  • In this study, seismic verification of the bellows used in the plant field was conducted. The pressure used in the analysis was analyzed by applying the design pressure of 15.7bar. For the seismic analysis, the natural frequency of the bellows system was obtained and the stability of the system was evaluated by static seismic analysis comparing the lowest order natural frequency with the dominant frequency of 33 Hz. The material of the bellows system is STS304, and the safety factor is obtained in comparison with the allowable stress. For the seismic analysis, the design response spectrum was prepared and the maximum acceleration was applied to the static seismic analysis and the stability of the entire system was confirmed. Compared to the structural analysis results, the maximum stress of the bellows system increased by about 16.4% and the maximum strain increased by about 3 times when seismic analysis was performed.

  • In the design of reinforced concrete beams, it is a standard practice to use the yield stress of the steel reinforcement for the evaluation of the flexural strength. However, because of strain hardening, the tensile strength of the steel reinforcement is often substantially higher than the yield stress. Thus, it is a common belief that the actual flexural strength should be higher than the theoretical flexural strength evaluated with strain hardening ignored. The possible increase in flexural strength due to strain hardening is a two-edge sword. In some cases, it may be treated as strength reserve contributing to extra safety. In other cases, it could lead to greater shear demand causing brittle shear failure of the beam or unexpected greater capacity of the beam causing violation of the strong column-weak beam design philosophy. Strain hardening may also have certain effect on the flexural ductility. In this paper, the effects of strain hardening on the post-peak flexural behaviour, particularly the flexural strength and ductility, of reinforced normal- and high-strength concrete beams are studied. The results reveal that the effects of strain hardening could be quite significant when the tension steel ratio is relatively small.

  • For the structural integrity evaluation of pressurized water reactor (PWR) steam generator (SG) tubes subjected to transient hydraulic loading, determination of the tube-to-tube gap velocity and static pressure distributions along the tubes is prerequisite. This paper addresses both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and analytical approaches for predicting the tube-to-tube gap velocity and static pressure distributions during blowdown following a feedwater line break (FWLB) accident at a PWR SG. First of all, a comparative study on CFD calculations of the transient velocity and pressure distributions in the SG secondary sides for two different models having 30 or no tubes is performed. The result shows that the velocities of sub-cooled water flowing between any adjacent two tubes of a tubed SG model during blowdown can be roughly estimated by applying the specified SG secondary side porosity to those of the no-tubed SG model. Secondly, simplified analytical approximate solutions for the steady two-dimensional SG secondary flow velocity and pressure distributions under a given discharge flowrate are derived using a line sink model. The simplified analytical solutions are validated by comparing them to the CFD calculations.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of boundary RC frame(composed of one tie-beam and two tie-columns) on seismic performance of unreinforced masonry walls to suggest alternative way for seismic design of unreinforced masonry wall structures. Two test specimens are prepared, one is a typical unreinforced masonry wall and another is alternative unreinforced masonry wall with additional boundary RC frame. The structural experiments were carried out to evaluate the difference of seismic resistance performance between two test specimens with or without the boundary RC frames. From the test results, it was found that the failure mode of unreinforced masonry wall fundamentally changed from 'brittle' to 'ductile' by the installing of boundary RC frames. And, the maximum load and energy dissipation capacity of the test specimen with boundary RC frame was increased about 1.6~1.7 and 2~3 times respectively compared with a typical unreinforced masonry wall specimen.

  • The structural safety of hydraulic winch drum and the gears are estimated by the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and the winch operation experiment. The mesh convergence test is performed and the applied force is the pressure on the drum converted from the rope tension in working condition. The stress of the drum calculated from the strain values of the winch operation experiment shows the agreement with that from the FEA. Most stress values are under the yield strength except for the small hole made for the wire rope fixation. The life of bearings in the drum is calculated using the life prediction formula with the reaction forces from the operation load. One of the two ball bearings shows the short life for impact condition, yet the real prototype winch system shows more life than the numerical value.

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) is planning the construction of the KIJANG Research Reactor (KJRR) for stable supply of 99Mo. The Fission 99Mo Production Process (FMPP) of KJRR produces solid waste such as spent uranium cake and alumina cake, and liquid waste in the form of intermediate level liquid waste (ILLW) and low level liquid waste (LLLW). This study thus established the operating range and optimum operating conditions for the cementation of ILLW from FMPP. It also evaluated whether cement waste form samples produced under optimum operational conditions satisfy the waste acceptance criteria (WAC) of a disposal facility in Korea (Korea radioactive waste agency, KORAD). Considering economic feasibility and safety, optimum operational conditions were achieved at a w/c ratio of 0.55, and the corresponding salt content was 5.71 wt%. The cement waste form samples prepared under optimum operational conditions were found to satisfy KORAD's WAC when tested for structural stability and leachability. The results indicate that the proposed cementation conditions for the disposal of ILLW from FMMP can be effectively applied to KJRR's disposal facility.

  • The safety of a KTC-360 transport cask, a large-capacity pressurized heavy-water reactor transport cask that transports CANDU spent nuclear fuel discharged from the reactor after burning in a pressurized heavy-water reactor, must be demonstrated under the normal transport and accident conditions specified under transport cask regulations. To confirm the thermal integrity of this cask under normal transport and accident conditions, high-temperature and fire tests were performed using a one-third slice model of an actual KTC-360 cask. The results revealed that the surface temperature of the cask was 62℃, indicating that such casks must be transported separately. The highest temperature of the CANDU spent nuclear fuel was predicted to be lower than the melting temperature of Zircaloy-4, which was the sheath material used. Therefore, if normal operating conditions are applied, the thermal integrity of a KTC-360 cask can be maintained under normal transport conditions. The fire test revealed that the maximum temperatures of the structural materials, stainless steel, and carbon steel were 446℃ lower than the permitted maximum temperatures, proving the thermal integrity of the cask under fire accident conditions.

  • As the development of hydrogen vehicles has accelerated in recent years, it is necessary to develop a storage tank for hydrogen fueling stations capable of high-pressure charging, and for this purpose, a new system with a compressor-embedded refueling tank is required. In this study, the parametric study of shape design based on strength performance evaluation was carried out to find the optimal shape design of bellows, the core component of compressor-embedded refueling tank for a newly developed hydrogen refueling station capable of high-pressure charging above 1,000 bar. The design factors for parametric study were contour shape and radius of bellows, and the performance factors were the maximum stress and the gap distance in the contact direction. In the shape design of the compressor bellows for hydrogen refueling station considered in this study, it was found that adjusting the contour radius is an appropriate design method to improve the compression performance and structural safety.

  • After the mainshock, whether the train can be allowed to pass the bridges plays an important role in ensuring the transport of supplies and rescue works for example, in the "12 May" earthquake in China, after evaluation, the bridge was still used for transportation in rescue at a very slow speed, engineers usually evaluate whether the train can pass the bridge safely based on the experience, lacks sufficient calculation basis and does not fully consider the risk caused by aftershocks. To address this issue, this paper comprehensively considers the randomness of track irregularity, the randomness of aftershock intensity and other multiple random sources in train-bridge interaction system (TBIS). The sensitivity of train to various random parameters after earthquake is analyzed from the perspective of probability, the most sensitive random variable in this paper is PGA of aftershocks, both for bridge and trailer car, With the increase of epicentral distance, the sensitivity of PGA will decrease, and correspondingly, for trailer car, the sensitivity of other random variables will increase, research in this paper provides a basis for the subsequent random analysis of post-earthquake driving safety.
