This paper presents an efficient and accurate method for nonlinear analysis of frame structures by idealized structural unit method. The main idea behind the present method is to minimize the cost of the computational effort by reducing the number of unknowns. An explicit form of the tangential elastic stiffness matrix of the element is derived by using updated Lagrangian approach. An ultimate limit state of the element is judged on the basis of the formation of a plastic hinge mechanism. The elasto-plastic stiffness matrix and the post-ultimate stiffness matrix of the element are formulated by plastic node method. A comparison between the present method is very efficient and accurate because the computing time required is very small while giving the accurate solution.
The tube structures act like cantilevered box beams and effectively resist lateral loads. In result, they are adopted as a high-rise buildings system. However, the shear lag in tube system prevents the idealized tube behavior such as a cantilevered box beam. Therefore, the studies on shear lag phenomena are necessarily requested. The presented papers are almost studied on framed tube structures and tube in tube structures. However, the study on the shear lag in the tube structure with core wall is lack. Thus, in this paper, the shear lag of the structure is studied. The shear lag coefficient is defined to investigate shear lag phenomena. However, existing shear lag coefficients are not adequate for understanding them. Therefore, on this study, new shear lag coefficient is suggested. In addition, the shear lag in the tube structure with core wall is analyzed by changing the five structural parameters of stiffness factor in frame, stiffness factor in wall, stiffness ratio, the number of stories and the number of bays.
In the present work, structural joints have been modeled as a pair of translational and rotational springs and frequency equation of the overall system has been developed using sub-structure synthesis. It is shown that using first few natural frequencies of the system, one can obtain a set of over-determined system of equations involving the unknown stiffness parameters. Method of multi-linear regression is then applied to obtain the best estimate of the unknown stiffness parameters. The estimation procedure has been developed first for a two parameter joint model and then for a three parameter model, in which cross coupling terms are also included. Two cases of structural connections have been considered, first with a cantilever beam with support flexibility and then a pair of beams connected through lap joint. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through numerical simulation and by experimentation.

The ingenuity of structural engineers in the field of tall and super-tall buildings has led to some of the most remarkable inventions. During this evolution of structural engineering concepts in the last 100 years, the technical challenges that engineers encountered were extraordinary and the advances were unprecedented. However, as the accomplishments of structural engineers are progressing, the desire for taller and safer structures is also increasing. The diagrid structural system is part of this evolving process as it develops a new paradigm for tall building design combining engineering efficiency and new architectural expression. The first appearances of this type of tall buildings have already been constructed and the interest of both engineering and architectural communities is growing mainly due to the many advantages compared to other structural systems. This paper presents a simple approach on optimizing member sizes for the diagonals of steel diagrid tall buildings. The optimizing method is based on minimizing the volume of the diagonal elements of a diagrid structure. The constraints are coming from the stiffness-based design, limiting the tip deflection of the building to widely accepted regulative limits. In addition, the current paper attempts to open the discussion on the important topic of optimization and robustness for tall buildings and also studies the future of the diagrid structural system.
This paper reports on the evaluation of the initial stiffness of steel joints using component method as well as experimental tests. The so-called component method corresponds precisely to a simplified mechanical model composed of extensional springs and rigid links, whereby the joint is simulated by an appropriate choice of rigid and flexible components. An application to a cantilever beam-to-column steel joint is presented and compared to the experimental results obtained under cyclic loading condition. Comparison between numerical and experimental results allows to conclude that the numerical model is able to simulate, with a good level of accuracy for initial stiffness, the behaviour of beam-to-column joints.
An analyical method is proposed to construct a clamp jointed structure as an equivalent stiffness matrix element in the finite element modal analysis of a complex beam structure. Static structural analysis was first made for the detail finite element model of the clamp joint. Utilizing the results of this analysis, the equivalent stiffness matrix element was buildup by using the flexibility influence coefficient method and Guyan condensation. The proposed method was applied to finite element modal analysis of a clamp jointed cantilever beam. And the finite element analysis results were compared to those experimental modal analysis. Comparison shows doog agreement each other Furthermore the effects of normal contact(or clamping) load on the equivalent stiffness matrix was also examined. The equivalent stiffness matrix showed little change in spite of the remakable increase in the contact load on the clamp joint.
