  • This paper quantitatively compares the intrinsic features of the daily USD-GBP exchange rates in two different periods, the 1920s and the 2010s, under the same freely floating exchange rate system. Even though the foreign exchange markets in the 1920s seem to be much less organized and developed than in the 2010s, this paper finds that both the long memory volatility property and the structural break appear to be the common intrigue features of the exchange rates in the two periods by using the FIGARCH model. In particular, the long memory volatility properties in the two periods are found to be upward biased and overstated because of the structural breaks in the exchange markets. Thus this paper applies the Adaptive-FIGARCH model to consider the long memory volatility property and the structural breaks jointly. The main finding is that the structural breaks in the exchange markets affect the long memory volatility property significantly in the two periods but the degree of the long memory volatility property in the 1920s is reduced more remarkably than in the 2010s after the structural breaks are accounted for; thus implying that the structural breaks in the foreign exchange markets in the 1920s seem to be more significant.

  • This paper deals with the structural analysis of wind turbine blades considering the bi-modulus property of CFRP, known as a more economic and efficient material for very large blades. The bi-modulus property is an unique characteristic of CFRP that shows higher tensile modulus than compressive modulus. Due to this characteristic, it is needed to apply the bi-modulus property to the computational analysis of CFRP blades to achieve more accurate results. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to apply the bi-modulus property of CFRP in a numerical simulation. To demonstrate the bi-modulus effect in FE analysis, the actual bi-modulus of CFRP was measured and applied to the structural analysis of a wind turbine blade. Moreover, the effects of the proposed method were evaluated by comparing the analysis results with actual full-scale blade static test results. As a result, it was verified that the proposed method could appropriately simulate the bi-modulus during FE analysis. Moreover, the accuracy of blade structural analysis was improved in accordance with the application of the bi-modulus property.

  • The structural design of oil tankers and bulk carriers should be performed based on the Common Structural Rules(CSR) which were recently established by the International Association Classification Societies(IACS). At first, in the structural design viewpoint, the scantling and hullweight based on the CSR should be compared with those of existing rules, and then a minimum weight/cost design should be performed by considering the variation of the number of web and the material property. In this study, the optimum web space and material property will be proposed by performing a minimum weight/cost design of a large oil tanker, and the results will be compared with those of existing ship. The longitudinal members are determined by SeaTrust-Holdan developed by the Korean Register of Shipping(KR), and the transverse members are determined by NASTRAN and PULS.

  • In this study, the fatigue property of U rib-to-crossbeam connections in orthotropic steel bridge (OSB) crossbeams under heavy traffic vehicle load was investigated considering the effects of in-plane shear stress. The applicability of an improved structural stress (ISS) method was validated for the fatigue behavior analysis of nonwelded arc-shaped cutout regions in multiaxial stress states. Various types of fatigue testing specimens were compared for investigating the equivalent structural stress, fatigue crack initiation positions, and failure modes with the unified standards. Furthermore, the implications of OSB crossbeams and specified loading cases are discussed with respect to the improved method. The ISS method is proven to be applicable for analyzing the fatigue property of nonwelded arc-shaped cutout regions in OSB crossbeams. The used method is essential for gaining a reliable prediction of the most likely failure modes under a specific heavy traffic vehicle load. The evaluated results using the used method are proven to be accurate with a slighter standard deviation. We obtained the trend of equivalent structural stress in arc-shaped cutout regions and validated the crack initiation positions and propagation directions by comparing them with the fatigue testing results. The implications of crossbeam spans on fatigue property are less significant than the effects of crossbeams.

  • Recently, hydrogen energy has been widely used because of strict regulations on greenhouse gas emissions. For using the hydrogen energy, it is required to supply hydrogen through a tube trailer. However hydrogen tube trailer can have excessive load problems during transportation due to reasons such as road shape and driving method, which may lead a risk of hydrogen leakage. So it is necessary to secure a high level of safety. The purpose of this study is to evaluate structural safety for the conservative design of hydrogen tube trailer. First, finite element(FE) modeling of the designed hydrogen tube trailer was performed. After that, safety evaluation method was established through static structural simulation based on the standard GC207 conditions. In addition, effectiveness of the designed model was confirmed through the results of the structural safety evaluation. Finally, driving simulation was used to derive acceleration graph according to time, which was considered as a dynamic property for the evaluation of conservative tube trailer safety evaluation. And dynamic structural simulation was conducted as a condition for actual transportation of tube trailer by applying dynamic properties. As a results, conservative safety was evaluated through dynamic structural simulation and the safety of hydrogen tube trailer was confirmed through satisfaction of the safety rate.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the structural safety of cultural altar since its bearing capacity has been questioned due to weathering damages and sectional defections. This evaluation process consists two stages; which the first is field investigation and the second is structural modeling and analysis. Based on field investigation, all of the structural members supporting the altar were carefully examined and all the findings were accounted for the development of the structural modeling using the Midas computer program. Using a 3D scanner, the weight of the Buddha statue was applied to the structural modeling. Then, according to the allowable stress design method of KBC2016, the structural safety was evaluated. Based on this result, replacements of several structural members were recommended to increase the structural safety and value of cultural property.

  • The paper by Kurkjian and Zelen(1963) introducted the Property A which related to a structural property of concordance matrix of the column incidence matrix. On the other hand, Paik(1985) showed the property of the concordance matrix, which has multinested block circulant pattern matrix, and this structural property was termed Property C by Paik(1985). This paper classifies the incomplete block designs according to the pattern of the concordence matrix which has multi-nested block circulant pattern. The purpose of this classification simplified the solution of reduced normal equation and plan of the design.

  • Cylindrical space frame which have a mechanic property, a functional property, a aesthetic prioerty and so on, occupies one part of sin structures and after this, the using parts will be extended. But because this structure is made of network by combination of line elements there are many nodes the structural the structural behavior is very complicated and there can be a overall collapse of structure by buckling phenomenon if the external force reaches a limitation. In design for this structure, we must determinate layer by considering above mentioned property first of all. Therefore this study aimed at the comparison and the investigation of mechanical characteristics of single-layer and double-layer cylindrical space frame on views of behavior and buckling by use of rise ratio.

  • The paper by Paik (1985) introduced a structural property of the designs which was related to the concordance matrix $NN^{t}$ of the design. This special property was termed Property-C. The designs which have Property-C need not calculation of the generalize inverse of C matrix for solution of reduced normal equation. Paik also mentioned that some block designs belong to Property-C. This paper show the Extended Group Divisible designs defined by Hinkelmann (1964) are included in Property-C.
