  • The analysis model is the infinite power law creep material containing the rigid inclusion with crack shape. The present analysis is performed using the complex pseudo-stress function method. The strain rate intensity factor is developed as new fracture mechanics parameter which represents the stress and strain rate distribution near a crack tip in power law creep material. The strain rate intensity factor is developed in terms of Kolosoff stress functions.

  • The performance of several turbulence models in computing an axisymmetric supersonic base flow is investigated. A compressible Navier-Stokes code, which incorporates k-ε, k-ω model and Reynolds stress closure with three kinds of pressure-strain correlation model, has been developed using implicit LU-SGS algorithm with second-order upwind TVD scheme. Numerical computations have been carried out for Herrin and Dutton's base flow. It is observed that the two-equation models give large backward axial velocity approaching to the base and somewhat larger variation of base pressure distribution than the Reynolds stress model. It is also found that the Reynolds stress model with third order pressure-strain model in the anisotropy tensor predicts most accurate mean flow field.

  • The most comprehensive and particularly reliable method for non-destructively measuring the residual stress of the surface layer of metals is the sin2ψ method. When X-rays were used the relationship of εφψ-sin2ψ measured on the surface layer of the processing metal did not show linearity when the sin2ψ method was used. In this case, since the effective penetration depth changes according to the changing direction of the incident X-ray, σφ becomes a sin2ψ function. Since σφ cannot be used as a constant, the relationship in εφψ-sin2ψ cannot be linear. Therefore, in this paper, the orthogonal function method according to Warren's diffraction theory and the basic profile of normal distribution were synthesized, and the X-ray diffraction profile was calculated and reviewed when there was a linear strain (stress) gradient on the surface. When there is a strain gradient, the X-ray diffraction profile becomes asymmetric, and as a result, the peak position, the position of half-maximum, and the centroid position show different values. The difference between the peak position and the centroid position appeared more clearly as the strain (stress) gradient became larger, and the basic profile width was smaller. The weighted average strain enables stress analysis when there is a strain (stress) gradient, based on the strain value corresponding to the centroid position of the diffracted X-rays. At the 1/5 Imax max height of X-ray diffraction, the position where the diffracted X-ray is divided into two by drawing a straight line parallel to the background, corresponds approximately to the centroid position.

  • This is the study on fracture life under the interaction of creep and fatigue. It is difficult to explain the interaction of the creep and fatigue with indication of frequency but the dependency of the time should be considered. The formulation of material varieties causing by interaction of creep and fatigue is required in the accumulative damage method. The strain range partition method requires some of modification corresponding to the changes in temperature and load. All of other method also comprehended with above mentioned problems. Generally, in this field, the variety of stress-strain and suitable parameter is required and connective study between the macro and micro results seems to be insufficient. The linear damage rule is acquiring the support generally but it requires modification in the hgigh temperature instruments. The variety of stress effecting on crack and variety of stress on the metallurgical side are considered to be problems in the future days.

  • Stress concentration mainly occurs near holes and notches. Then local stress is larger than nominal stress. It is necessary that stress concentration phenomena are studied because it can act as a cause of fracture of material. In order to analyze fracture of material including holes, stress concentration factor and stress distribution must be studied more carefully. In this paper the stress concentration and distribution of a slotted plate is examined. Hardened 7:3 brass plate with 4 different slots including a circular hole is used. And ratios of slot length to its root radius are 1, 2, 3, 24, 4. The stress distribution is measured by using strain gages attached to the plate with variable width. And obtained experimental data are adjusted by using calibrated gage factor.

  • This paper presents the stress distribution of the damaged butt joint of steel plate using CFRP laminates when the flange in tension zone of steel box girder is welded by butt welding. When CFRP sheets are patched on tension flange of steel-box girder, the stress distribution of a vertical and normal direction on damaged welding part is shown as parameters such as a variation of the thickness of adhesive, the overlap length with steel, and the modulus of elasticity of CFRP sheets. For the study, we wrote the computer program using the EAS(Enhanced assumed strain) finite element method for plane strain that has a very fast convergency and exact stress for distorted shape.

  • A knowledge of the resdual stress distribution at circumferential weldments can normally increase the accuracy of a fracture assessment in pipe line. In this paper, we present the measurements about the residual stress distributions at three kinds of circumferential butt welded pipes using the holl drilling strain gage method. By this experiment, we have obtined the following characteristics. At the inner surface of the pipe region near the center line of welding is under high tensile residual stress. However, as the distance from the center line of welding increases, the tensile component decreases and finally becomes compressive residual stress at region far away from the center line of welding. The longitudinal residual stress at the outer surface is compressive regardless of the diameter of pipe and the circumferential stress is changed from compressive to tensile as pipe diameter increases. The results also demonstrate that the residual stress is mainly caused by self-restraint bending force in the pipe welding.

  • There exists a certain functional relation between Vickers hardness and flow stress in the strain-hardened material. Using this relation, the Vickers hardness values in the strain-hardened material can be converted into the flow stress values in good approximation. Therefore, the information about the flow stress distribution in the material can be easily acquired through a forming experiment. That makes it possible to simulate the process state for a critical moment of cold forging under the given boundary conditions very quickly without calculating the foregoing history of the actual deformation from the beginning.

  • The application of friction stir welding (FSW) technology has been extended to all industries, including shipbuilding. A heat transfer analysis evaluates the weldability of a welded work piece, and elasto-plastic analysis predicts the residual stress and deformation after welding. A thermal elasto-plastic analysis based on the heat transfer analysis results is most frequently used today. However, its application to large objects such as offshore structures and hulls is impractical owing to its long computational time. This paper proposes a new method, namely an equivalent strain method using the inherent strain, to overcome the disadvantages of the extended analysis time. In the present study, a residual stress analysis of FSW was performed using this equivalent strain method. Additionally, in order to reflect the external constraints in FSW, the reaction force was predicted using a neural network, Finally, the approach was verified by comparing the experimental results and thermal elasto-plastic analysis results for the calculated residual stress distribution.

  • This study investigates the ductility capacity of slender-wide reinforced concrete walls under predominant flexural moment loading. The experimental work for this study aims to provide design guidelines for bar detailing in critical regions under compressive stress in particular in case of slender-wide RC walls. According to the experimental observation the Bernoulli hypothesis of linear strain distribution is no longer valid and the ultimate compressive strain of concrete is significantly reduced, It is postulated that the nonlinear strain distribution causes the concentrated compressive stressed region and hence the premature crushing failure at the toe of walls. The reduced ultimate strain and nonlinear strain distribution need transverse reinforcement for confinement and more realistic models for the strength and displacement estimation of slender-wide RC wall.
