  • Seismic design criteria allow enhancing the structural ductility and controlling the damage distribution. Therefore, detailing rules and design requirements given by current seismic codes might be also beneficial to improve the structural robustness. In this paper a comprehensive parametric study devoted to quantifying the effectiveness of seismic detailing for steel Moment Resisting Frames (MRF) in limiting the progressive collapse under column loss scenarios is presented and discussed. The overall structural performance was analysed through nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. With this regard the following cases were examined: (i) MRF structures designed for wind actions according to Eurocode 1; (ii) MRF structures designed for seismic actions according to Eurocode 8. The investigated parameters were (i) the number of storeys; (ii) the interstorey height; (iii) the span length; (iv) the building plan layout; and (v) the column loss scenario. Results show that structures designed according to capacity design principles are less robust than wind designed ones, provided that the connections have the same capacity threshold in both cases. In addition, the numerical outcomes show that both the number of elements above the removed column and stiffness of beams are the key parameters in arresting progressive collapse.

  • The ingenuity of structural engineers in the field of tall and super-tall buildings has led to some of the most remarkable inventions. During this evolution of structural engineering concepts in the last 100 years, the technical challenges that engineers encountered were extraordinary and the advances were unprecedented. However, as the accomplishments of structural engineers are progressing, the desire for taller and safer structures is also increasing. The diagrid structural system is part of this evolving process as it develops a new paradigm for tall building design combining engineering efficiency and new architectural expression. The first appearances of this type of tall buildings have already been constructed and the interest of both engineering and architectural communities is growing mainly due to the many advantages compared to other structural systems. This paper presents a simple approach on optimizing member sizes for the diagonals of steel diagrid tall buildings. The optimizing method is based on minimizing the volume of the diagonal elements of a diagrid structure. The constraints are coming from the stiffness-based design, limiting the tip deflection of the building to widely accepted regulative limits. In addition, the current paper attempts to open the discussion on the important topic of optimization and robustness for tall buildings and also studies the future of the diagrid structural system.

  • Since the real steel box girder bridges have a large number of design variables and show complex structural behavior, it would be impractical to directly use the algorithm for its optimum design. Thus, in this study, for optimum design of real steel box girder bridge, approximated reanalysis using an higher-order Improved self-adjusted Convex Approximation (ISACA) which was newly proposed on a previous study by the author is applied for the numerical efficiency. To demonstrate the efficiency, robustness, and convergence of the approximated reanalysis technique using the ISACA, a real bridge having two continuous spans is used as an illustrative example. From the results of the numerical investigation, it may be positively stated that the efficiency, robustness, and convergence of the approximated reanalysis using an ISACA is superior compared with the previous approximated reanalysis techniques.

  • The present paper describes an investigation into the application of the genetic algorithm(GA) in the optimization of structural design. Stochastic processes generate an initial population of designs and then apply principles of natural selection/survival of the fittest to improve the designs. The five test functions are used to verify the robustness and reliability of GA, and as a numerical example, minimum weight of a cantilever composite laminated beam with a mix of continuous, integer and discrete design variables is obtained by using GA with exterior penalty function method. The design problem has constraints on strength, displacements, and natural frequencies, and is formulated to a multidimensional nonlinear form. From the results, it is found that the GA search technique is very effective at finding the good optimum solution as well as has higher robustness.

  • The progressive collapse resistance performance of a steel structure constructed using the moment frame with the WUF-B connection and the composite slabs was evaluated. GSA 2003 was adapted for the evaluation. Additionally the structural robustness and the sensitivity against the progressive collapse were analyzed. In the numerical analysis, a reduced model comprised of the beam and spring elements for WUF-B connection was adapted. The composite slab was modeled using the composite-shell element. Instead of the time-consuming dynamic analysis for the effect of the sudden column removal, the equivalent energy-based static analysis was effectively applied. The analysis results showed that the structure was the most vulnerable to in the case of the internal column removal, however it satisfied the chord rotation criterion of GSA 2003 due to the contribution of the composite slab which improved the stiffness of structure. In the robustness evaluation, the structural performance showed more than 2.5 times of the requirement according to GSA 2003, and the structural sensitivity analysis indicated the decrease of 33% of the initial structural performance.

  • This paper develops a two-stage method for structural damage identification by using modal data. First, the Residual Force Vector (RFV) is introduced to detect any potentially damaged elements of structures. Second, data of the frequency domain are used to build up the objective function, and then the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) is utilized to estimate damaged extents. ICA is a heuristic algorithm with simple structure, which is easy to be implemented and it is effective to deal with high-dimension nonlinear optimization problem. The advantages of this present method are: (1) Calculation complexity can be decreased greatly after eliminating many intact elements in the first step. (2) Robustness, ICA ensures the robustness of the proposed method. Various damaged cases and different structures are investigated in numerical simulations. From these results, anyone can point out that the present algorithm is effective and robust for structural damage identification and is also better than many other heuristic algorithms.

  • Several structural calamities in the second half of the 20th century have shown that adequate collapse-resistance cannot be achieved by designing the individual elements of a structure without taking their interconnectivity into consideration. It has long been acknowledged that membrane behaviour of reinforced concrete structures can significantly increase the robustness of a structure and delay a complete collapse. An experimental large-scale test was conducted on a horizontally restrained, continuous reinforced concrete slab exposed to an artificial failure of the central support and subsequent loading until collapse of the specimen. Within this investigation the development of catenary action associated with the formation of large displacements was observed to increase the ultimate load capacity of the specimen significantly. The development of displacements, strains and horizontal forces within this investigation confirmed a load transfer process from an elastic bending mechanism to a tension controlled catenary mechanism. In this contribution a special focus is directed towards strain and crack development at critical sections. The results of this contribution are of particular importance when validating numerical models related to the development of catenary action in concrete slabs.

  • This paper develops and evaluates several strategies for structural vibration control with the objective of attenuating broadband noise inside a rectangular enclosure. The strategies evaluated include model-independent collocated control, model-based feedback control and a new 'modal-estimate' feedback strategy. Collocated control requires no knowledge of model parameters and enjoys the advantage of robustness. However, effective broadband noise attenuation with colocated control requires a large number of sensor-actuator pairs. Model-based con-trollers, on the other hand, can be theoretically effective even with the use of a single actuator. However, they suffer from a lack of robustness and are unsuitable from a practical point of view for broadband structural vibration applications where the dynamic models are of large order and poorly known. A new control strategy is developed based on attenuating a few structural vibration modes that have the best coupling with the enclosure acoustics. Broadband attenuation of these important modes can be achieved using a single actuator, a limited number of accelerometers and limited knowledge of a few modal functions. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed strategy.
