Ion beam bombardment at low energy forms nanosize patterns such as ripples, dots or wrinkles on the surface of polymers in ambient temperature and pressure. It has been known that the ion beam can alter the polymer surface that induces skins stiffer or the density higher by higher compressive stress or strain energies associated with chain scissions and crosslinks of the polymer. Atomic scale structure evolution in polymers is essential to understand a stress generation mechanism during the ion beam bombardment, which governs the nanoscale surface structure evolution. In this work, Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations are employed to characterize the phenomenon occurred in bombardment between the ion beam and polymers that forms nanosize patterns. We investigate the structure evolution of Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) at 300 K as the polymer is bombarded with Argon ions having various kinetic energies ranging from 100 eV to 1 KeV with 50 eV intervals having the fluence of $1.45\;{\times}\;1014 #/cm2$. These simulations use the Reactive Force Field (ReaxFF), which can mimic chemical covalent bonds and includes van der Waals potentials for describing the intermolecular interactions. The results show the details of the structural evolution of LDPE by the low energy Ar ion bombardment. Analyses through kinetic and potential energy, number of crosslinks and chain scissions, level of local densification and motions of atoms support that the residual strain energies on the surface is strongly associated with the number of crosslinks or scissored chains. Also, we could find an optimal Ar ion beam energy to make crosslinks well.

A procedure for determining the lateral load pattern for pushover analysis which includes higher mode effects is presented in this study. It is well-known that the details of future earthquakes at particular site is almost impossible to predict accurately and that the code-design spectra try to represent at least the average nature of probable future earthquakes. Thus the code-design spectrum is directly used as the input earthquakes in this paper when incorporating higher mode effects in the pushover analysis so that the efforts for selecting input motions and constructing response spectrum needed in some existing method could be avoided. A case study based on the time history analysis of a irregular steel moment frame showed that the procedure proposed in this study generally outperforms various pushover analysis procedures of ATC-40 and FEMA 273. However, the proposed procedure tended to be conservative as compared with the time history analysis method.

This study aimed to investigate the flexural behavior of precast concrete (PC) wall - steel shoe composite assemblies with various dry connection details at mid-span. Flexural tests were performed for five scenarios. Test parameters included the width of test specimens, arrangement of steel shoe connectors, and use of structural adhesive or waterproof tape at the mid-span joint. The test results showed that the PC wall - steel shoe composite assemblies joined at mid-span showed flexural damage patterns combined with rotational deformation, and the structural performance was satisfactory regardless of the arrangement of steel shoe connectors. Considering the two deformation components (flexural deformation by bending and rotational deformation due to joint opening), a theoretical model was proposed to analyze flexural strength and joint opening, and the simple model gave good predictions with acceptable accuracy.

The seismic performance of non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frame retrofitted with H-beam frame and cast expansive mortar into joint between existing RC frame and H-beam frame is investigated experimentally and analytically. RC frames considered in the study contain non-ductile reinforcement details of low-rise school building constructed in Korea before 1988. The tests were conducted on half-scale specimens simulating the lower frame assemblages of a typical school building. Two one-bay, one-story RC frames with and without retrofitting with H-beam frame and expansive joint mortar were tested to failure. Test and analysis results indicated that seismic strengthening using H-beam and expansive joint mortar significantly improved the lateral strength and stiffness of non-ductile RC frame without installing anchor bolts to fit H-beam frame into existing RC frame. The effectiveness of seismic strengthening technology proposed in the study for non-ductile RC frame was verified experimentally and analytically.
Semi-rigid joints have been widely studied in literature in recent decades because they affect greatly the structural response of frames. In literature, the behavior of semi-rigid joints is commonly assumed to be identical under positive and negative moments which are obviously incorrect in many cases where joint details such as bolt arrangement or placement of haunch are vertically asymmetrical. This paper evaluates two common types of steel frames with asymmetrical beam-to-column joints by Direct Analysis allowing for plasticity. A refined design method of steel frames using a proposed simple forth order curved-quartic element with an integrated joint model allowing for asymmetrical geometric joint properties is presented. Furthermore, the ultimate behavior of six types of asymmetrical end-plate connections under positive and negative moment is examined by the Finite Element Method (FEM). The FEM results are further applied to the proposed design method with the curved-quartic element for Direct Analysis of two types of steel frames under dominant gravity or wind load. The ultimate frame behavior under the two different scenarios are examined with respect to their failure modes and considerably different structural performances of the frames were observed when compared with the identical frames designed with the traditional method where symmetrical joints characteristics were assumed. The finding of this research contributes to the design of steel frames as their asymmetrical beam-to-column joints lead to different frame behavior when under positive and negative moment and this aspect should be incorporated in the design and analysis of steel frames. This consideration of asymmetrical joint behavior is recommended to be highlighted in future design codes.

De -icing salts have been used commonly in areas where snow or ice is a seasonal safety hazard for roadway, however, the salts is one of main causes on serious deterioration of road infrastructures in crowded urban city like Seoul. In order to establish maintenance strategy of road infrastructures under de-icing salts laden environment, it is necessary to examine environmental characteristics and its response to the existing facilities. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the deterioration environment of road infrastructures. Additional purpose is to develop a design model and details for durability design of infrastructures under de-icing salts laden environment, considering mainly a build-up rate of surface chlorides. Concentration of external chloride solution and surface chloride content were calculated at the level of average de-icing salts for 5 years, ratio of auxiliary road of 17.5 to 30%, and effective exposure area to snow 50 to 80%. The chloride build-up rate was 0.073 ~ 0.077% / year and the maximum surface chloride content was calculated to be 2.2 ~ 2.31% by concrete wt. This study is expected to be used for establishing integrated strategy of road infrastructures, such as predicting chloride profiles or degree of chemical corrosion to exposure concrete.

In this study, the experimental results of 7 dampers with the same strut height and similar cross-sectional area were compared based on the existing research results on steel dampers with rocking behavior. As steel plate dampers, SI-260, SV-260, SS-260 without Lateral deformation prevention detail(Ldpd), I-1, V-1, S-1 with Ldpd, and R20-260 with steel rod damper were evaluated. In addition, R15-260, which has a cross-sectional area of 0.56 times than other dampers, was also reviewed to appropriately evaluate the behavior of the steel rod damper. An important study result is the application superiority of the steel rod damper, which improved the unidirectional behavior of the steel plate dampers. This was proved in the moment-resistance capacity and displacement ratio evaluation. As a result of the evaluation, the R20-260, a steel bar damper, was evaluated as having the best performance. In addition, it is judged to have sufficient seismic resistance as it shows deformability up to a displacement ratio of 2.0.

The purpose of this study is to prevent diagonal tension failure of existing conventional coupling beams, increase the shear strength of conventional coupling beams, and quantitatively evaluate the increase. Steel fibers can improve shear strength and partially change the failure mechanism, but this is the result of research on general RC beams and columns, and research on the shear strength enhancement of conventional coupling beams for steel fiber reinforced concrete is still lacking. Therefore, in order to confirm the increased shear strength caused by steel fiber and the resulting change in failure mechanism, three specimens were fabricated with the steel fiber volume fraction as a variable (0%, 1%, 2%) and repeated loading experiments were performed. As a result, the shear strength of the specimens reinforced with steel fibers (1%, 2%) increased as the shear resistance contribution of concrete increased after the maximum strength was developed compared to the specimens without it (0%).

This paper details the analytical and experimental studies performed to propose a steel damper based on the flexural yielding mechanism. The damper is composed of a set of damping plates that are designed to yield in flexure. The comparison of experimental and finite element analysis results indicate that the analytical approach adopted in this study should be appropriate to perform sensitivity studies on the geometries of the damping plates. Although the damper is originally proposed to work based on the flexural mechanism, it is observed that the contribution of the tensile behavior of the damping plate could be considerable. As the thickness of the damping plate increases, the plastic energy due to the flexural yield increases. As the thickness of the damping plate decreases, the contribution of the tensile behavior increases, and the shape of the hysteresis loop distorts.

For fast-built and safe precast concrete (PC) construction, the dry mechanical splicing method is a critical technique that enables a self-sustaining system (SSS) during construction with no temporary support and minimizes onsite jobs. However, due to limited experimental evidence, traditional wet splicing methods are still dominantly adopted in the domestic precast industry. For PC beam-column connections, the current design code requires achieving emulative connection performances and corresponding structural integrity to be comparable with typical reinforced concrete (RC) systems with monolithic connections. To this end, this study conducted the standard material tests on mechanical splices to check their satisfactory performance as the Type 2 mechanical splice specified in the ACI 318 code. Two PC beam-column connection specimens with dry mechanical splices and an RC control specimen as the special moment frame were subsequently fabricated and tested under lateral reversed cyclic loadings. Test results showed that the seismic performances of all the PC specimens were fully comparable to the RC specimen in terms of strength, stiffness, energy dissipation, drift capacity, and failure mode, and their hysteresis responses showed a mitigated pinching effect compared to the control RC specimen. The seismic performances of the PC and RC specimens were evaluated quantitatively based on the ACI 374 report, and it appeared that all the test specimens fully satisfied the seismic performance criteria as a code-compliant special moment frame system.
