  • Purpose: This study was done to identify factors (pain stress, perceived stress, pain disability, fatigue, depression) strategies used by elders to cope with pain based on their type of pain belief. Method: Data were collected from 314 elders in community settings in Seoul from September to December of 2007. Cluster analysis, t-test, and ANOVA were used to analyze data. Result: The types of pain belief were classified as the following groups: Self-blame, Enduring & Mysterious, and Short-term & Understandable. Perceived stress (t=2.36, p=.02), social support (t=2.24, p=.03), extent of pain relief (t=2.39, p=.02), and duration of pain relief (t=2.09, p=.04) were important factors for active and passive coping in the Self-blame group. Pain stress (t=2.39, p=.01) and depression (t=-3.99, p=.00) were significantly related to the active coping in the Enduring & Mysterious group. Perceived stress (t=2.55, p=.01) was an important factor in the passive coping in the Short-term & Understandable group. Conclusion: Considering different types of pain belief in elders and factors that are significantly related to different coping strategies, future nursing interventions should be population specific to encourage active coping strategies and to decrease passive coping strategies.

Method: This study employed a quasi-experimental non-equivalent pre-and-post test to compare the two groups. Data was collected from 32 subjects from March 10. to September 5, 2003 at an NICU located in S. city. In the sample, fifteen mothers were in the experimental group and seventeen were in the control group. A workbook program was provided twice during a period from two-three days after the baby's admission to one week after the first intervention. The instruments used were the PSS and self confidence scale. Data was analyzed by means of frequency, SD, $x^2-test$, Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney test, and the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Result: There was a significant difference in perceived stress levels between the experimental and control group (U=2.366, p=.018). There was not a significant difference in maternal role confidence between the two groups (U=1.002, p=.316). There was a significant difference in breastfeeding practice between the two groups ($x^2=4.910$, p=.035). Conclusion: It is concluded that a program using a workbook has a positive effect on decreasing the perceived stress level and increasing breastfeeding practice.

Tiredness was measured in four cases: in lessons, before school, in the early evening and at weekends. Adolescents felt most tired in lessons and before school, and leat at weekends. Irregularity of meal times and skipping breakfast were positively correlated with tiredness in lessons and befor school. Consumption of some foods was related to perceived tiredness. High sugar or fat containing ice-cream, hamburger of fizzy drinks in boys, and crisps and cookies in girls were positively associated with tiredness. Whereas beans and mushrooms were negatively associated with tiredness in girls. Life stress(by scholastic problem and personal problem) of adolescents was positively related to tiredness. The contribution of stress to tiredness was much greater than of food behavior according to multiple linear regression .There was no relationship between nutrients intake and tiredness in lessons and before school which were more strongly influenced by stress, whereas the relationship was found at weekend without influences of stress. The more tired, the lower NARs(nutrient adequacy ratio) of energy, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin B$_2$, and niacin were. In conclusion, some eating behavior and psychological factor can cause tiredness in adolescents, but tiredness in school and before school had more of a psychological cause than at weekend.
