  • The purpose of this study is the examination of stress levels and the eating habits that are affected by stress, and the provision of basic nutritional education data for the improvement of the eating habits of students who have experienced stress-related nutritional problems. Using the BEPSI-K instruments, a questionnaire survey was administered to 327 student subjects (166 male and 161 female) in the areas of Seoul and Gangwon province. The subjects were classified into 3 groups (low-stress, medium-stress and high-stress), and 59 students (18%) belonged the high-stress group. The BMI readings of the Gangwon province students are significantly higher than those of the Seoul students. The survey results show that the lunch frequency and vegetable intake levels are lower in the high-stress group, whereas the intakes of hot spicy food is higher in this group; they also show that Gangwon province students had eating habits that are relatively undesirable compared with the Seoul students. There are significant differences between the Seoul students and Gangwon porvince students regarding residence type, household economic level, types of leisure activities and level of some stresses. The Gangwon province students ate occasionally breakfast, lunch and snacks, but their midnight snack consumption is relatively frequent compared with the Seoul students. The results of the survey indicate that the BEPSI-K score has a negative correlation with the following variables : sleeping time, economic level of household, degrees of satisfaction regarding appearance and academic achievements, lunch frequency and vegetable intakes. Desirable eating habits are essential for the maintenance of a favorable health status and for the stress-management of university students who need to be a healthy members of society in the near future. To facilitate the formation of desirable eating habits among university students, community-based nutritional assistance and appropriate nutritional education programs should be considered necessary.

  • Purpose: For college students, poor eating habits can cause problems with adult health. This study investigated the status of sweet food intake and the degree of stress in college students in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas to provide a basis for nutrition education by analyzing the relationship between stress and sugar intake. Methods: The subjects were 760 college students, and the survey was conducted using a questionnaire. Statistical analysis for collected data was performed using SPSS (version 21.0). Results: The stress score showed higher stress in female students. Females had more stress in their employment and study-related problems than males. For changes in food intake under stress, the intake was increased greatly in females than in males. For food preference changes before and after stress, males preferred more spicy foods and less salty foods after stress. After stress, females significantly preferred sweeter and spicier foods and less salty, sour, and bitter foods. The intake of sweet foods by stress factors showed that the intake of snacks was higher under the condition of 'worry, fatigue, and tension', and the intake of beverages was increased significantly under the condition of 'anger and aggression'. Conclusion: Sweet foods were preferred under stress, and the amount of intake was increased. Education on food selection and nutrition information should be provided to prevent health problems that can be developed by the reckless intake of sweet foods. Active guidance is needed for college students to select the proper snacks instead of nutritionally insufficient foods to relieve stress.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between stress levels and eating habits in adolescents. Methods: A total of 453 male and female high school students were surveyed to ascertain their stress levels, Nutrition Quotients for Korean Adolescents (NQ-A), and stress-related eating behavior. Results: The average age of the subjects was 18 and they were mostly from nuclear families. Their average daily conversation time with their parents was between 10 to 30 minutes. The average sleep time for female students was observed to be less than that of male students. The satisfaction level of academic achievement of female students was significantly lower than that of the male students (P < 0.001). The average stress level score for female students was 2.7 out of 5, which was significantly higher than the male student's score of 2.4 (P < 0.001). The eating speed of male students was related to stress levels. Both male and female students ate more and craved spicy food when under stress. All male and female students had significantly ascending NQ-A scores rising in the order of stress from 'low level' to 'medium level', to 'high level' (P < 0.001). There was a significant negative correlation between the stress score and the NQ-A score adjusted for general characteristics (r = -0.29, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Since stress and NQ-A were negatively correlated in high school students, higher stress levels can be associated with irregular eating habits and negative eating behavior. Therefore, stress management and nutrition education focusing on stress status are needed for adolescents.

The subject are students enrolled at 'H' university in Asan. There are 801 students who response for this research. We surveyed and analyzed the correlation between the life stress and eating habit of university students. It is analyzed that the objects suffered stress most by 'schooling' and 'job complication.' Surveying the general eating habit of university students, it is found that they do not eat meal regularly, i.e., 'average meals (40.9%)' and 'irregular meal(35.2%).' No significant difference was observed in the regularity of meals between sexes. When it comes to overeating or voracity, male students answered 'sometimes(77.6%)' or 'often(22.5%)', but female students answered 'sometimes(66.2%)' or 'often(28.2%)', which means that female students are more frequent in overeating or voracity. The frequency of eating snack is more than once a day 60.1% in female students and 47.3% in male students, which shows that the rate of female students is much higher than that of male students. Surveying the correlation between stress that male and female university students suffer and the regular meal, we found that both of them tend to eat meal irregularly if they are stressed. Comparing the stress for its factor, male students eat meal irregularly if they are stressed by 'schooling' and female students eat meal irregularly if they are stressed by 'figure.' Checking the correlation between stress and time spent for meal, it is found that while male students eat meal in a hurry when they are stressed by 'job affair', female students do so when they are stressed by 'home economy. Analyzing the correlation between frequency of snack and stress, both male and female tend to eat snack more frequently when they are stressed more. • This study was performed to investigate stress levels, dietary behaviors and food choices, and their correlations in college students. General characteristic stress scores, using a stress test, and the dietary behaviors and food choices of subjects under stress were measured in 358 subjects (185 males and 173 female). The mean total stress scores of the male and female students were $67.91{\pm}44.85$ and $85.62{\pm}48.91$, respectively. Female students were more stressed than males in relation to family, value, future, friends, and study related factors. There were gender differences in the food intake and frequency of eating sweet things when under stress. Stress increased the food intake and frequency of eating sweet things in female students. Especially, stress factors, such as value, economic, future, friends and study problems increased the food intake of female students. Female students preferred sweet tasting items; whereas, male students preferred hot tasting items when under stress. These results show the effect of life stresses on the dietary behaviors and food choices of college students. Stress not only increased energy consumption in certain individuals, but also changed their food choices. Therefore, education with regard to nutrition is necessary if college students are to practice good eating habits for the correct management of life stresses.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of appearance stress and appearance management behavior on job-seeking stress among male university students. Methods: The participants of this cross-sectional and descriptive study were 158 male students attending a university in K Province who completed a self-report structured questionnaire. The survey period was from September 19th to November 9th, 2017. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation and multiple linear regression analyses with the SPSS statistics 23 program. Results: Job-seeking stress showed significant differences according to BMI (F=2.55, p=.042) and pocket money (F=3.08, p=.049). The results of the regression analysis showed that grade (${\beta}=8.93$, p=.008), pocket money (${\beta}=-5.11$, p=.029), appearance stress (${\beta}=.52$, p<.001), and appearance management behavior (${\beta}=.25$, p=.001) were significant factors affecting jog search stress. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that variables such as grade, pocket money, appearance stress, and appearance management behavior significantly explain job-seeking stress among male students in college. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program to reduce job-seeking stress for senior male students who are preparing for employment before graduation. In addition, when organizing a program to reduce job-seeking for male university students, it is necessary to help them have a more positive evaluation of their appearance and pursue proper appearance management behaviors.
