  • Wave propagation was studied for an unidirectionally reinforced composite materials. The velocities, the particle directions and the amplitudes of reflected and transmitted waves were obtained. This analysis involves an immersion C-scan procedure. Snell's law was modified to get the velocities of waves. This analysis could be applied to the detection of flaws in a transversely isotropic composite motor case.

  • At the preliminary design stage, the orientations of laminae in a laminate are not known. This fact discourages the most of engineers from the beginning. If the quasi-isotropic constants are used, it halps the design engineer greatly to start his work. If conventional mechanics and elasticity theories can be used, the effort for design and analysis is greatly reduced. This paper reports the possibility of using the classical mechanics at the preliminary design stage for the laminated composite primary structure for civil construction. The result is quite promissing.

  • This study has evaluated the analysis results for the under structure of Korean tilting train(TTX). TTX has many equipments which are attached below the composite carbody. Loads due to equipments on the under structure are very complex and various types as operating condition. So applied loads are considered weight of equipments and acceleration. From the analysis, the structural safety of under structure was assessed.

  • Optimization problems may be devided into geometry optimization problems and topology optimization problems. In this paper, a method using tile equivalent material properties prediction techniques of a particulate-reinforced composites is proposed for the topology optimization. This method makes use of penalty factor in order that regions with intermediate value of design variables can be penalized. The computational results being obtained from PLBA algorithm of some values of penalty factor are presented.

  • Almost all buildings/infrastructures made of composite materials are fabricated without proper design. Unlike airplane or automobile parts, prototype test is impossible. One cannot destroy 10 story buildings or 100 meter-long bridges. In order to realize “composites in construction”, the following subjects must be studied in detail, for his design: Concept optimization, Simple method of analysis, Folded plate theory, Size effects in failure, and Critical frequency Unlike the design procedures with conventional materials, his design should include material design, selection of manufacturing method, and quality control methods, in addition to the fabrication method.

  • To address the need for new intelligent sensing, this paper introduces nano sensors made of carbon nanotube (CNT) composites and presents their preliminary experiments. Having smart material properties such as piezoresistivity, chemical and bio selectivity, the nano composite can be used as smart electrodes of the nano sensors. The nano composite sensor can detect structural deterioration, chemical contamination and bio signal by means of its impedance measurement (resistance and capacitance). For a structural application, the change of impedance shows specific patterns depending on the structural deterioration and this characteristic is available for an in-situ multi-functional sensor, which can simultaneously detect multi symptoms of the structure. This study is anticipated to develop a new nano sensor detecting multiple symptoms in structural, chemical and bio applications with simple electric circuits.

  • In this study, structural developments of polypropylene / ionomer / clay ternary composites were investigated depending on the dispersion and localization of clay. The changes in physical properties were observed adding organoclays 1~10wt% to 90% polypropylene and 10% ionomer blends. The organoclays were localized inside of the dispersed phase under the composition of 3wt%, however, over that composition, clay particles formed stiff network structure in the dispersed phase and additional clays were localized at the interface between two phases. According to the developments of microstructure, the interaction of ternary composites changed from polypropylene-ionomer to polypropylene-ionomer and ionomer-clay which affected rheological properties. The storage modulus (G') of the composites was similar to the blends when clays were localized inside of dispersed phase but increased when clays were localized at interface. Also, the fractured morphology of the composites showed phase boundary and growing radius of dispersed phase depending on addition of fillers when clays were found inside. However, when fillers found at the interface between blends, the radius of the dispersed phase decreased and compatibilized morphology were observed. The interfacial interaction of the ternary composite was quantified depending on the structural development of dispersed phase and localization of clay particles by the rheological properties. The interaction of composites at solid state which was measured through peel adhesion strength increased by growth of interfacial interaction of each component. Furthermore, the crystallinity of the composites was decreased when the clay particles were localized at the interface.

  • Demand for energy consumption reduction is increasing according to the development expectations of future mobility. Lightweight structural materials are known as a method to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency. In particular, fiber reinforced polymer composite (FRP) is attracting attention as a material that can replace existing metal alloys due to its excellent mechanical properties and light weight. In this paper, industrial applications and research trends of carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRP, carbon FRP) and self-reinforced composites (SRC) were reviewed based on the reinforcement, polymer matrix, and manufacturing process. In order to overcome the expensive process cost and long manufacturing time of the epoxy resin-based autoclave method, which is mainly used in the aircraft field, mass production of CFRP-applied electric vehicles has been reported using a high-pressure resin transfer molding process including fast-curing epoxy. In addition, thermoplastic resin-based CFRP and interface enhancement methods to solve the recycling issue of carbon fiber composites were reviewed in terms of materials and processes. To form a perfect matrix-reinforcement interface, which is known as the major factor inducing the excellent mechanical properties of FRP, studies on SRC impregnated with the same matrix in polymer fibers have been reported. The physical and mechanical properties of SRC based on various thermoplastic polymers were reviewed in terms of polymer orientation and composite structure. In addition, a copolymer matrix strategy for extending the processing window of highly drawn polypropylene fiber-based SRC was discussed. The application of CFRP and SRC as lightweight structural materials can provide potential options for improving the energy efficiency of future mobility.
