  • This paper focuses on algorithm innovation of NAND Flash Memory for enhancing cell lifetime. During flash memory read/write/erase, the voltage of a specific cell should be a valid voltage level. If not, we cannot read the data correctly. This type of interference/disturbance tends to be serious when program and erase operation will go on. This is because FN tunneling results in tunnel oxide damage due to increased trap site on repetitive high biased state. In order to resolve this problem, we make the cell degradation by reducing the amount of stress in terms of erase cell, resulting in minimizing the cell disturbance on erase verify.

  • Long-term effects of Ganoderma lucidum (GL) on memory and oxidative stress of senescence-accelerated mice (SAM) were investigated. Senescence-resistant (R1) and prone (P8) strains of SAM were fed GL diets, premixed with low (20 mg/kg/day, T1) or high (200 mg/kg/day, T2) levels of GL powder for 9 months starting from young (3 months of age) or for 5 months starting from old (7 months of age). After the final feeding at 12 months of age, all animals were subjected to passive avoidance test for the evaluation of memory function. In addition, the changes in hepatic thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) and glutathione were analyzed. SAMP8 fed GL diets from old age (7 months) exhibited the improvement of memory, although GL rather inhibited the memory function of both SAMR1 and SAMP8 mice fed diets from young (3 months of age). Hepatic TBARS contents were decreased in SAMP8 fed high GL diet for 9 months and in SAMR1 fed low GL diet for 5 months. Hepatic glutathione content was also remarkably increased in SAMR1 following both feeding periods, and less extent in SAMP8 fed diet for 5 months of age. Taken together, it is proposed that GL extracts may play an anti-aging role through antioxidant action, and thereby may improve the senescence-related memory dysfunction.

  • Objectives: Executive dysfunctions including working memory deficit have been suggested to be one of the major neuropsychological etiologies of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the augmentative effects of working memory training on the behavioral problems, quality of life, and parental stress of medicated children with ADHD. Methods: Twenty-five children with ADHD, aged 9 to 19 years, who were being treated with ADHD medication, were included. The participants were trained with a commercially available and computerized working memory program ($Cogmed^{(R)}$) for 5 weeks without any alteration of their medication. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), KIDSCREEN-52 quality of life measure, and Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF) were administered before training, and 4 weeks and 7 months after training, respectively. Results: After completing the training, the anxiety/depression, social problems, thought problems, attention problems, aggressive behavior, and externalizing problems scores in the CBCL were significantly reduced. The score on the Parent-child dysfunctional interaction in the PSI-SF was also decreased. However, the scores related to the quality of life were not changed. These changes were still observed 7 months after the training. Conclusion: Cogmed working memory training can be a promising training option for the additional improvement of behavioral problems and parental stress in medicated children with ADHD.

  • The strengthening of a metal matrix composite(MMC) by the shape memory effect(SME) of dispersed TiNi particles was theoretically studied. An analytical model was constructed for the prediction of the average residual stress(<$\delta$>m) on the base of the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method. The analysis was performed on the TiNi particle/Al metal matrix composites with varying volume fractions and prestrains of the particle. The residual stress caused by the shape memory of predeformed fillers has been predicted to contribute significantly to the strengthening of this composite.

  • A structure using the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) returns to its initial shape by increasing or decreasing temperature under initial residual stress. Through the thermo-mechanical constitutive equation of shape memory alloy(SMA) proposed by Lagoudas et al., we simulate the behavior of a double actuator in which two SMA wires are attached to the tip of panel under the initially given residual stress. Through the numerical results conducted in the present study, the proposed actuator device is suitable for repeated actuation. The simulation algorithm proposed in the present study can be applied extensively to the analysis of the assembled .system of SMA-actuator and host structure in the practical applications.

  • Puerariae flos (PF) is a traditional oriental medicinal plant and has clinically been prescribed for a long time. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of PF on repeated stress-induced alterations of learning and memory on a Morris water maze (MWM) test in ovariectomized (OVX) female rats. The changes in the reactivity of the cholinergic system were assessed by measuring the immunoreactive neurons of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) in the hippocampus after behavioral testing. The female rats were randomly divided into four groups: the nonoperated and nonstressed group (normal), the sham-operated and stressed group (control), the ovariectomized and stressed group (OS), and the ovariectomized, stressed and PF treated group (OSF). Rats were exposed to immobilization stress (IMO) for 14 d (2 h/d), and PF (400 mg/kg, p.o.) was administered 30 min before IMO stress. Results showed that treatments with PF caused significant reversals of the stress-induced deficits in learning and memory on a spatial memory task, and also increased the ChA T immunoreactivities. In conclusion, administration of PF improved spatial learning and memory in OVX rats, and PF may be useful for the treatment of postmenopausal-related dementia.

  • Plants exposed to environmental stress for long durations often can adapt to stress conditions with improved tolerance. Moreover this acquired tolerance to stress can be retained even after reverting to destressed growth conditions, which is known to stress memory. In these adaptation and stress memory processes, epigenetic regulation, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications play a key role. Here, we showed that regenerated rice plants from embryogenic callus exposed to gradually increasing NaCl concentrations (up to 120 mM NaCl) acquired salt tolerance and their enhanced tolerance are inherited to subsequent generations. The rice plants (R0) regenerated from rice callus under saline conditions were transplanted into normal paddy field and R1 seeds were harvested. These R1 seeds displayed higher germination rate on MS medium containing 100mM NaCl than wild-type. The callus derived from R1 seeds showed better growth than control callus on high salinity medium. And the salt-adapted R1 plants exhibited higher chlorophyll contents and also higher $K^+/Na^+$ ratio than wild-type rice under saline conditions. The results indicated that rice plants successfully adapted to saline growth conditions during regeneration on high salt medium and moreover this acquired tolerance to salt stress was inherited subsequent generation.

  • Al alloy matrix composite with TiNi shape memory fiber as reinforcement has been fabricated by hot pressing to investigate microstructures and mechanical properties. The analysis of SEM and EDS showed that the composites have shown good interface bonding. The stress-strain behavior of the composites was evaluated at temperatures between 363K and room temperature as a function of prestrain, and it showed that the yield stress at 363K was higher than that of the room temperature. Especially, the yield stress of this composite increases with increasing the amount of prestrain, and it also depends on the volume fraction of fiber and heat treatment. The smartness of the composite is given due to the shape memory effect of the TiNi fiber which generates compressive residual stress in the matrix material when heated after being prestrained. Microstructural observation has revealed that interfacial reactions occur between the matrix and fiber, creating two intermetallic layers.

  • Ti-Ni-Cu alloys are very attractive shape memory alloys for applications as actuators because of a large transformation elongation and a small transformation hysteresis. Rapidly solidified Ti-Ni alloy ribbons have been known to have the shape memory effect and superelasticity superior to the alloy ingots fabricated by conventional casting. In this study, solidification structures and shape memory characteristics of $Ti-Ni_{30}-Cu_{20}$ alloy ribbons prepared by melt spinning were investigated by means of DSC and XRD. Operating parameters to fabricate the amorphous ribbons were the wheel velocity of 55 m/s and the melt spinning temperature of $1500^{\circ}C$. The crystallization temperature was measured to be $440^{\circ}C$. The crystallized ribbons exhibited very fine microstructure after annealing at $440^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes and $460^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes and was deformed up to about 6.8% and 6.23% in ductile manner, respectively. Stress-strain curve of the ribbon exhibited a flat stress-plateau at 64 MPa and this is associated with the stress-induced a B2-B19 martensitic transformation. During cycle deformation with the applied stress of 220 MPa, transformation hysteresis and elongation associated with the B2-B19 transformation were observed to be $4.3^{\circ}C$ and 3.6%.
