processing parameters in addition to computational power and skilled data-processing techniques. To attenuate seabed multiples in seismic reflection data, input gathers with seabed multiples and label gathers without seabed multiples were generated via numerical modeling using the Marmousi2 velocity structure. The training data consisted of normal-moveout-corrected common midpoint gathers fed into a U-Net neural network. The well-trained model was found to effectively attenuate the seabed multiples according to the image similarity between the prediction result and the target data, and demonstrated good applicability to field data.

  • Text visualization is one of sectors in data visualization. This study is on methods to visually represent text's contents, structure, and form aspects based on various analytic techniques about wide range of text data. In this study -as a text visualization study-, 1) a method to find out the characteristics of a book's genre using words in the text of the book was looked into, 2) elements of visualization of a book's genre based on verification through an experiment were drew, and 3) the ways to intuitionally and efficiently visualize this were explained. According to visualization suggested by this study, first, actual genre of a book can be understood based on words used in the book. Second, with which genre is closed to the book can be found out with one glance through images of visualization. Moreover, the characteristics of complicated genres included in a book can be understood. Furthermore, the level of closeness (similarity) of a genre -which is found to be a representative genre using the number of dots, curvature of a curve, and brightness in the image- can be assumed. Finally, the outcome of this study can be used for a variety of fields including book customizing service such as a book recommendation system that provides images of personal preference books or genres through application of books favored by individual customers.

  • We have studied the eukaryotic plankton species diversity to compare the community structure of fresh and brackish waters in the lower reaches of the Nakdong River using metagenomic methods. We constructed 18S rDNA clone libraries of total DNAs extracted from environmental water samples collected at Mulgeum (MG100929, fresh) and Eulsukdo bridge (ES, brackish). Through the steps of colony PCR, PCR-RFLP, sequencing and similarity analysis, we discovered the diverse species composition of eukaryotic plankton. Total 338 clones (170 at MG100929 and 168 at ES) were analyzed, and then we found 74 phylotypes (49 for MG100929 and 25 for ES). From the phylogenetic analysis, we confirmed various eukaryotic plankton of broad range of taxonomic groups, including Stramenopiles, Cryptophyta, Viridiplantae, Alveolata, Rhizaria, Metazoa, and Fungi. We also found several unreported species in Korea and candidates of new taxonomic entities at levels higher than genus. Especially, the cryptic species diversity including unreported phylotypes of Pirsonia (Stramenopiles) and Perkinsea (Alveolata) suggests that the molecular monitoring method can produce new informative biological data in monitoring the changes in the Nakdong River Mouth ecosystem.

  • Effects of heat and gamma irradiation on chemical, microbiological, and immunological changes of raw milk were compared. Free fatty acid content of milk showed increasing tendency according to the increase of heating temperature and irradiation dose, and showed similarity in UHT (ultra high temperature) and 5 kGy irradiation. Total bacterial counts and coliforms were not detected after treatment of LTLT (low temperature long time), HTST (high temperature short time), UHT, and irradiation from 1 to 10 kGy in the milk with initial microbial load at $10^3$ CFU/mL initially, but after 7 day storage, were not detected in UHT milk and that irradiated at 3 kGy or above. Heat treatment decreased (p<0.05) arginine, asparate, iso-leucine, lysine, and methionine content compared to raw milk while irradiation decreased (p<0.05) asparate, histidine, iso-luecine, leucine, and lysine content, which means irradiation could change primary structure of milk proteins. It was concluded that f kGy gamma irradiation treatment of raw milk could give a similar effect to UHT treatment in chemical and microbiological viewpoint, and may reduce allergenicity of raw milk.

  • The heterogeneity of forest environment plays an important role in the structure and dynamics of tree population, the composition of forest community, and the maintenance of species diversity. Based upon the research data of the nine hectare permanent plot in the typical mixed broadleaved-Korean pine forest, this study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of spatial pattern of Acer tegmentosum population for seedlings, saplings, and living and dead trees so as to evaluate the effect of micro-topography on spatial pattern of the species. The results noted that A. tegmentosum preferred to gentle slopes. There was no difference in density of seedlings by the variation of aspect, but the density of saplings, and living and dead trees was high on the western and southeastern slopes. Living trees of A. tegmentosum showed the clumped pattern for all scales within 150 m and highest at the scale of 30 m. Dead stems of the species indicated the clumped pattern within 111 m, highest at the scale of 72 m, and random pattern beyond the scale of 111 m (P < 0.01 ). The similarity of occurrence by developmental stages of A. tegmentosum showed that seedlings vs. saplings, saplings vs. living trees, and living trees vs. dead stems had highly positive correlation to each other, respectively (P < 0.01 ), indicating that the occurrence of previous developmental stages was positively correlated to following stages.

  • In screening for antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) KCCM 40510 and Bacillus cereus KCTC 3624, NNIBRFG5039 was isolated from the air in Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Based on a high sequence similarity of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, NNIBRFG5039 was determined to be closely related to Penicillium rubefaciens CBS 139145. The optimal media, initial pH, and temperature for mycelial growth and antimicrobial activity of P. rubefaciens NNIBRFG5039 were determined as follows: potato dextrose broth (PDB), pH 6.5, and 30℃, respectively. Under the optimal culture conditions, maximum mycelial growth (12.4 g L-1) and antibacterial activity (7.5 mm zone of inhibition against MRSA KCCM 40510, and 5.0 mm zone of inhibition against B. cereus KCTC 3624) were observed in a 5 L stirred-tank fermenter. We also isolated the antimicrobial compound from an ethyl acetate fraction, and its chemical structure was identified as (S)-6-hydroxymellein (1) by ESI-MS, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR. Consequently, the extract from P. rubefaciens NNIBRFG5039 may be used in functional materials for antimicrobial-related applications.

  • In order to elucidate the change of plant community of natural forests caused by air pollution in the area of Mt. Dosjil of Ulsan city, 25 study subplots, 5 subplots from each 5 plots were set up. These plots lay along gradients of chronic exposure to airborne sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$), fluorides(F) and possibly other pollutants. Total nitrogen, organic matter, available $P_2O_5$, and CEC were generally depressed near industrial sourecs of air pollutants. The author found a total 7 species near sources of air pollutants and 13 species at the utmost plot from air pollutants. Number of individuals, species diversity, evenness, similarity index and biomass were generally depressed near the industrial source of air pollutants. Tolerant plants to air pollution is Cyperus amuricus, Calamagrostis arundinacea, Bidens bipinnata, Cocculus trilobus, Digtaria sanguinalis, Persicaria hydropiper, Pinus thunbergii, Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior, Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Robinia pseudoacacia. It contains 4.41ton/ha of aboveground biomass of Robinia pseudoacacia in damaged forest by air pollution and 39.47ton/ha of it in the non-attacked forest. The annual net production is 0.67ton/ha. yr in damaged forest and $7.73ton/ha{\cdot}yr$ in the non-attacked forest.

  • Three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationships (3D-QSARs) on the fungicidal activity against damping-off (Pythium ultimum) with N-phenylbenzenesulfonamide and N-phenyl-2-thienylsulfonamide analogues (1-34) were studied quantitatively using CoMFA (comparative molecular field analysis) and CoMSIA (comparative molecular similarity indeces analysis) methodologies. On the whole, the statistical qualities of CoMSIA models with field fit alignment (FF1-FF5) were slightly higher than that of atom based fit alignment (AF1-AF5) but, the deviations of statistical quality between two alignments in case of CoMFA models were slightly lower. The statistical results of CoMFA and CoMSIA model showed that the optimized CoMSIA model (FF1: $r_{cv.}^2\;(q^2)=0.674$ & $r_{ncv.}^2=0.964$) for damping-off is better predictability and fitness for fungicidal activities than CoMFA model (AF5: $r_{cv.}^2\;(q^2)=0.616$ & $r_{ncv.}^2=0.930$). The fungicidal activities according to the information of the CoMSIA (FF1) model were dependence upon the electrostatic and hydrophobic field of the N-phenylbenzene sulfonamide analogues. Therefore, from the results of graphical analyses on the contour maps with CoMSIA (FF3) model, it is expected that the characters of R4-substituent on the N-phenyl ring as hydrophobic and hydrogen bond acceptor will be contributed to the fungicidal activity against damping-off.
