  • A computer software was developed for predictions of fatigue crack initiation life of notched members under variable loadings. The software was constructed based on a new fatigue life prediction method utilizing modified .epsilon.-N curves, which can account for the stress interaction effect. The effect of mean plastic strain on low-cycle fatigue life was also incorporated in the software. The software can be utilized for the first step approximation when fundamental data of material fatigue properties are not available.

  • In case of contact fatigue, the accurate calculation of surface tractions and subsurface stress is essential to the predication of crack initiation life. Surface tractions influencing shear stress amplitude have been obtained by contact analysis based on influence function. Subsurface stress has been obtained by using rectangular patch solutions. In this study, to simulate asperity contact under sliding condition, the tip of asperity was simulated by sphere and to calculate crack initiation life in the substrate, dislocation pileup theory was used.

  • In order to ensure the structural integrity of nuclear welded structures during design life, the fatigue life has to be evaluated by fatigue analysis procedures presented in technical codes such as ASME B&PV Code Section III. However, existing fatigue analysis procedures do not explicitly consider the presence of welded joints. A new fatigue analysis procedure based on a structural stress/fracture mechanics approach has been recently developed in order to reduce conservatism by erasing uncertainty in the analysis procedure. A recent review of fatigue crack growth data under various mean loading conditions using the structural stress/fracture mechanics approach, does not consider the mean loading effect, revealed some significant discrepancies in fatigue crack growth curves according to the mean loading conditions. In this paper, we propose the use of the stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$ characterized with loading ratio R effects in terms of the structural stress. We demonstrate the effectiveness in characterizing fatigue crack growth and S-N behavior using the well-known data. It was identified that the S-N data under high mean loading could be consolidated in a master S-N curve for welded joints.

  • The strength and fatigue life of Satin and Twill-woven CF/epoxy composite(CFRP) have been investigated. Damage mechanism fatigue method has been used to assess fatigue damage accumulation. It is based on measured residual stiffness and residual strength of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) laminates under cyclic loading. Fatigue damage evolution in composite laminates and predict fatigue life of the laminates were simulated by finite element analysis(FEA) method. The stress analysis was carried out in MSC patran/Nastran. A modified Hashin's failure criterion di rmfjapplied to predict the failure of the experimental data of fatigue life but a Ye-delamination criterion was ignored because of 2D modeling. Almost linear stiffness and strength degradation were observed during most of the fatigue process. These stress distribution data were adopted in the simulation to simulate fatigue behavior and estimate life of the laminates. From the results, the predicted fatigue life is more conservatively estimated than the experimental results.

  • Endbeam is an important structural member of freight bogie for the support of service loading. In general, more than 25 years' durability is necessary. However, endbeam occur fatigue fracture in dynamic stress concentration location because comparatively strength and stiffness are low. Therefore, structure analysis is performed to evaluate structural problem of endbeam and local strain range as durability analysis. The number of cycles is extracted concerning the bogie in operation by measurement dynamic stress time history on critical part which is crack initiation in actual fact. At this time rainflow cycle counting is used to consider change of stress for operating condition. Based on the fatigue life curves and the stress analysis, the fatigue life of the endbeam is predicted and compared with the experimentally determined fatigue life, resulting in a fairly good correlation.

  • Biaxial low cycle fatigue test was carried out to predict fatigue life under combined axial-torsional-loading condition which is that of in-phase and out-of-phase for CF8M cast stainless steels. Fatemi-Socie(FS) parameter which is based on critical plane approach is not only one of methods but also the best method that can predict fatigue life under biaxial loading condition. But the result showed that, biaxial fatigue life prediction by using FS parameter with several different parameters for the CF8M cast stainless steels is not conservative but best results. So in this present research, we proposed new fatigue life prediction parameter considering effective shear stress instead of FS parameter which considers the maximum normal stress acting on maximum shear strain and its effectiveness was verified.

  • A Rubber mount is widely used for mechanical parts or engineering materials. Especially, it plays an important role in reducing mechanical vibration due to cyclic loading. But, rubber mount is damaged due to the cyclic loading and resonance. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate evaluation of fatigue life considering vibration characteristics for rubber. In this study, a vibration fatigue analysis was performed and based on Power Spectral Density(PSD) and the stress-life curve and a result of frequency response analysis in the finite element method. The measured load history in experiment was transformed to PSD curve. The stress-life curve was obtained by nonlinear static analysis and fatigue test. In addition, frequency response analysis was conducted for mechanical part. In order to evaluate fatigue life of rubber mount, vibration fatigue test was conducted at the constant acceleration-level as well. Fatigue life was determined when the load capacity is reduced to 60% of its initial value. As a result, predicted fatigue life of rubber mount agreed fairly well with the experimental fatigue life.

  • SM45C steel rods being used generally for power transmission shafts and machine components was selected and welded by Butt-GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding) method. An estimation of fatigue life was studied by constructing S-N curve. Fatigue strength of base metal zone showed higher values than one of weld zone in low cycles between $10^4$ and $10^6$cycles. However, significant decrease in fatigue strength of base metal was found around $10^6$cycles, which were almost same as one of heat affected zone. This decrease was attributed that initial residual stress of the steel rods distributed by drawing process was diminished by continually applied load, and resulted in softening of base metal. The fatigue limit of the weld zone was highest in the boundary between deposited metal zone and heat affected zone, and followed by in the order of deposited metal zone, base metal zone, and heat affected zone. Based on these results, it is revealed that the stress for safety design of machine components using SM45C butt-welded steel rods must be selected within the region of the lowest fatigue limit of heat affected zone.

  • The estimation of fatigue life at the design stage of membrane type LNG tank is very important in order to arrive at feasible and cost effective solutions considering the total lifetime of the tank. In this study, the practical procedure of fatigue life prediction by use of cumulative damage factors based on Miner-Palmgren hypothesis and probability density function has been shown with the corner region of Gaz Transport Membrane type LNG tank being used as an example. In particular the parameters of Weibull distribution that determine the stress spectrum are discussed. The main results obtained from this study are as follows: 1. The recommended value for the shape parameter of Weibull distribution for the LNG tank is 1.1 in case of using the direct calculation method proposed in this study. 2. The calculated fatigue life is influenced by the shape parameter of Weibull distribution and stress block. The safe fatigue design can be achieved by using higher value of shape parameter and the stress blocks divided into more stress blocks.

  • Predicting the failure life of automated manufacturing systems can reduce overall downtime, maintenance costs, and total plant operation costs. Therefore, there is a growing interest in fatigue failure mechanisms as the safety or service life assessment of manufacturing systems becomes an important issue. In particular, fretting fatigue is caused by repeated tangential stresses that are generated by friction during small amplitude oscillatory movements or sliding between two surfaces pressed together in intimate contact. Previous studies in fretting fatigue have observed size effects related to contact width such that a critical contact width exists where there is drastic change in the fretting fatigue life. However, most of them are the two-dimensional finite element analyses based on the plane strain assumption. The purpose of this study is to investigate the contact size effects on the three-dimensional finite element model of a finite width of a flat specimen and a cylindrical pad exposed to fretting fatigue. The contact size effects were analyzed by means of the stress and strain averages at the element integration points of three-dimensional finite element model. This study shows that the fretting fatigue life of manufacturing systems can be predicted by three-dimensional finite element analysis based on SWT critical plane model.
