This study presents a methodology to predict the hardenability of quenched carbon steels. The equation of transient heat conduction is analyzed to formulate a cooling curve by a finite element method which incorperates coupled effects of temperature on physical properties, the metallic structures and also the latent heat by phase transformation. The volume traction of martensite and pearlite are the structural analysis for hardenability analysis. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of adopting a full quench model respectively. This procedure could be used as the database for optimal condition of heat treatment processes.
This paper aims at demonstrating the feasibility of active control of beams with a multiobjective state-feedback control technique. The multiobjective state-feedback controller is designed on a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach for the multiobjective synthesis. The design objectives are to achieve a mix of Hoo performance and H2 performance satisfying constraints on the closed-loop pole locations in the face of model uncertainties. The controller is also designed to reject the effects of the noise and external of disturbances. For the theoretical analysis, the governing equation of motion is derived by Hamilton's principle to describe the dynamics of a smart structural system. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the integrated robust controller in damping out the multiple vibration modes of the piezo/beam system.
Dynamic interaction analysis of surface structure on layered half-space is performed in frequency domain under incident wave excitation. This present study adopts a coupling method that combines the finite element(FE) for the flexible structures and boundary element(BE) for the layered half-space. A semi-analytical approach is employed to reduce the integration range of wavenumbers in the BE formula. For the incident wave input, the response is decomposed and formulated after the impedance matrix for the structure system. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the method. The examples show the feasibility of an extended application to the complicated dynamic analysis of structures on layered media under incident wave excitation.
A geometrically non-linear finite element formulation of spatial cable networks is presented using three cable elements. Firstly, derivation procedures of tangent stiffness and mass matrices for the space truss element and the elastic catenary cable element, and the isoparametric cable element are summarized. The load incremental method based on Newton-Raphson iteration method and the dynamic relaxation method are presented in order to determine the initial static state of cable nets subjected to self-weights and support motions. Furthermore, static non-linear analysis of cable structures under additional live loads are performed based on the initial configuration. Challenging example problems are presented and discussed in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the present finite element method and investigate static non-linear behaviors of cable nets.
For each construction material used, there is certain theoretical limit in sizes. For tall building construction, the reduction in slab weight is the first step to take in order to break such size limits. In this paper, the feasibility of such objective is proven and given by numerical analysis result. For a typical building slab, both concrete and advanced composite sandwich panels are considered. The concrete slab is treated as a special orthotropic plate to obtain more accurate result. For each panel, the deflection under the dead and live loads is compared, since both tensile and compressive strengths of the composites are far more higher than those of concrete. All types of sandwich panels considered, except one case, have weights less than one tenth of that of reinforced concrete slab, with deflections less than that of the concrete slab. The cost analysis result and manufacturing methods will be reported later.
It is necessary to estimate the dynamic characteristics of stay cables ie., the natural frequencies and the damping ratios of the stay cables to design cable damper for appropriate mitigation of cable vibrations and/or to estimate the tension of cables in service. In this study, a cable exciting robot for evaluating dynamic characteristics of stay cables has been developed, and the feasibility of the developed system has been demonstrated through a field test on the stay cable installed at the test yard of Highway and Transportation Technology Institute (HTTI). The dynamic characteristics of the stay cable were estimated based on acceleration data as well as displacement measured by digital image processing technique.
Guss asphalt used in pavement of a steel deck bridge may cause severe stress and displacement on the bridge as it is treated using very high temperatures ranging from $220^{\circ}C$ to $260^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is critical to estimate the thermal effect of Guss asphalt on the steel deck bridge before the width and pattern of the unit portion are decided to minimize impact. In this study, introduce a new analysis method styled the Heat source of equivalent of the cable stayed bridge were conducted to verify the feasibility of numerical value analysis by comparing the results with the data measured. The thermal effects of Guss asphalt on the steel deck bridge according to temperature changes were also studied.
In this paper, to analyze the initial valued non-homogeneous elastic half space by the scaled boundary analysis, the infinite element approach was introduced. The free surface of the initial valued non-homogeneous elastic half space was mode1ed as a circumferential direction of boundary scaled boundary coordinate. The infinite element was used to represent the infinite length of the free surface. The initial value of material property(elastic modulus) was considered by the combination of the position of the sealing center and the power function of the radial direction. By use of the mapping type infinite element, the consistent e1ements formulation could be available. The performance and the feasibility of proposed approach are examined by two numerical examples.
The use of the shape memory alloy, Nitinol wire, is investigated as an actuator for enhancing the damping in structural vibration systems. The first-order mathematical model of the Nitinol wire is obtained from the experimental data for an actuator. Finite element method is utilized for the strain gage sensor model, which is installed at the root of cantilever beam. A simple system, cantilever beam, is built as a flexible structural system to implement a control law with the Nitinol wire actuator. The system model including sensor and actuator is derived, which agrees with the experimental results. The actuator dynamics is augmented with the system so as to design PI controller and the one of robust controllers, LQG/LTR controller, and the control laws are implemented experimentally. The experimental study shows the feasibility of utilizing the Nitinol wire as an actuator for the purpose of vibration control.
