Marine diesel engine production and refinements sought a continuous increase on mean effective pressure and thermal efficiency. These results in increased maximum combustion pressure within the cylinder and vibratory torque in crankshaft. As such, crankshaft should be designed and compacted within its fatigue strength. In this paper, the 8H25/33P($3,155ps{\times}900rpm$) engine for ship propulsion was selected as a case study, and tile strength analysis of its crankshaft is carried out by. simplified method recommended by IACS M53 and a detailed method with the crankshaft assumed as a continuous beam and bearing supported in its flexibility. The results of these two methods are compared with each other.

In this study, as a basic research to improve braking efficiency of a ventilated disk brake, we carried out a thermal stress analysis. From analysis result, we knew that a maximum mechanical stress by braking pressure and friction force is applicable to 5 percent of yield strength and has no effect on a fatigue life's decrease for brake disk material. While, a maximum thermal stress by frictonal heat is applicable to 43 percent of yield strength and locates on a friction surface. So, we have found that a thermal stress is the primary factor of crack initiation on a friction surface of disk brake

A two-dimensional progressive failure analysis method is presented for the strength characterization of the composite joints under pin loading. The eight-nodes laminated she]1 element is utilized based on the updated Lagrangian formulation. The criteria by Yamada-Sun, Tsai-Wu, and the maximum stress are used for the failure estimation. The stiffness of failed layer is degraded by the complete unloading method. No factor depending on test is included in the finite element analysis except for the material strength and stiffness. Total 20 plate specimens with and without hole are tested to validate the finite element prediction. The Tsai-Wu failure criterion most conservatively estimates the strength of laminate, and the maximum stress criterion yields the highest strength because it does not consider the coupling of the failure modes. The strength by Yamada-Sun method neglecting the matrix failure effect are located between other two methods and shows best agreement with test result for laminate with hole.
Stainless steel sheets are commonly used for vehicles such as the bus and the train. These are mainly fabricated by spot-welding. By the way, its fatigue strength is lower than base metal due to high stress concentration at the nugget. edge of the spot-welding. By the way, its fatigue strength is lower than base metal due to high stress concentration at the nugget edge of the spot-welding point. Especially, it is influenced by welding conditions as well as geometrical factors of spot welded joint. Therefore, it is not too much to say that structural rigidity and strength of spot-welded structures is decided by fatigue strength of spot welded lap joint. Thus, it is necessary to establish a reasonable and systematic long life design criterion for the spot-welded structure. In this study, numerical stress analysis was performed by using 3-dimensional finite element model on IB-type spot-welded lap joint of 304 stainless steel sheet under tension-shear load. Fatigue tests were also conducted on them having various thickness, joint angle, lapped length, and width of the plate. From the results, it was found that fatigue strength of IB-type spot-welded lap joints was influenced by its geometrical factors, however, could be systematically rearranged by maximum principal stress ({TEX}$σ_{1max}${/TEX}) at the nugget edge of the spot-welding point.
Objective: About one-third of college students are exposed to stress to the point that their academic performance is negatively affected. To provide useful information for managing the mental health of young people by analyzing the perceived stress level, depression level, and life satisfaction according to the amount of physical activity and the level of muscular strength in male college students. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: Among 304 students who participated in the health exercise class at Sahmyook University in Seoul, the amount of physical activity and the level of muscular strength were divided into 3 quartiles, respectively, and the perceived stress level, depression level, and life satisfaction were analyzed through one-way ANOVA. The physical activity level and muscle strength level of the subjects were ranked, divided into 3 groups, and the difference in variables according to the group was verified. Results: There was no difference in perceived stress level, depression level, and life satisfaction according to the amount of physical activity, but statistically significant differences were shown in perceived stress scale(p=0.008) and life satisfaction(p=0.030) according to muscular strength. Conclusions: Policies to increase physical activity are important to improve and manage the mental health of young people, but it is judged to be more meaningful to provide an environment that can improve muscular strength.

Fracture behaviors of SCM435 high strength bolt have been studied including macroscopic and microscopic fracture observation, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, Vickers hardness test and applied stress evaluation. cracks (ratchet marks) were generated by the repetitive loads acting on the bolts, initial stress of bolt and the stress concentration. The applied stress was found to be slightly higher than the fatigue limit of the material. The initial stress of bolt must be removed, and the mold temperature during the process must be maintained by room temperature. Bolts are recommended to be peened to improve fatigue limit.

Fatigue tests of transverse fillet weldment were performed under out-of-plane bending loads. Significant increase of the fatigue strength was observed under out-of-plane bending loads, compared to the one under in-plane loads (axial loads). Applicability of the crack propagation analysis using LEFM for the surface crack of fillet weldment were investigated as well, in parallel with the fatigue tests. For the rational assessment of the fatigue strength of welded ship structures where combined stresses of the in-plane axial stress and the out-of-plane bending stress are induced simultaneously due to complexity of applied load and structural geometry, further investigation is recommended for the effect of the out-of-plane bending stress on the fatigue strength of weldment.

The design challenges when attempting to obtain sufficient strength for a deepwater steel catenary riser (SCR) include high stress near the hang-off location, an elevated beam-column buckling load due to the effective compression in the touchdown zone (TDZ), and increased stress and low-cycle fatigue damage in the TDZ. Therefore, a systematic strength analysis is required for the proper design of an SCR. However, deepwater SCR analysis is a new research area. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop an overall analysis procedure for a deepwater SCR. The structural behavior of a deepwater SCR under various environmental loading conditions was investigated, and a sensitivity analysis was conducted with respect to various parameters such as the SCR weight, weight of the internal contents, hang-off angle (HOA), and vertical soil stiffness. Based on a deepwater SCR design example, it was found that the maximum stress of an SCR occurred at a hang-off location under parallel loading direction with respect to the riser plane, except for a wave dominant dynamic survival loading condition. Furthermore, the tensile stress governed the total stress of the SCRs, whereas the bending stress governed the total stress at the TDZ. The weight of the SCR and internal contents affected the maximum stress of the SCR more than the HOA and vertical soil stiffness, because the weight of the SCR, including the internal contents, was directly related to its tensile stress.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the diameter and direction of the plunger and simulation of the periodontal ligament (PDL) affected the stress distribution in endodontically treated premolars. Methods: A fracture strength test was simulated via finite element analysis. A base model was set up, and the following parameters were modified: plunger diameter (3 mm vs. 6 mm), plunger direction (vertical vs. $135^{\circ}$ angular to the central fossa), and PDL simulation. The analysis was conducted using the CosmosWorks structural analysis program, and the results are presented in terms of von Mises stresses. Results: The smaller plunger increased the stresses at the contact area of the crown, but the plunger diameter had no effect on the stress distribution within the root. An angular plunger direction increased stresses within the root, as well as at the buccal cusp of the crown, compared with the vertical direction. Simulation of the PDL caused higher stress accumulation, especially in the cervical region of the root. Conclusions: The plunger diameter had no effect on the stress distribution in the roots, whereas the plunger direction and PDL simulation did affect the stress distribution. More stringent standards can be established by taking such parameters into account when performing fracture testing in future studies.
In this study, obtaining theoretical stress-strain curves and determining the parameters defining the equivalent rectangular stress block were aimed for 3 and 4-layered rectangular Reinforced Concrete (RC) cross-sections subjected to flexure. For these aims, the analytical stress-strain model proposed by Hognestad was chosen for the concrete grades (20 MPa≤fck≤60 MPa) used in this study. The tensile strength of the concrete was neglected and the thickness of the concrete layers in the compression zone of the concrete cross-section was taken as equal. In addition, while concrete strength was kept constant within each layer, concrete strengths belonging to separate layers were increased from the neutral axis towards the outer face of the compression zone of the concrete cross-section. After the equivalent rectangular stress block parameters were determined by numerical iterations, variations of these parameters depending on concrete strength in layers and layer numbers were obtained. Finally, some analytical equations have been proposed to predict the equivalent stress block parameters for the 3 and 4-layered RC cross-sections and validities of these proposed equations were shown by different metrics in this study.
