Geomatrically Non-linear Analysis Method by Curvature Based Flexibility Matrix (유연도 매트릭스를 사용한 기하학적 비선형 해석방법)

  • The latest study for formulation of finite element method and computation techniques has progressed widely. The classical method in the formulation of frame elements for geometrically nonlinear analysis derives the geometric stiffness directly from the governing differential equation for bending with axial force. From the computational viewpoint of this paper, the most common approach is the finite element method. Commonly, the formulation of frame elements for geometrically nonlinear structures is based on appropriate interpolation functions for the transverse and axial displacements of the member. The formulation of flexibility-based elements, on the other hand, is based on interpolation functions for the internal forces. In this paper, a new method is used to suppose that interpolation functions for the displacements from the curvatures is Lagrangian interpolation. This paper derives flexibility matrix from that displacement functions and is considered the application of it. Using the flexibility matrix, this paper apply the program considered geometrically nonlinear analysis to common problems.

Large deformation modeling of flexible manipulators to determine allowable load

  • This paper focuses on the study of complete dynamic modeling and maximum dynamic load carrying capacity computation of N-flexible links and N-flexible joints mobile manipulator undergoing large deformation. Nonlinear dynamic analysis relies on the Timoshenko theory of beams. In order to model the system completely and precisely, structural and joint flexibility, nonlinear strain-displacement relationship, payload, and non-holonomic constraints will be considered to. A finite element solution method based on mixed method is applied to model the shear deformation. This procedure is considerably more involved than displacement based element and shear deformation can be readily included without inducing the shear locking in the element. Another goal of this paper is to present a computational procedure for determination of the maximum dynamic load of geometrically nonlinear manipulators with structural and joint flexibility. An effective measure named as Moment-Height Stability (MHS) measure is applied to consider the dynamic stability of a wheeled mobile manipulator. Simulations are performed for mobile base manipulator with two flexible links and joints. The results represent that dynamic stability constraint is sensitive when calculating the maximum carrying load. Furthermore, by changing the trajectory of end effector, allowable load also changes. The effect of torsional spring parameter on the joint deformation is investigated in a parametric sensitivity study. The findings show that, by the increase of torsional stiffness, the behavior of system approaches to a system with rigid joints and allowable load of robot is also enhanced. A comparison is also made between the results obtained from small and large deformation models. Fluctuation range in obtained figures for angular displacement of links and end effector path is bigger for large deformation model. Experimental results are also provided to validate the theoretical model and these have good agreement with the simulated results.

  • The technique of posttensioning has been used successfully to improve the performance of existing concrete structures. However, very few applications of this technique can be found in steel structures. Posttensioning by means of high strength cable or bar can be used to effectively increase the working load capacity of Truss Bridges. The benefits of posttensioning trusses can be achieved in strengthening of existing structures as well as in the design of new structures. In this paper, the elastic behavior of posttensioned trusses with straight and draped tendon profiles is examined. For the analysis of posttensioned trusses in the elastic range of behavior, two methods are presented, namely, the flexibility method and the mixed-method, i.e., a combination of the stiffness and flexibility methods. Using the presented methods, the effects of design variables such as the tendon profile, truss type, prestress force, and tendon eccentricity on the working load and deflection of trusses are studied. The results show that the allowable load of truss increases proportionally with increase in prestress force and eccentricity. Posttesioning enlarges the elastic range, increases redundancy, and reduces deflection and member stresses. Thus, the remaining life of a truss bridge can be increased relatively inexpensively.

Non-linear free vibrations and post-buckling analysis of shear flexible functionally graded beams

  • Large amplitude free vibration and thermal post-buckling of shear flexible Functionally Graded Material (FGM) beams is studied using finite element formulation based on first order Timoshenko beam theory. Classical boundary conditions are considered. The ends are assumed to be axially immovable. The von-Karman type strain-displacement relations are used to account for geometric non-linearity. For all the boundary conditions considered, hardening type of non-linearity is observed. For large amplitude vibration of FGM beams, a comprehensive study has been carried out with various lengths to height ratios, maximum lateral amplitude to radius of gyration ratios, volume fraction exponents and boundary conditions. It is observed that, for FGM beams, the non-linear frequencies are dependent on the sign of the vibration amplitudes. For thermal post-buckling of FGM beams, the effect of shear flexibility on the structural response is discussed in detail for different volume fraction exponents, length to height ratios and boundary conditions. The effect of shear flexibility is observed to be predominant for clamped beam as compared to simply supported beam.

Nondestructive damage evaluation of a curved thin beam

  • A vibration-based nondestructive damage evaluation technique for a curved thin beam is introduced. The proposed method is capable of detecting, locating, and sizing structural damage simultaneously by using a few of the lower natural frequencies and their corresponding mode shapes before and after a small damage event. The proposed approach utilizes modal flexibilities reconstructed from measured modal parameters. A rigorous system of equations governing damage and curvature of modal flexibility is derived in the context of elasticity. To solve the resulting system of governing equations, an efficient pseudo-inverse technique is introduced. The direct inspection of the resulting solutions provides the location and severity of damage in a curved thin beam. This study confirms that there is a strong linear relationship between the curvature of modal flexibility and flexural damage in the selected class of structures. Several numerical case studies are provided to justify the performance of the proposed approach. The proposed method introduces a way to avoid the singularity and mode selection problems from earlier attempts.

Damage detection in truss bridges using vibration based multi-criteria approach

  • This paper uses dynamic computer simulation techniques to develop and apply a multi-criteria procedure using non-destructive vibration-based parameters for damage assessment in truss bridges. In addition to changes in natural frequencies, this procedure incorporates two parameters, namely the modal flexibility and the modal strain energy. Using the numerically simulated modal data obtained through finite element analysis of the healthy and damaged bridge models, algorithms based on modal flexibility and modal strain energy changes before and after damage are obtained and used as the indices for the assessment of structural health state. The application of the two proposed parameters to truss-type structures is limited in the literature. The proposed multi-criteria based damage assessment procedure is therefore developed and applied to truss bridges. The application of the approach is demonstrated through numerical simulation studies of a single-span simply supported truss bridge with eight damage scenarios corresponding to different types of deck and truss damage. Results show that the proposed multi-criteria method is effective in damage assessment in this type of bridge superstructure.

Study on Seismic Performance of RC Column with Super-Flexibility Membrane (고연성재 보강 철근콘크리트 기둥의 내진성능 연구)

  • This study presents the evaluations of seismic performance and displacement ductility for two types of RC columns: existing RC column without SFM (Super Flexibility Membrane) and CSF (RC columns strengthened with SFM). After they are analyzed by the experiment as well as FEM, crack patterns and load-displacement curve of CSF by the former are shown to similar to those of CSF by the latter. The flexural cracks are dominant in CSF, whereas shear cracks in CNF (existing RC column without SFM). Displacement ductility of CSF is shown significantly to increase as well as ultimate displacement, compared to those of CNF. Therefore CSF can be replaced to CNF in order to increase the seismic performance and displacement ductility.

  • The flexible arm has considerable structural flexibility. Because of its flexibility, the dynamic nodel is very complex and difficult to get. In this paper, fuzzy logic controller(FLC) of the single-link flexible arm is proposed, for FLC does not require any mathematical model of the plant. Noncolocated control is used and the choice of linguistic variables are examined. The simulation results are presented to show the possibility of FLC for flexible arm.
