This study explored adjustment of school-aged children from low-income divorced families. Specifically, protective factors for children's self-perceived competence and behavior problems were investigated with children's coping strategies, perceived social support, parents' childrearing style, and parental stress. Subjects of this study were 126 children of 4 to 6 grade and their custodial parents(38 fathers, 88 mothers) from divorced families. Children's self-perceived competence and behavior problems were not different neither by children's sex nor custodial parent's sex. When children used more positive and less negative coping strategies, and when parents experienced less childrearing stress, children perceived themselves to be more competent. Similarly, when children used more positive and less negative coping strategies, received more social support, they perceived themselves to be more adequate. Children whose parents had high levels of childrearing stress showed more internalized and externalized behavior problems. Furthermore, children who perceived less supports from peers showed more behavior problems.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of perceived economic stress & marital conflict on the quality of life under economic crisis in Korea. Data were collected from 236 couples during May and June 1998, when the Korean economy was under the control of International Monetary Fund (IMF). Many couples reported the unstability of job and the experience of economic strain events. However, the perceived level of marital conflict and the quality of life were not so bad. Husbands perceived economic stress and quality of life higher than wives did. The path analysis showed gender difference in the perceived economic stress as well as in the indirect effect of economic strain events on the quality of life through economic stress and marital conflict. In addition, family income directly affected the quality of life for husbands, but not for wives.

Purpose: Health behaviors for metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevention should be emphasized from early adulthood. There is little information on psychosocial factors associated with health behaviors for MetS prevention. The aim of this study was to determine whether there would be a mediating effect of perceived stress on the association between social support and health behaviors for MetS prevention among university students. Methods: This cross-sectional and correlation study was conducted with 502 university students in South Korea. Social support, perceived stress, and lifestyle evaluation for metabolic syndrome scales were used. Online questionnaire survey was conducted between November and December 2019. The mediating effect of social support on health behaviors for MetS prevention was analyzed using PROCESS macro program with bootstrapping method to test our hypotheses. Results: Social support directly influenced perceived stress (β=-.35, p<.001) and health behaviors for MetS prevention (β=.14, p=.002). Health behaviors for MetS prevention was indirectly influenced by perceived stress (β=-.25, p<.001). The size of indirect effect of social support on health behaviors for MetS prevention was 0.06. Conclusions: The association of social support and health behaviors for MetS prevention was partially mediated by perceived stress among university students. Therefore, a university-based nursing intervention should comprise social support strategies with stress management to promote health behaviors for MetS prevention.
The purpose of this convergence study was to examine whether smartphone addiction predisposition mediated the relationship between perceived stress and health-promoting lifestyle in university students. A total of 332 subjects, recruited from a university in Seoul, participated by completing a survey which included questions about perceived stress, health-promoting lifestyle and smartphone addiction predisposition. As are result of the analysis, perceived stress had a significant positive effect on smartphone addiction predisposition. Perceived stress and smartphone addiction predisposition had significant negative effect on health-promoting lifestyle. Therefore, smartphone addiction predisposition had a mediating effect within the relationship of perceived stress and health-promoting lifestyle. Based on these results, we discussed the necessity of managing the stress and smartphone addiction to improve the health-promoting lifestyle of university students.
Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anxiety symptoms and its association with psychological factors in patients with hypertension. Methods : The Participants included 124 patients with hypertension. Anxiety symptoms were evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Socio-demographics, perceived stress, state-trait anger, life satisfaction, and ego resiliency were assessed. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were carried out to examine the impact of perceived stress, state-trait anger, and life satisfaction on anxiety symptoms. In addition, moderated regression analysis was performed to explore the moderating effect of ego resiliency between perceived stress and anxiety symptoms. Results : A total of 17 subjects (13.7%) were identified as having anxiety symptoms. Higher perceived stress and state-trait anger, and lower life satisfaction were found to be significant correlates of anxiety symptoms. In the final model, higher levels of perceived stress (β=0.378, p<0.001) and trait anger (β=0.320, p<0.001) were related to higher levels of anxiety symptoms, while a higher level of life satisfaction (β=-0.166, p=0.025) was associated with a lower level of anxiety symptoms. Further, ego resiliency buffered the negative effect of perceived stress on anxiety symptoms. Conclusion : This study demonstrated the prevalence of anxiety symptoms and associated psychological factors among patients with hypertension. Our findings suggest that improving life satisfaction and ego-resiliency as well as controlling stress and anger may be important in the management of anxiety symptoms in patients with hypertension.
Objectives : A precedent research has documented that occupational stress is closely associated with increased the risk of fatigue and decreased in job satisfaction. This study was conducted in an effort to assess the relationship of occupational stress to self-perceived fatigue and job satisfaction by using job strain model. Methods : The number of respondents was 122 dental hygienist who work in dental clinic and period of the investigation was July 2009 through september 2009. A structured questionnaire was employed to evaluate the participants' sociodemographics, job-related factors, health-related behaviors, occupational stress, job satisfaction and self-perceived fatigue. Occupational stress and self-perceived fatigue were assessed using the Korean Occupational Stress Scale-Short form (KOSS-SF) and the Multidimensional Fatigue Scale (MFS), respectively. Results : In job strain model, the ratio of Q2(High Strain Job) group that more susceptible to disease by stress than other group was 16% and the proportion of high fatigue group(Q3, Q4 group) and low job satisfaction group(Q3, Q4 group) was 48%, 45% respectively. In logistic regression analyses, a High Strain Job group was associated with higher odds of react factor(fatigue, job satisfaction) and the odds was down by 3.3%~7.5% after adjustment for age, smoking, alcohol drinking, regular exercise. So the effective strategy for fatigue, job satisfaction reduction for dental hygienist requires additional program focusing on innovated work environment that provide a enough leisure time and exercise program considering the personality traits. Conclusions : The results of this study suggest that occupational stress is a determinant predictor of self perceived fatigue and job satisfaction. Thus, a stress management program for the reduction of occupational stress, and the promotion of dental hygienist impact assessment health and quality of life is strongly recommended.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a cognitive behavioral stress management program on perceived stress, coping strategies, and cortisol in people with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2. Method: Patients with type 2 diabetes were recruited from of a public health center in an urban area. Thirty-five participants (experimental group=17, and control group=18) enrolled. The experimental group received small group-based cognitive behavioral stress management training for eighty minutes per session, once a week for eight weeks. Data were collected at baseline and ninth week for perceived stress, affect-oriented coping, problem-oriented coping, and cortisol. The data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0. Results: The experimental group had significantly less perceived stress (t=-9.82, P<.001) and cortisol (t=-2.14, p=.040) than the control group. No significant group differences were found in affect-oriented coping (t=-.43, p=.673) or problem-oriented coping (t=1.40, P<.170). Conclusion: These results suggest that a cognitive behavioral stress management program can have positive effects on perceived stress and cortisol in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. Further research with a larger sample and for a longer period is needed to expand our understanding of the effects of the program for patients with diabetes mellitus type 2.

This study examined the relationship between job stress, burnout, and job satisfaction perceived by 185 beauty workers. Analysis and structural model analyses were conducted to derive the main results. The results are summarized and presented as follows. First, the job stress perceived by beauty workers has a statistically significant positive effect on burnout. Second, job stress perceived by beauty workers has a statistically significant negative effect on job satisfaction. Third, burnout felt by beauty workers has a statistically significant negative effect on job satisfaction. Through the above results, job stress and burnout should be lowered in order to increase the job satisfaction of beauty workers, and in particular, job stress must effectively be lowered in consideration of the fact that job stress is a determinant that increases burnout and reduces job satisfaction. A method must be discovered to achieve this end.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of aroma inhalation on stress responses (physical symptoms, levels of anxiety, perceived stresses)of nursing students. Method: This study was a quasi-experimental research using anon-equivalent pre-post design and was conducted from June 1 to June 5, 2002. The subjects consisted of 77 junior nursing students who were divided into 39 experimental group members and 38 control group members. A pretest and Post-test were conducted to measure body symptoms, the level of anxiety, and the level of perceived stress. In the experimental group, aromas were given using an aroma lamp, lavender, peppermint, rosemary and Clary-Sage. In the control group, the treatment was not administered. Result: As a result of administering aroma inhalation to nursing students, their physical symptoms decreased, their anxiety scores were low, and their perceived stress scores were low, showing that aroma inhalation could be a very effective stress management method. Conclusion: Nursing educators should play an important role in contributing to college students' physical and psychological health by helping enhance their recognition of stress management and effectively relieving their stress using essential oils.
