Nonlinear Behavior of RC Columns Subjected to Cyclic Loadings (반복하중을 받는 철근콘크리트 기둥의 비선형 거동)

  • A moment-curvature relationship to simulate the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns under cyclic loading is introduced. Unlike previous moment4curvature models and the layered section approach, the proposed model takes into account the bond-slip effect by using a monotonic moment-curvature relationship constructed on the basis of the bond-slip relation and corresponding equilibrium equation at each nodal point. In addition, the use of curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel gives more exact numerical result. The pinching effect caused by axial force is considered with an assumption that the absorbing energy corresponding to any deformation level maintains constant regardless of the magnitude of applied axial lone. The advantages of the proposed model, comparing to layered section approach, may be on the reduction in calculation time and memory space in case of its application to large structures. Finally, correlation studies between analytical result and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.

  • The box system, composed only of reinforced concrete walls and slabs, are adopted by many high-rise apartment buildings recently constructed in Korea. In the buildings, one or more relatively large openings are cut in a shear wall for functional reasons. The openings influence the internal stress of the shear wall and also the structural behavior. Therefore, it is necessary to use subdivided plate elements for accurate analysis of the box system with openings. But it would cost tremendous amount of analysis time and computer memory if the shear wall is subdivided into a finer mesh in the analysis of high-rise buildings. So, it is difficult to apply this modeling method to practical procedure. In this study, an efficient method is proposed for the efficient and accurate analysis of shear wall with openings. The proposed method used the super element and matrix condensations, fictitious beam technique.

  • Emerging data demonstrate pivotal roles for brain insulin resistance and insulin deficiency as mediators of cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). Insulin and insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) regulate neuronal survival, energy metabolism, and plasticity, which are required for learning and memory. Hence, endogenous brain-specific impairments in insulin and IGF signaling account for the majority of AD-associated abnormalities. However, a second major mechanism of cognitive impairment has been linked to obesity and Type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Human and experimental animal studies revealed that neurodegeneration associated with peripheral insulin resistance is likely effectuated via a liver-brain axis whereby toxic lipids, including ceramides, cross the blood brain barrier and cause brain insulin resistance, oxidative stress, neuro-inflammation, and cell death. In essence, there are dual mechanisms of brain insulin resistance leading to AD-type neurodegeneration: one mediated by endogenous, CNS factors; and the other, peripheral insulin resistance with excess cytotoxic ceramide production.

  • Four turbulent $k-{varepsilon}$models(i.e standard model modified models with streamline curvature modification and/or preferential dissipation modification) are applied in order to analyze the tur-bulent flow of wall-attaching offset jet. The upwind numerical scheme was adopted in the present analyses. The streamline curvature modification results in slightly better prediction while the preferential dissipation modification does not. The obtained analytic results will be used as refer-ences for further study regarding Reynolds stress model. In addition this paper introduced a method of increasing nozzle outlet velocity gradually for numercal convergence. Even though the method was simple it was efficient in view of convergent speed CPU running time computer memory storage programming etc.

  • The PZT(lead, zirconium, titanium) based ceramics which, are reported to be ferroelectric materials have their important applications in the areas of surface acoustic waves (SAW), filters, infrared detectors, actuators, ferroelectric random acess memory, speakers, electronic switches etc. Moreover, these PZT materials possess the large electromechanical coupling factor, large spontaneous polarization, low dielectric loss and low internal stress etc. Hence, keeping in view the unique properties of PZT piezoelectric ceramics we also tried to synthesize indigenously the small sized PZT ceramic powder in the laboratory by using the modified sol-gel approach. In this paper, Propyl alcohol based sol-gel method was used for preparation of PZT piezoelectric ceramic. The powder obtained by this sol-gel process was calcined and sintering to reach a pyrochlore-free crystal phase. The characterization of synthesized material was carried out by the XRD analysis and the surface morphology was determined by high resolution scanning electron microscopy.

  • Situation awareness is defined as a person's perception of the elements of the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning and the projection of their status in the near future. Situation awareness is important in attempting to evaluate human behavior in operating complex systems such as aircraft, air traffic control, and nuclear power plant systems. From the literatures this study reviews the relationship between situation awareness and numerous individual, system and environmental factors, and also reviews the methodologies for the empirical measurement of situation awareness applicable to Korea Next Generation Reactor (KNGR) design project. Attention, working memory, workload, stress, system complexity, and automation are presented as critical factors limiting operator's situation awareness. Mental models and goal-directed behavior are hypothesized as important mechanisms overcoming these limits. This study summarized hypothesized guidelines for interface design to improve situation awareness of reactor operators. Some of the guidelines should be tested in the KNGR evaluation experiments in the future.

Methamphetamine-Induced Neuronal Damage: Neurotoxicity and Neuroinflammation

  • Methamphetamine (METH) is a highly addictive psychostimulant and one of the most widely abused drugs worldwide. The continuous use of METH eventually leads to drug addiction and causes serious health complications, including attention deficit, memory loss and cognitive decline. These neurological complications are strongly associated with METH-induced neurotoxicity and neuroinflammation, which leads to neuronal cell death. The current review investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying METH-mediated neuronal damages. Our analysis demonstrates that the process of neuronal impairment by METH is closely related to oxidative stress, transcription factor activation, DNA damage, excitatory toxicity and various apoptosis pathways. Thus, we reach the conclusion here that METH-induced neuronal damages are attributed to the neurotoxic and neuroinflammatory effect of the drug. This review provides an insight into the mechanisms of METH addiction and contributes to the discovery of therapeutic targets on neurological impairment by METH abuse.

  • Phytochemicals have long been known to hold a number of physiological benefits, including antioxidant, anticardiovascular activities and anticancer. The profitable effects of phytochemicals from food sources such as vegetables and fruits, with respect to neurodegeneration, are only beginning to receive increased attention. Alzheimer's disease(AD) is one of the major neurodegenerative diseases for which no treatment is available, and characterized by loss of cognitiion and memory. Many recent studies show that the brain of AD patient is subjected to increased oxidative stress resulting from free radical damage, and the resulting cellular malfunctions are widely believed to be responsible for neuronal degeneration in AD. In this study, the relative relation between D and phytochemicals were surveyed.
