  • This paper presents a comparison of the failure mechanism for high power converted white LEDs(3W) with the commercially available YAG:Ce and silicate phosphor. We carry out the normal aging life test for 10,000 hours, the high temperature aging test for 8,000 hours, the high temperature and humidity aging test for 8,000 hours and the current aging testing for 5,000 hours. The optical and electrical parameters of LEDs were monitored, such as lumen, correlated color temperature (CCT), chromaticity coordinates(x, y), thermal resistance, I -V curve and spectrum intensity. The stress induced a luminous flux decay on LED in all experiments and causes a failure. So we try to find out what's a main failure mechanism for a high power LED.

  • We found that saturated water vapor pressure is the most dominant stress factor for the degradation phenomenon in the package for high-power phosphor-converted white light emitting diode (high power LED). Also, we proved that saturated water vapor pressure is effective acceleration stress of LED package degradation from an acceleration life test. Test conditions were $121^{\circ}C$, 100% R.H., and max. 168 h storage with and without 350 mA. The accelerating tests in both conditions cause optical power loss, reduction of spectrum intensity, device leakage current, and thermal resistance in the package. Also, dark brown color and pore induced by hygro-mechanical stress partially contribute to the degradation of LED package. From these results, we have known that the saturated water vapor pressure stress is adequate as the acceleration stress for shortening life test time of LED packages.

  • This study deals with the accelerated life test of high power phosphor converted white Light Emitting Diodes (High power LEDs). Samples were aged at $110^{\circ}C$/85% RH and $130^{\circ}C$/85% RH up to 900 hours under non-biased condition. The stress induced a luminous flux decay on LEDs in all the conditions. Aged devices exhibited modification of package silicon color from white to yellowish brown. The instability of the package contributes to the overall degradation of optical lens and structural degradations such as generating bubbles. The degradation mechanisms of lumen decay and reduction of spectrum intensity were ascribed to hygro-mechanical stress which results in package instabilities.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) processed shot peening which was room temperature, high temperature experiment. And ire got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room, and high temperature at $25^{\circ}C,\;100^{\circ}C,\;150^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}Kth$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and stress intensity (actor range ${\Delta}K$ in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at high temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • Large-sized pins are usually used to lift and handle large low speed diesel engine crankshaft. There has then been a need to reduce and optimize the weight of the traditionally used pins. Making an hole by cutting the inside of the pin out was investigated in view of static and fracture strength. To compensate the stress increase caused by the introduction of the inner hole, the groove in the circumferential direction pre-existing on the pin is to be removed. Finite element analysis was carried out for both the original model and weight reduced model. Stress intensity factors for semi-elliptical defects assumed on the pin for the original model and weight reduced model was calculated using the ASME method and compared with the fracture toughness test result of the pin material. The diameter of the cutting hole for the revised model was determined based on the analysis results.

  • Fatigue tests and numerical analysis were carried out to evaluate the fatigue performance at the U-rib to deck welded joint in steel box girder. Twenty specimens were tested corresponding to different penetration rates (80 and 100%) under fatigue bending load, and the fatigue strength was investigated based on hot spot stress (HSS) method. The detailed stress distribution at U-rib to deck welded joint was analyzed by the finite element method, as well as the stress intensity factor of weld root. The test results show that the specimens with fully penetration rate have longer crack propagation life due to the welding geometry, resulting in higher fatigue failure strength. The classification of FAT-90 is reasonable for evaluating fatigue strength by HSS method. The penetration rate has effect on crack propagation angle near the surface, and the 1-mm stress below weld toe and root approves to be more suitable for fatigue stress assessment, because of its high sensitivity to weld geometry than HSS.

  • The components with the circular cross section have the symmetric combination parts for rotating balance and the crack emanates from the symmetric combination parts. The symmetric cracks from symmetric combination parts make a decrease in the component fatigue life more than single crack. In this study, to estimate the behavior of symmetric cracks, the fatigue test was performed using rotary bending tester on the specimen with a symmetric defects in circular cross section. The material used in this study is Ni-Cr-Mo steel alloy. Under the same stress, the result from the rotary bending fatigue test turned out that the symmetric cracks made a decrease in the fatigue life by 35% more than single crack and the relation between log a and cycle ratio $N/N_f$ obtained linearly.

  • One of the recent issues in design of the spot-welded structure such as the automobile body is to develop an economical prediction method of the fatigue design criterion without additional fatigue test. In this paper, as one of basic investigation for developing such methods, fracture mechanical approach was investigated. First, the Model I, Mode II and Mode III, stress intensity factors were analyzed. Second, strain energy density factor (S) synthetically including them was calculated. And finally, in order to decide the systematic fatigue design criterion by using this strain energy density factor, fatigue data of the ΔP-N(sub)f obtained on the various in-plane bending type spot-welded lap joints were systematically re-arranged in the ΔS-N(sub)f relation. And its utility and reliability were verified by the theory of Weibull probability distribution function. The reliability of the proposed fatigue life prediction value at 10(sup)7 cycles by the strain energy density factor was estimated by 85%. Therefore, it is possible to decide the fatigue design criterion of spot-welded lap joint instead of the ΔP-N(sub)f relation.

  • The shaft with the circular cross section have symmetric structural combination parts to keep the rotating balance. Hence the crack usually emanate from symmetric combination parts due to the stress concentration of these parts. In this study to estimate the fatigue behavior of symmetric cracks, the fatigue test was performed by using rotary bending tester and the specimen with symmetric defects in circular cross section. From the facts the characteristics of crack initiation and propagation on the symmetric surface cracks in circular cross section was examined. Also we observed the internal crack using oxidation coloring and investigated the fatigue behavior using the relationship between surface crack and internal crack. As a result of fatigue lift of symmetric cracks was reduced to 35% compared to single crack’s. We examined the characteristics of fatigue behavior in element with symmetric cracks using internal crack propagation rate and maximum stress intensity factor range obtained from approximation method.

  • This study was conducted to develop the interlayer mixture that absorbs the stress between the old concrete pavement and the asphalt overlay pavement layer. The elasticity, the flexibility, the consistency and the impermeability is required for high-elastic Stress Absorbing Interlayer(HSAI) to absorb and disperse the stress that causes the flexural and horizontal movements of the joint and the crack. The HSAI developed from foreign product was satisfied with the design criteria. The specimens using the HSAI showed the significant reduction of the reflective crack compared those not using the HSAI. The significance included that the life of shear failure and horizontal displacement resistance increased 4 times. The life of the share failure increased to 5 times and the horizontal displacement increased to 9 times according to the selection of surface course material which showed the excellence of the HSAI.
