The aim of this study was to isolate microorganisms from half milk samples of dairy goats by California mastitis test (CMT) during the lactation period and to further investigate the susceptibility of isolated organisms to antimicrobial drugs. From a total of 235 half milk samples with CMT scores of 2 or above from 366 dairy goats distributed throughout Jeonnam province, microorganisms were isolated from 198 (83.5%) samples either singly (99.0%) or in combination (1.0%). The most prevalent microorganism was the coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp., (44.4%, n=88) followed by Staphylococcus aureus (24.2%, n=48), Escherichia coli (11.1%, n=22) and Streptococcus spp. (7.6%, n=15). Isolated bacteria also included Bacillus spp. (2.5%, n=5), Pseudomonas spp. (2.5%, n=5), Micrococcus spp. (1.5%, n=3), Corynebacterium spp. (1.5%, n=3), Enterococcus facium (1.0%, n=2), Morganella morganii (0.5%, n=1) and Streptococcus agalactiae (0.5%, n=1). During the summer season, a high prevalence of all microorganisms were observed in which Staphylococcus spp. (30.8%), Escherichia coli (8.6%), and Streptococcus spp. (5.6%) were among the most prevalent bacteria isolated. Staphylococcus spp. was also shown to be high in the winter (21.7%). In most samples, the presence of bacterial pathogens in goat milk led to the increase in the total somatic cell count (SCC). Most of the half milk samples of dairy goats with bacterial contamination showed SCC of ${\geq}1{\times}10^6cells/ml$ (90.4%). Minor pathogens (11.4%) were more detected from milk samples with SCC of < $1{\times}10^6cells/ml$ than major pathogens (4.1%), while the major pathogens tended to be higher from samples with SCC of ${\geq}3{\times}10^6cells/ml$. Susceptibility of these bacteria to 12 antimicrobial agents was tested by the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Results indicated that more than 90% of bacteria isolated from CMT 2+ dairy goat half milk samples were susceptible to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, amoxicillin/clavulanic, enrofloxacin and cephalothin while they were resistant to tetracycline (44.7%).
Streptococcus is one of the major pathogen groups inducing bovine mastitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial resistance patterns of Streptococcus species isolated from bovine mastitis milk samples in Korea from 2016 to 2021. In total, 181 (10.3%) Streptococcal isolates were collected from 1,761 quarter milk samples at 122 farms; S. uberis 39.2% (n=71), S. dysgalactiae 29.3% (n=53), S. equinus 9.9% (n=18), S. suis 6.1% (n=11), S. parauberis 4.4% (n=8), S. lutetiensis 3.9% (n=7), others 7.2% (n=13). However, S. agalactiae was not isolated. The isolates showed the highest resistance rate to tetracycline (55.2%) followed by erythromycin (45.3%) and pirlimycin (36.5%). In contrast, all isolates were susceptible to ceftiofur, cephalothin, penicillin/novobiocin, and only single S. equinus isolate was resistant to both ampicillin and penicillin. Of 181 isolates, 64 (35.4%) were multidrug resistance (MDR). The resistance to pirlimycin of S. uberis (73.2%) was much higher than that of other species (0~36.4%). All S. suis isolates were resistance to tetracycline. S. dysgalactiae showed lower resistance to erythromycin, pirlimycin and tetracycline than S. uberis and S. suis. The rate of MDR was relatively higher among S. uberis (73.2%) than among S. suis (36.4%), S. dysgalactiae (15.1%), others (0%). In conclusion, antimicrobial resistance in Streptococcus spp. should be regularly examined for appropriate therapies because the resistance patterns were various among the individual species.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the microbiological and cellular milk profile for the diagnosis of subclinical mastitis in female buffaloes and to assess risk factors for predisposition of the disease. Methods: Analyses were carried out by standard plate count (SPC), identification of species and antibiotic resistance, somatic cell count (SCC), electrical electrical conductivity of milk (ECM), and lactoferrin content in milk. Teat cups were swabbed to evaluate risk factors, observing hyperkeratosis, milking vacuum pressure and cleanliness of the site. Hence, 30 female buffaloes were randomly selected (15 from a group in early lactation and 15 in late lactation). Results: The most common bacteria in the microbiological examination were Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and Corynebacterium sp. In the antibiotic sensitivity test, 10 (58.82%) of the 17 antibiotics tested were sensitive to all isolates, and resistant bacteria were Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Streptococcus haemolyticus, and Escherichia coli. It was observed that positive samples in the microbiological examination showed total bacterial count between $9.10{\times}10^3$ to $6.94{\times}10^6$ colony forming units/mL, SCC between 42,000 to 4,320,000 cells/mL and ECM ranging from 1.85 to 7.40 mS/cm. It was also found that the teat cups had high microbial counts indicating poor hygiene, and even faults in the cleanliness of the animals' waiting room were observed. It is concluded that values of SCC above 537,000 cells/mL and ECM above 3.0 mS/mL are indications of mammary gland infection for this herd; however, the association of these values with a microbiological analysis is necessary to more accurately evaluate the health status of mammary glands with subclinical mastitis. Conclusion: Through phenotypic characterization of bacteria involved in the samples, the genera Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Corynebacterimum bovis were the most prevalent in this study. Faults in environment and equipment hygienization are factors that are directly associated with mastitis.

Microbiological characteristics of gamma irradiated low salt squid Jeot-gal were examined. Following the fermentation periods, total bacterial cell, Lactobacillus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Pseudomonas spp. and yeast cell number were counted on their selective media and some acid forming bacteria and Pseudomonas spp. were identified. As the gamma irradiation dose increased, the microbial density of early fermentation phase was reduced and the growth rate was delayed. The repression effects on microbiological growth by gamma irradiation were to be higher as salt concentration increased. Adequate conditions of salt concentration and gamma irradiation for low-salt squid Jeot-gal preparation were 10% and 10 kGy, respectively. Lactobacillus sp. 2, Micrococcus varians and Streptococcus sp. I were isolated from 5% salt containing squid Jeot-gal, and Micrococcus morrhuae was from 20% only while Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus brevis were widespread. Lactobacillus brevis, Pediococcus halophilus and Pseudomonas diminuta were sensitive and Lactobacillus plantarum, Micrococcus morrhuae and Pseudomonas sp. 3 were resistant to gamma irradiation. The diversity of microflora decreased as salt concentration decreased and gamma irradiation dose increased.
Attempts were made to isolate and identify Gram-positive or lactic acid bacteria in Kimchi fermentation. Species diversity depended on isolation media and temperatures, and diversity tended to be reduced with decrease of temperature. MRS and KM (natural medium prepared from Kimchi materials) were suitable respectively for isolation and present number of species. Identification of isolates was performed by dichotomous identification schemes arranged on the basis of Bergey's manual of Systematic Bacteriology (1986). Gram-positive bacteria isolated at different temperatures (5, 15, $25^{\circ}C$) were 5 species of Leuconostoc, 4 species of Streptococcus, 3 species of Pediococcus, 2 species of Bacillus and 18 species of Lactobacillus. Species with high frequency of appearance were Lactobacillus plantarum, Streptococcus raffinolactis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides at $25^{\circ}C$, L. plantarum, Lactobacillus fructosus, L. mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides at $15^{\circ}C$ and L. mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides, Leuconosotoc paramesenteroides, Lactobacillus maltaromicus at $15^{\circ}C$. In general, Kimchi fermentation was achieved by Lactobacillus spp. (59.7% frequency) at $25^{\circ}C$ and Leuconostoc spp. (65.2% frequency) at $5^{\circ}C$. Pediococcus cerevisiae and Streptococcus faecalis which have been so far known as bacteria of Kimchi fermentation were not isolated.
Microorganisms were isolated and identified from bovine 296 quarters which showed positive reaction by California Mastitis Test (CMT) in 40 farms of Jeju from September 1999 to June 2000. The organisms associated with the mastitis of bovine were 11 different bacterial species in this study. Which of them, Staphylococcus aureus was the most predominant species as 152 (51.4%) isolates. Other identified species included 49 (16.5%) coliform, 47 (15.8%) Streptococcus dysgalactiae, 15 (5.1%) Bacillus spp., 8 (2.7%) Staphylococcus epidermidis, 6 (2.1%) Streptococcus agalactiae, 5 (1.7%) Enterococcus faecalis, 5 (1.7%) Corynebacterium spp., 3 (1.0%) Streptococcus uberis, 1 (0.3%) Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 1 (0.3%) Pasteurella haemolytica. Almost of all the islolated beacterial species showed high sensitivity against kanamycin (98.6%), cephalothin (98.0%), streptomycin (94.9%), gentamicin (94.6%), ampicillin (92.2%) and polymyxin B (90.2%). On the contrary, they showed resistance against penicillin (47.0%), tetracycline (37.2%), cefazolin (26.0%), bacitracin (22.6%) and erythromycin (19.9%). Eighty-one isolates were not resistant to any antibiotics and 215 drug resistant isolates showed 89 different drug resistance patterns from single to nine multiple antibiotics resistance patterns.
Combinations of EDTA-Tris and gentamicin, oxytetracycline in normal bovine milk were examined for synergistic activities aganist Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Corynebacterium Pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Salmonella dublin, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and proteus spp. isolated from the milk of acute clinical bovine mastitis. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of EDTA-Tris and gentamicin, oxytetracycline on Escherichia coli, Salmonella dublin, proteus spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus agalactiae were markedly reduced. 2. The significant synergistic effects observed when the microorganisms were reacted with EDTA-Tris and gentamicin, oxytetracycline. These findings were respectively verified by kinetic studies of microbial death, using one-fourth minimal inhibitory concentrations of EDTA-Tris, gentamicin, and oxytetracycline.
Pathological and bacteriological studies were made of a total of 111 udders from slaughtered Korean native cows originating from various locations in Chonnam province. Incidence of supernumerary teats was 8.1%. Gross lesions were found in 21.4% of mucous membranes of total teat cisterns; these lesions comprised epithelial hyperplasia (12.6%), congestion (4.1%), slight fibrosis (3.8%) and severe fibrosis with congestion (0.9%). Gross lesions in the glandular tissues were found in 35.1% of cows; these lesions comprised slight fibrosis (27.9%), moderate fibrosis (6.3%) and severe fibrosis with pus (0.9%). Mastitis was found only in one cow. One hundred and twenty-five strains of microorganisms were isolated from mammary gland fragments of the cows. Pathogens most commonly isolated were Staphylococcus spp.; most of them were minor mammary pathogens. Major mammary pathogens were Streptococcus spp. (9.6%) and E. coli (2.4%). Most of the isolates were susceptible to many of 13 antimicrobial agents used, but Streptococcus spp. and Gram-negative rods showed resistance to 7 and 8 agents, respectively. 97.5% of the isolates showed susceptibility to amoxicillin, but only 55.8% to erythromycin.
This study was conducted to determine the microorganisms inhabitating in sow genital organs and their anti-microbial drug susceptibility During the period between February, 1991 and November 1991, 128 sow genital organs were sampled at six abattoirs. Gross pathological examination and bacterial isolation and identification were performed from the genital organ. In addition, antimicrobial drug susceptibility for the major organisms isolated were examined. 1. Among the bateria isolated from normal genital organs, E. coli(30.7%) Stahylococcus spp.(29.4%), Corynebarterium pyogenes(C. pyogenes) (14.7%), Streptococcus spp.(13.3%) were most freqently isolated, whereas the genera of Klebsiella, Actinobacillus, and Serratia were detected less freqently. 2. Among the bacteria isolated from abnormal genital organs, C. pyogenes,(37.7%), Stahylococcus spp.(30.2%), Proteus spp. (26.4%) , Pasteurella spp. (18.9%) , Steptococcus spp. (9.4%) were most freqently isolated whereas the genera of Pseudomonas, Serratia and Klebsiella were detected less freqently. 3. From sow genital organs showing lesion of endometritis and purulent endometritis C. pyogenes were most freqently isolated, the isolation rate being 67.7% and followed by Stahylococcus spp., E. coli, Proteus spp., Steptococcus spp. and Pasteurella spp. in the order. 4. Antimicrobial drug susceptibility of the major organisms showed that all the isolates were susceptible to cephalothin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol and sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim, but resistant to penicillin and streptomycin.
