Suggesting Coping Strategies for the Various Stresses from Body Weight in Korean Males -A Qualitative Approach-

  • This study investigates coping strategies of overweight or underweight males in Korea. For this purpose, the authors identify types of stress related to weight management. A qualitative method was utilized to collect the data related to successful weight management experiences of males aged 20-37 years. Data were analyzed based on a motivation theory of coping, which suggests coping strategy elements. The results of this study identified the stress related to weight: dissatisfaction with appearance, others' disapproval of appearance, health problems, weaker athletic ability, negative self-perception, passiveness about appearance, lower romantic attractiveness, others' disapproval of lower romantic attractiveness, weakened task execution capability, and negative stereo-types about task execution capability. In addition, six coping strategies were suggested: improved appearance, improved physical function, improved positive self-perception, more choices to improve appearance, enhanced romantic relationship, and enhanced job performance. This study shows that weight problems in modern society are diverse and complex. Therefore a man who has abnormal weight needs to clarify his stress first and then proposes strategies that are appropriate for each type of stress.

학령기 아동의 대응 유형에 관한 연구 : Q방법론적 접근 (A Study on Types of Coping in School-Age Children : A Q-methodological Approach)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of Q-sorting and to develope a typology of coping to stress in school-age children through the use of Q-methodology. For the study, Q-statements are selected from the literature and interviews of 30 Children, A total number 153 statement were collected and 31 Q-samples were finally selected. AP-sample of 76 was selected the elementary school children. Each of respondents were given 31 coping strategies questionnaire and set of 31 statements with cartoon on each of cards and sorted them according to the 9-point scale. The result of the C-sorting by each subject were coded and analyzed using the QUANAL PC and SPSS PC+ program. As a result of the analysis, There were significant relationship between score each item of question naire and score of sorted statement. Therefore, school-age children was able to Q-sorting(forced normal distribution). Also, the four types of coping were named as follows : Type I (n=35) : To search for the dynamic behaviors Type II (n=12) : To search for the intellectual behaviors Type III (n=22) : To search for emotional-spiritual behaviors Type IV (n=7) : To search for the self-abuse behaviors Throught the study, the implication for teachers, parents and school nurses is that there is needed to guide and to support adaptive coping behaviors. Also, it is recommended that the application of Q-methodology for study of children's subjective concepts like stress and coping.

일부 고등학생의 스트레스와 구강건강 관련 연구 (Correlation between stress and oral health in some high school students)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation between stress and oral health in some high school students. Methods: The subjects were 224 students from three high schools in Daejeon, Daecheon, and Incheon. from November to December, 2015. A self-reported questionnaire was filled out from November to December, 2015. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, awareness toward stress, stress-coping pattern, oral health-related quality of life and oral health care. Data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. Results: In the analysis of academic stress level by the general characteristics and stress level, higher stress group showed higher experience in stress expectation(high group 16.43, subgroup 9.21), internal stress(high group 13.97, subgroup 6.16), expression type stress(high 10.06, sub-4.95). The higher stress group had emotional stress management in stress-coping pattern and less experience in difficulty of tooth brushing, chewing discomfort, and oral health-related quality of life management(p<0.001). Conclusions: The stress had a negative impact on the oral health related quality of life. The high school students should be able to manage the physical and mental stress. It is necessary to provide the continuous oral health care management against the stress by the dental hygienists.

한국 초등학생들의 스트레스 대응 행동에 영향을 미치는 요인 (Factors Influencing Stress Coping Behaviors of Elementary Students in Korea)

  • 목적: 본 연구는 한국 초등학생의 스트레스 대응행동에 관련된 요인들을 알아보기 위한 서술적 조사연구이다. 방법: 연구대상자는 세 개 지역(대도시, 중소도시, 농촌지역)의 10개 초등학교에서 자발적으로 참여한 5, 6학년 1,161명으로 자가보고식으로 설문이 이루어졌다. 스트레스 대응 행동은 수정된 Ways of Coping Checklist를 이용하여 측정되었다. 자료는 기술적 통계, t-test, ANOVA, 상관관계 분석, 다중회귀분석을 사용하여 분석되었다. 결과: 초등학생들이 가장 빈번하게 사용하는 스트레스 대응 행동은 신비적 대응($3.01{\pm}10.6$)이었고 긍정적 대응($2.61{\pm}0.72$)과 부정적 대응($2.01{\pm}0.72$)이 그 뒤를 이었다. 대도시에 사는 여학생이 중소도시나 농촌지역에 사는 남학생들보다 더 많은 대응 행동을 사용하였고, 신비적 대응행동이 높은 학업성적과 관련이 있었던 반면 긍정적 대응행동은 높은 삶의 만족도와 관련이 있었다. 결론: 초등학생의 성별, 삶의 만족도 수준, 지역, 학업성적과 스트레스 수준이 스트레스 대응 행동에 영향을 주었다. 또한 대응 행동의 종류에 따라 대응행동에 영향을 주는 요인들에 다소 차이를 보였다. 초등학생들이 직면하는 스트레스 상황에 대해 긍정적으로 대응할 수 있는 능력을 길러주기 위하여 대상자의 특성과 지역의 사회적, 물리적 환경을 고려한 중재프로그램 개발이 필요하다.

대학생의 흡연 유형 및 흡연과 심리사회적 요인의 관계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Types of Smoking and the Relationship of Psychosocial Factors to Smoking of College Students)

  • For the purpose of examining the relationship between smoking, perceived stress and vulnerability factors, and furthermore suggesting interventions to reduce excessive smoking and prevent nicotine dependency effectively, the questionnaires of perceived stress(stressful experiences), ways of stress coping(passive and active copings), smoking motives, social influence, age, amounts of smoking, and nicotine dependency were administered to smokers among medical students in Chosun university(n=186). 1) As a result of classifying smokers by the types of smoking, the most was a type of smokers to reduce negative emotions and the next in order were addictive smokers, smoker for stimulation, smoker for pleasure, etc. 2) The effects of motive, age, and active coping style were significant, but the effects of perceived stress, passive coping style, and social influence were not significant in average amount of daily smoking. 3) The effects of motive, social influence, and age were significant, but the effects of perceived stress, passive and active coping styles were not significant in the degree of nicotine dependency. To summarize, it is concluded that there were a lot of people who smoke to solve negative emotions, but the direct effects of perceived stress and passive coping style on both average amounts of daily smoking and the degree of nicotine dependency were not significant. On the other hand, motive, age, active coping style, and social influence were proved to be more important variables than the others in explaining college students' smoking.

간호대학 실습생들의 성격/행동유형과 임상실습 스트레스 양상 및 대처 방식간의 관계 (Levels of Clinical Practice Stress and Coping Strategies according to Nursing Students' Personality/Behavior Types)

  • Purpose: This study was performed to identify levels of clinical practice stress and coping strategies according to the personality/behavior types of nursing students. Methods: The subjects of this study were 143 third- and fourth-grade nursing students in 14 nursing colleges who had experienced clinical practice. The questionnaire consisted of instruments to identify Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness (DISC) personality/behavior types, clinical stress, and stress coping strategies. The data were analyzed using Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, descriptive statistics, and ANOVA, using the SPSS 24.0 program. Results: The DISC pattern showed high priority in Steadiness (48.3%), followed by Conscientiousness (21.0%), Influence (16.1%), and Dominance (14.7%), in that order. The steadiness type showed the lowest level of stress among four patterns. Conclusion: This study found that the personality/behavior types of nursing students differ. Additionally, different personality/behavior types can be attributed to stress levels and stress coping behaviors. Based on these results, different personality and behavior types of nursing students should be considered to manage their stress levels related to the clinical practicum experience.

대학생의 대학생활 스트레스와 대처방식, 자아존중감, 부적응적 완벽주의가 자살생각에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Campus Life Stress, Stress Coping Type, Self-esteem, and Maladjustment Perfectionism on Suicide Ideation among College Students)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 남녀 대학생을 대상으로 사회인구학적 특성과 대학생활 스트레스, 스트레스 대처방식, 자아존중감, 부적응적 완벽주의가 자살생각에 미치는 영향을 규명함으로써 대학생의 자살예방정책 마련을 위한 시사점을 제공하는데 있다. 부산경남지역 대학생 350명을 대상으로 자기기입식 설문조사방법으로 자료를 수집하여 실증 분석하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 자살생각은 사회인구학적 특성 중 대학생활 만족도에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보였다. 즉, 대학생활만족도가 낮은 그룹에서 자살생각이 강했다. 둘째, 제변수들의 상관관계를 분석한 결과, 자살생각은 자아존중감, 대학생활 만족도, 적극적 스트레스 대처방법인 문제중심 스트레스 대처방식 순으로 뚜렷한 역의 상관관계를 보이고 있고 반면에, 부적응적 완벽주의, 대학생활 스트레스, 소극적 스트레스 대처인 정서중심 스트레스 대처방식 순으로는 뚜렷한 정의 상관관계를 보였다. 즉 자아존중감이 높을수록, 대학생활 만족도가 높을수록, 문제중심 스트레스 대처방식을 사용할수록 자살생각이 낮아지고, 부적응적 완벽주의가 높을수록, 대학생활 스트레스가 높을수록, 정서중심 스트레스 대처방식을 사용할수록 자살생각이 높아지는 것으로 분석된다. 셋째, 연구 대상자의 자살생각에 영향을 미치는 요인을 규명하기 위한 회귀 분석의 결과, 부적응적 완벽주의, 대인관계 스트레스, 남학생, 정서중심 스트레스 대처방식 순으로 유의한 정의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 자아존중감은 유의한 역의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 자아존중감의 영향이 가장 컸다. 즉, 부적응적 완벽주의가 높을수록, 대인관계 스트레스가 높을수록, 여학생보다 남학생에서, 정서중심 스트레스 대처방식을 사용할수록 자살생각이 높아지고, 자아존중감이 높을수록 자살생각은 낮아지는 것으로 분석된다. 이상의 결과를 종합하면, 대학생활만족도를 높이기 위한 노력이 대학생의 자살생각을 완화시키는 효과가 있으며, 대학생의 자살예방을 위해서는 대인관계 기술 향상과 스트레스 대처방식의 개선, 부적응적 완벽주의 성향의 완화, 그리고 자아존중감 강화를 위한 교육 및 훈련이 필요함을 시사한다. 특히 대학생의 자아존중감 향상을 위한 다각적인 방안의 모색이 중요하다고 판단된다.

비만 중.고등학생의 스트레스와 대처방법에 관한 연구 (Study on the Obese Students' Stress and Coping Method in Middle and High Schools)

  • This study attempted to identify obese students' stress and coping method in middle and high schools. The data were collected from the total of 600 obese students from middle and high schools in Pusan. The author used a convenience sampling method. The data collection was done from March 2 to April 30. 2001. The analysis of the data was done with SPSS Win(10.0) for descriptive statistics. t-test. and ANOVA. The instrument used for the obese students' stress and coping method was a questionnaire developed by Kim. Yi-Soon and Kim. Young-Hae(200l). The tool was composed of 65 items (33stress items: 32coping method items) with the five-point Likert scale. The results were as follow: 1. The average score of stress was 2.49 (SD = .86) points in the male students. and 2.83(SD= .86) points in the female students. The subcategories were: (outward appearance), (boyfriend/girlfriend), (occurrence of an outbreak of a disease), (relationship within the family), (an obese appearance), (difficulty in exercise). The highest degree of stress came from 'an obese appearance' for the male students (mean=2.64. SD=0.87) and (mean=2.64. SD=0.87) for the female students. 2. The subcategories of the coping method were: (be concerned about other matters), (recreation activities), (self-violence), (relaxation), (hobby activities), (avoid a situation), (communication), (music), (negative behavior), (positive thinking). The highest degree of coping method were (recreation activities) in the male students (mean=3.07. SD=0.86) and (music) in the female students (mean=3.47. SD=1.01). 3. The results comparing stress with demographic variables were significant for gender (t=7.010. p=0.000). grades at school (F=2.918. p=0.02l), degree of obesity (F=5.205. p=0.006). grades (F=2.550. p=0.027). standard of living(F=8.277. p=0.000). the state of health (F=2.882, p=0.022), relationship with the father (F=4.790, p=0.001), relationship with the mother (F=6.080, p=0.000), and the educational level of the father (F=3.192, p=0.013). 4. The results comparing the coping method with demographic variables were significant for gender (t=4.597. p=0.000). These findings contribute to the understanding of the degree of stress and the type of coping methods of obese students in middle and high schools. Therefore, the result of this study aids in an effective nursing intervention to improve the mental health program for the obese.

  • 본 연구는 대학생들에게 MBTI성격유형검사를 실시하여 성격유형별 스트레스 대처방식이 학업소진에 어떤 영향을 미치는가를 연구하였다. 연구결과 성격유형은 스트레스 대처방식 및 학업소진과 밀접한 관련이 있음을 나타내고 있다. 스트레스 대처방식 중 문제중심적 스트레스 대처방식은 EP, IJ성격유형에서 부정적인 영향을 미치는 반면 소망적사고 및 정서중심적 스트레스 대처방식은 EP성격유형에서 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 상담자는 스트레스를 받은 내담자가 안정적인 상태에서 긍정적인 상상이나 기도 등을 통해 스트레스를 대처해 나갈 수 있도록 유도할 필요가 있다.

중년기 직장남성의 생활스트레스 및 대처행동이 심리적 복지감에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of Life Stresses and Coping Behavior of the Middle-Aged Working Men on Their Psychological Well-Being)

  • The study is to investigate how much middle-aged male worker's life stress affect their psychological well-being. The subject group was 223 male workers aged from 40 to 59 with a wife and children. The results are as follows: 1) the middle-aged male workers perceive an economic life stress as a most stressful problem, and mostly use a 'direct-positive' coping behavior(CB) type to settle the stress among 4 stress CB types. 2) Economic life and marital stress, 'indirect-active' and 'direct-active' CB give deep effects on their life satisfaction. 3) The effecting factors on their depression are work stress, marital stress, health stress, a 'direct-passive', an 'indirect-active', an 'indirect-passive' CB and their income. In order to increase their life satisfaction and to decrease their depression, concludingly, it is most significant for them to have a strong marital relationship and actively cope with life stress.
