In this paper, we introduce a new framework for running the finite element (FE) packages inside an online Loop together with MATLAB. Contrary to the Hardware-in-the-Loop techniques (HiL), in the proposed Software-in-the-Loop framework (SiL), the FE package represents a simulation platform replicating the real system which can be out of access due to several strategic reasons, e.g., costs and accessibility. Practically, SiL for sophisticated structural design and multi-physical simulations provides a platform for preliminary tests before prototyping and mass production. This feature may reduce the new product's costs significantly and may add several flexibilities in implementing different instruments with the goal of shortlisting the most cost-effective ones before moving to real-time experiments for the civil and mechanical systems. The proposed SiL interconnection is not limited to ABAQUS as long as the host FE package is capable of executing user-defined commands in FORTRAN language. The focal point of this research is on using the compiled FORTRAN subroutine as a messenger between ABAQUS/CAE kernel and MATLAB Engine. In order to show the generality of the proposed scheme, the limitations of the available SiL schemes in the literature are addressed in this paper. Additionally, all technical details for establishing the connection between FEM and MATLAB are provided for the interested reader. Finally, two numerical sub-problems are defined for offline and online post-processing, i.e., offline optimization and closed-loop system performance analysis in control theory.

Turbine blades and disc, which are one of the most important rotating parts of a gas turbine engine, are required to have highly efficient performance in order to minimize the total life cycle costs. Owing to these requirements, these components are exposed to severe conditions such as extreme turbine inlet temperatures, high compression ratios, and high speeds. To evaluate the structural integrity of a turbine disc under these conditions, material modeling and finite element analysis techniques are essential; furthermore, shape optimization is necessary for determining the optimal solution. This study aims to generate 2D finite element models of an axisymmetry model and a sector one and to perform thermal-structural coupled-field analysis and contact analysis. Structurally vulnerable areas such as the disc bore and disc-blade interface region are analyzed by a parametric study. Finally, an improved design is provided based on the results, and the necessity of elaborate shape optimization is confirmed.

In this study, the problem formulation and solution technique using genetic algorithms for design optimization of laminate composite cylindrical beam section are presented. The hollow cylindrical beams we usually used in the wheel chair. If the weight of wheel chair is reduced, it will lead to huge improvement in passenger's mobility and comfort. In this context, the replacement of steel by high performance and light weight composite material along with optimal design will be a good contribution in the process of weight reduction of a wheel chair. An artificial genetics approach for the design optimization of hollow cylindrical composite beam is presented. On applying the genetic algorithm, the optimal dimensions of hollow cylindrical composite beams which have equivalent rigidities to those of corresponding hollow cylindrical steel beams are obtained. Also structural analysis is conducted on the entire wheel chair structure incorporating Tsai-Wu failure criteria. The maximum Tsai-Wu failure criteria index is $0.192\times10^{-3}$ which is moth less than value of 1.00 indicating no failure is observed under excessive loading condition. It is found that the substitution of steel by composite material could reduce the weight of wheel chair up to 45%.
In the current era of big data and cloud computing, the amount of data utilized is increasing, and various systems to process this big data rapidly are being developed. A distributed file system is often used to store the data, and glusterFS is one of popular distributed file systems. As computer technology has advanced, NAND flash SSDs (Solid State Drives), which are high performance storage devices, have become cheaper. For this reason, datacenter operators attempt to use SSDs in their systems. They also try to install glusterFS on SSDs. However, since the glusterFS is designed to use HDDs (Hard Disk Drives), when SSDs are used instead of HDDs, the performance is degraded due to structural problems. The problems include the use of I/O-cache, Read-ahead, and Write-behind Translators. By removing these features that do not fit SSDs which are advantageous for random I/O, we have achieved performance improvements, by up to 255% in the case of 4KB random reads, and by up to 50% in the case of 64KB random reads.

The construction of Reinforced Concrete (R/C) buildings with unreinforced masonry infills is part of the traditional building practice in many countries with regions of high seismicity throughout the world. When these buildings are subjected to seismic motions the presence of masonry infills and especially their configuration can highly influence the seismic damage state. The capability to avoid configurations of masonry infills prone to seismic damage at the stage of initial architectural concept would be significantly definitive in the context of Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering. Along these lines, the present paper investigates the potential of instant prediction of the damage response of R/C buildings with various configurations of masonry infills utilizing Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). To this end, Multilayer Feedforward Perceptron networks are utilized and the problem is formulated as pattern recognition problem. The ANNs' training data-set is created by means of Nonlinear Time History Analyses of 5 R/C buildings with a large number of different masonry infills' distributions, which are subjected to 65 earthquakes. The structural damage is expressed in terms of the Maximum Interstorey Drift Ratio. The most significant conclusion which is extracted is that the ANNs can reliably estimate the influence of masonry infills' configurations on the seismic damage level of R/C buildings incorporating their optimum design.

The blade root fillets which have strong influences on the performance of propellers in the both structural and hydrodynamic points of view, are mechanical parts for smooth connection surface with a blade and a hub. A few related researches (Sabol, 1983; Kennedy, 1997) have noted that 3T-T/3 double radius section design would be suitable for reducing Stress Concentration Factor(SCF) and increasing Cavitation Inception Speed(CIS). In this paper, it is confirmed that this compound cross-section design has come close to the optimum solution in the shape optimization standpoint so that it could protect the propeller blade under the frequent and various loading cases. On that basis, we suggest the definite and simple fillet design methodology that has the cross-section with nT-T/n compound radius and elliptic shape which could sustain the given derivatives information as well as the offsets at the boundary and all inner region of the fillet surface. In addition, the result of design is presented in form of IGES file format in order to connect with NC machine seamlessly.

The object of this study is to develope a program with proposed numerical techniques for an optimal seismic control of structures using active tendon systems. Ricatti closed-loop algorithm has been applied to control the active tendon systems with time-delay problem. The optimal control is formulated as an optimization problem which is finding optimal weighting matrices by minimizing the quadratic performance index by SUMT. In order to find the optimal location of active tendons in structures, controllability index has been introduced. From numerical examples, the current optimal control technique with optimal location of tendons was suitable to control the seismic response of structures.

Ball valves are used as a key element in the process industries. The industrial development of valves has increased steadily, but continued improvement requires high design reliability and long service life. Currently, the development of high performance valves is not easy because of the lack of relevant technology in Korea. Valves are being imported at a level of up to 58 percent of the domestic market, which represents a value of almost 7 million US dollars. Therefore, in this work, the improvement of the design and performance of industrial valves has been studied in an attempt to achieve valves that will have longer service life and better output during operation. The structural stability was evaluated using the ANSYS FSI (Fluid-Structural Interaction) module. Moreover, to obtain maximum product reliability, torque analysis simulation was performed to compare and experimental results. The simulation results were used to predict the change in torque by changes in shape, thereby reducing the time and cost of manufacturing a number of prototypes for experimental validation.

This study aims to identify the influencing factors of intention to use cloud services using the SEM-ANN two-step approach. In previous studies of SEM-ANN, SEM presented R2 and ANN presented MSE(mean squared error), so analysis performance could not be compared. In this study, R2 and MSE were calculated and presented by SEM and ANN, respectively. Then, analysis performance was compared and feature importances were compared by sensitivity analysis. As a result, the ANN default model improved R2 by 2.87 compared to the PLS model, showing a small Cohen's effect size. The ANN optimization model improved R2 by 7.86 compared to the PLS model, showing a medium Cohen effect size. In normalized feature importances, the order of importances was the same for PLS and ANN. The contribution of this study, which links structural equation modeling to artificial intelligence, is that it verified the effect of improving the explanatory power of the research model while maintaining the order of importance of independent variables.

Most conventional model updating methods must use mathematical objective function with experimental modal matrices and analytical system matrices or must use information about the gradient or higher derivatives of modal properties with respect to each updating parameter. Therefore, most conventional methods are not appropriate for complex structural system such as bridge structures due to stability problem in inverse analysis with ill-conditions. Sometimes, moreover, the updated model may have no physical meaning. In this paper, a new FE model updating method based on a hybrid optimization technique using genetic algorithm (GA) and Holder-Mead simplex method (NMS) is proposed. The performance of hybrid optimization technique on the nonlinear problem is demonstrated by the Goldstein-Price function with three local minima and one global minimum. The influence of the objective function is evaluated by the case study of a simulated 10-dof spring-mass model. Through simulated case studies, finally, the objective function is proposed to update mass as well as stiffness at the same time. And so, the proposed hybrid optimization technique is proved to be an efficient method for FE model updating.
