Plastics have brought a significant progress in reducing the weight of automotive parts and improving gas emissions by replacing steel parts. The front end module (FEM) carrier, which was made from long glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP-LFT), is one of the most successful examples. On the other hand, more research on the fatigue behavior and vibration durability of automotive plastic parts will be needed to improve the long-term reliability. This paper analyzed the durability of the PP-LFT, which is fundamental to fatigue design and analysis of FEM carrier. Various fatigue tests were conducted at different stress ratios to evaluate the relationship between the fatigue life and stress amplitude or mean stress level. In the case of a fixed stress amplitude, the change in fatigue life with the stress ratio was 2~6% larger than the case of fixed maximum stress. Furthermore, this study observed the mechanism of initiation and propagation of the fatigue cracks in PP-LFT by scanning electron microscopy.
Anisotropy of stiffness, from extremely small strains to post-failure strains, of isotropically consolidated air-pluviated sands in plane strain compression was studied by using the newly developed instrumentation fur small strain measurements, Seven types of sand of world-wide origins were tested, which have been extensively used for research purposes. Stress-strain relationships for a wide range of strain from about 0.0001% to the peak were obtained by measuring axial and lateral strains locally free from the effects of bedding and membrane penetration errors at the specimen boundaries. The result showed that the relationship between the principal stress ratio and the principal strain increment ratio was constant, being rarely affected by the over-consolidation ratio and the confining pressure. Although in the small strain the anisotropy hardly affected the relationship between the principal stress ratio and the principal strain increment ratio, the K value around the peak varied according to the $\delta$ value. In general, Rowe\`s stress-dilatancy equation works fairly well from the small strain to the peak.

In this study, centrifugal model tests were performed to evaluate the stress sharing between SCP and surrounding clayey soil at composite ground improved by sand compaction pile with the low area replacement ratio. The SCPs were formed by the "frozen pile" method and pressure cells were installed on pile and surrounding clayey soil to observe stress sharing characteristics. As a result of centrifugal tests, it is shown that the value of stress concentration ratio is mainly affected by area replacement ratio, loading condition and elapsed time.
This paper describes the effect of specimen size on fatigue crack growth rate for the offshore structural high-tensile-strength steel BS4360 and machine structural steel SM45C. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of stress ratio aspect ratio specimen width and specimen thickness of the fatigue crack growth behavior. Compact tension specimens with a LT orientation for BS4360 and SM45C steels were used, All testing was done at constant stress intensity factor range controlled fatigue crack growth condition. The investigation demonstrates that the fatigue crack growth rate is increased with increasing stress ratio and specimen thickness and is decreased with increasing specimen width. The fatigue crack growth rate is unaffected by aspect ratio until a/W=0.50 but is increased by increasing spect ratio from a/W=0.55.
Redistribution of residual stress and its effects during fatigue crack propagates from tensile residual stress region in weldment are investigated. Tests are performed by using welded CCT specimens of structual rolling steel (SS400) and it makes fatigue crack propagate from tensile residual stress region. For this study tension-tension loading type is selected by external loading condition and magnetizing stress indicator is used correctly to measure redistribution of residual stress according to fatigue crack growth and number of loading cycles. From this result, it is proved that redistribution of residual stress is mainly consist of residual stress released by fatigue crack growth. When fatigue crack propagates from tensile residual stress region residual stress are redistributed and it makes fatigue crack growth rate largely increase. Fatigue crack growth rate is low in case of redistributed residual stress compare with initial distributed residual stress.

Nanoindentation has been widely used for evaluating mechanical properties of nano-devices, from MEMS to packaging modules. Residual stress is also estimated from indentation tests, especially the Knoop indenter which is used for the determination of residual stress directionality. According to previous researches, the ratio of the two stress conversion factors of Knoop indentation is a constant at approximately 0.34. However, the ratio is supported by insufficient quantitative analyses, and only a few experimental results with indentation depth variation. Hence, a barrier for in-field application exists. In this research, the ratio of two conversion factors with variation in indentation depth using finite elements method has been attempted at. The magnitudes of each conversion factors were computed at uniaxial stress state from the modelled theoretical Knoop indenter and specimen. A model to estimate two stress conversion factor of the long and short axis of Knoop indenter at various indentation depths is proposed and analyzed.
A lot of twin tunnels were modelled with different pillar widths, rock mass classes and stress ratios in order to consider various site conditions, and the stabilities of the pillars were estimated by numerical analyses and scaled model tests. The strength-stress ratios of the pillar were obtained from three different methods which were using the stresses appeared at the middle point, the whole average and the left/right edges of the pillar. The strength-stress ratio of the pillar edges showed relatively conservative values among them, and it was also practically consistent with the tunnel excavating steps comprising the construction sequence analyses which included the partial excavation and the support system. Scaled model tests were also performed to investigate the tunnel stability, where it was found that cracks were progressively generated from the pillar edges toward the middle point of the pillar. Therefore, in order to both prevent the local damage of pillar and conservatively estimate the tunnel stability, it was thought to be an appropriate method using the strength-stress ratio obtained from the left/right edges of the pillar.
Sand compaction pile (SCP)-improved ground is composite soil which consists of the SCP and the surrounding soft soil. When a surcharge load is applied to composite ground, time-dependent behaviors occur in the composite soil due to consolidation according to radial flow toward the SCP. In addition, stress transfer also takes place between the SCP and the soft soil. This paper presents the numerical results of cylindrical composite ground that was conducted to investigate smear effect on consolidation behaviors of SCP-improved ground. The results showed that the smeared zone of soft clay had a significant effect on effective stress-pore water pressure response, stress transfer mechanism and stress concentration ratio of composite ground. Amount of stress transfer between the clay and the SCP was maximum in depth of z/H=0.25, and decreased with depth. Stress concentration ratio of composite ground was not constant, but depended on consolidation process. It was also found that the value of stress concentration ratio in soft clay with smeared zone was larger than that in soft clay without smeared zone.
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the relations between the unbonded tendon stress and the influential parameters which were bonded reinforcement ratio, span/depth ratio, and loading type. To this end, first, the influence of parameters were examined with twenty eight test results obtained from references. Then, an experimental study was carried out with 21 test specimens. The investigation with previous and current tests revealed the followings; (1) The bonded reinforcement ratio and prestressing ratio were proved to be an important variables on the unbonded tendon stress. (2) The ratio of span to depth and type of loading affected partially the unbonded tendon stress although their effects varied depending on bonded reinforcement ratio. (3) AASHTO LRFD Code and Moon/Lim\`s design equation predicted the test results well with some safety margins.

The fatigue crack growth behavior of the SA516/60 steel which is used for pressure vessels was examined experimentally at room temperature $25^{\circ}C, -30^{\circ}C, -60^{\circ}C, -80^{\circ}C, -100^{\circ}C$ and -l2$0^{\circ}C$ with stress ratio of R=0.05, 0.1 and 0.3. Fatigue crack propagation rate da/dN related with stress intensity factor range ΔK was influenced by stress ratio in stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) with an increase in ΔK. The resistance of fatigue crack growth at low temperature is higher compared with that at room temperature, which is attributed to the extent of plasticity-induced by compressive residual stress according to the cyclic loads. Fractographic examinations reveal that the differences of the fatigue crack growth characteristics between room and low temperatures are mainly explained by the crack closure and the strengthening due to the plasticity induced and roughness induced.
