Purpose: This study was conducted to study the acceptance of disability and influential factors between hemiplegic elderly and non-elderly after stroke. Methods: Data were collected with questionnaires from 104 elderly and 134 non-elderly with hemiplegia. Data were analyzed by $x^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA, ANCOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. Results: Significant predictors of acceptance of disability were family support, activities of daily living, and age, and these factors accounted for 24.2% of variance in acceptance of disability in the hemiplegic elderly. On the other hand, the significant predictors were family support and employment, and these factors accounted for 32.3% of variance in acceptance of disability in the non-elderly. Family support was the most influential variable in both the elderly and the non-elderly. Conclusion: An acceptance of disability program for the hemiplegic elderly should be designed differently from that for the non-elderly.
Number of elderly patients requiring nerve blocks have been increasing in recent years. We had two elderly patients who suffered stroke one day and three days after lumbar facet joint block and lumbar single epidural block respectively. Both patients due to their advanced age had potential risk factor to suffer one or more of the following; stroke, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Due to our experience with these patients, we suggested the following: (1) Nerve blocks should be reconsidered for elderly patient who posesses a potential risk factor to suffer a stroke. (2) Prior to invasive block administration of mild sedatives or analgesics may provide beneficial effects for patients with hypertension. (3) Adequately informed consent must be fully discussed time of consultation with patient scheduled for nerve block especially for elderly and risky patient.

The goal of this study was to examine how effective stroke prevention program is for body mass index, blood pressure, blood glucose, and serum lipids of the elderly in the rural areas. The stroke prevention program included health care education, nutrition guidance and exercise. The program was provided for 12 weeks(36 sessions) from May to August, 2014. Participants were 55 elderly people in the rural areas; 28 people in the experimental group and 27 in the control group. The results of before and after the experiment showed that body mass index(p<.001), TC(p<.001), TG(p=.047), and LDL(p=.010) were significantly better in the experimental group compared to the control group. Also, after the program, the figures of body mass index, fasting blood glucose, TC, TG, and HDL in the control group were decreased, while those of LDL were increased. Study findings indicate that the stroke prevention program is effective and can be recommended as a precaution against the stroke of the elderly in the rural area by preventing risk factors beforehand.

The data was collected by interviewsand a self reported Questionnaire, during the period from October, 2003 to April, 2004. Results: The results of this study were as follows. The mean score of wellbeing of family caregivers was 60.6412.63. The factors related to wellbeing of family caregivers were sex, age, education, depression, illness severity, ADL, paralysis, and speech disability in elderly characteristics. Among family caregivers characteristics, education, relation, and burden were significantly related. In situational variables, family income and the previous relationship between the elderly and family caregivers were related to wellbeing. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of wellbeing was the burden of family caregivers. A combination of the depression of elderly and age of family caregivers accounted for 50.3% of the variance of wellbeing. Conclusions: On developing the nursing intervention for improving wellbeing of family caregivers, many factors should be considered, especially caregiver burden, and elderly depression.

The purpose of this study was to identity the types of leisure and to examine the quality of life according to them and suggest the basic resources about leisure on elderly chronic stroke. The subject of this study was elderly chronic strokes(n=80) in Gwang Ju. A total of 80 questionnaires from subjects were analyzed. The social leisure activity shows more clear and positive purpose and more higher quality of life than private leisure. But it also has limited time and require more money. Elderly chronic stroke presents passive and limited leisure activity and shows low satisfaction about leisure. But the leisures that needed more physical movements show higher quality of life. So leisure activity program which is able to support and assist the limited body function will be helpful to increase the quality of life of elderly chronic stroke.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of self-help management program which strengthens self-efficacy for post stroke elders who attend day care center in Chongju. One group pretest-posttest design was used, and the subjects were 7 post stroke elders with hemiparesis. The self-help management program consisted of 5 sessions and each session included group education on stroke, ROM exercise, recreation and self-care strategies. Those strategies for encouraging and reinforcing self-efficacy provided verbal persuasion, performance accomplishment and vicarious experience. All subjects were questioned before and after the program about ADLs, IADLs, self-efficacy, self-care behavior and depression. The analysis of data revealed that the program was effective to increase the IADLs, self-efficacy and self-care behavior. However, there was no significant difference between pre and post ADLs and depression. The results indicated that this program may be adopted to improve the physical and psychological function of post stroke elderly patients in community settings.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of muscle fatigue on knee joint position sense in the young, elderly adults, and stroke patients. METHODS: The subjects were recruited into three groups; young group(YG)(N=15), elderly group(EG)(N=15), and stroke group(SG)(N=15). Exercise-induced fatigue was achieved by repeated active exercise 60 times on an angle at 10 to 100 degrees of the knee joint with an angle speed of $120^{\circ}/s$, with three sets for 15 minutes. Evaluation was performed for determination of repositioning error using passive angle repositioning (PAR) and active angle repositioning (AAR). RESULT: Regarding the error score for the knee joint position sense in both the baseline and muscle fatigue, significant increases were observed between the YG and EG (p<.05), and between the EG and SG (p<.01), and between YG and SG (p<.05) in the PAR, YG and SG (p<.05) in the AAR. CONCLUSION: In particular, the results of this study indicate that management and intervention for elderly adults and stroke patients can result in improvement of proprioception.
Purpose: This study was conducted to test the effect of a 5 weeks health education program on stroke for rural elderly people. Methods: A total of 55 rural elders in Kok Sung County were participated in the health education on stroke program. Descriptive statistics, and paired t-test were used for statistical analysis with SPSS 12.0. Results: The results are summarized as follows : Mean age was 67.3 years and 88.2% of participants were female. The mean pre-test scores for knowledge of stroke were 0.35 and post-test, 0.85 (p< .001). Percentage of accurate response rates of warning signs of stroke were sudden dizziness pre-test 45.5% post-test 80.0%, sudden trouble speaking or understanding, pre-test 27.3% post-test 41.8%, sudden trouble walking, loss of balance or coordination, pre-test 32.7% post-test 70.9%, sudden numbness or weakness of the arm or leg, especially on one side of the body, pre-test 47.3% post-test 72.7%, sudden confusion, pre-test 27.3% post-test 81.8%, sudden numbness or weakness of the face especially on one side of the body, pre-test 40.0% post-test 76.4%, sudden severe headache with no known cause, pre-test 40.0% post-test 70.9%, Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, pre-test 38.1% post-test 66.0%, nausea or vomiting pre-test 16.4% post-test 43.6%. The increases after the health education on stroke were statistically significant. Conclusions: Health education on stroke for rural elderly people are needed and should focus on community health care programs, especially for those who are older, had a low level of education, and low socio-economical status.
