Structural behavior of steel beams strengthened with CFRP strips and cables

  • In the present study, structural behavior of steel beams strengthened with CFRP strips and cables was investigated by a series of experiments. For this purpose, two groups of experimental studies were carried out: one for the beam series strengthened only with CFRP strips and the other for the steel beam series strengthened with CFRP strips and prestressed wires. From this test, it is found that the flexural stiffness and strength of the steel beams strengthened with CFRP strips and cables were significantly improved comparing to the un-strengthened one. Three failure modes such as sudden de-bonding, splitting and rupturing of CFRP strips were observed. The ultimate tensile strains of attached CFRP strips on the steel beams were noticed in the range between 8,000με and 11,000με, and this result disclose the perfect composite reaction CFRP strips and steel beams.

  • Strengthening of reinforced concrete beams with externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer plates/sheets technique has become widespread in the last two decades. Although a great deal of research has been conducted on simply supported RC beams, a few studies have been carried out on continuous beams strengthened with FRP composites. This paper presents a simple uniaxial nonlinear analytical model that is able to accurately estimate the load carrying capacity and the behaviour of damaged RC continuous beams flexural strengthened with externally bonded prestressed composite plates on both of the upper and lower fibers, taking into account the thermal load. The model is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility requirements in and all parts of the strengthened beam, i.e., the damaged concrete beam, the FRP plate and the adhesive layer. The flexural analysis results and analytical predictions for the prestressed composite strengthened damaged RC continuous beams were compared and showed very good agreement in terms of the debonding load, yield load, and ultimate load. The use of composite materials increased the ultimate load capacity compared with the non strengthened beams. The major objective of the current model is to help engineers' model FRP strengthened RC continuous beams in a simple manner. Finally, this research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behaviour of the interface and design of the FRP-damaged RC hybrid structures.

Axial behavior of RC column strengthened with SM-CFST

  • This paper aims to investigate the axial compressive behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with self-compacting and micro-expanding (SM) concrete-filled steel tubes (SM-CFSTs). Nine specimens were tested in total under the local axial compression. The test parameters included steel tube thickness, filling concrete strength, filling concrete type and initial axial preloading. The test results demonstrated that the initial stiffness, ultimate bearing capacity and ductility of original RC columns were improved after being strengthened by SM-CFSTs. The ultimate bearing capacity of the SM-CFST strengthened RC columns was significantly enhanced with the increase of steel tube thickness. The initial stiffness and ultimate bearing capacity of the SM-CFST strengthened RC columns were slightly enhanced with the increase of filling concrete strength. However, the effect of filling concrete type and initial axial preloading of the SM-CFST strengthened RC columns were negligible. Three equations for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of the SM-CFST strengthened RC columns were compared, and the modified equation based on Chinese code (GB 50936-2014) was more precise.

  • In this paper, the Mohr-Coulomb criterion was adopted to predict the bonding failure load of the reinforced concrete beams strengthened by the externally bonded steel plates. Based on this criterion, a nonlinear analysis program of APSB(Analysis Program for Strengthened Beams) and nonlinear finite element analysis program of RCSD-SB (Reinforced Concrete Structural Design - Strengthened Beams) were developed. Numerical results were then compared with experimental results and good agreements were obtained.

  • A theoretical model for flexural behavior of strengthened reinforced concrete beam is developed based on displacement controlled nonlinear finite element method in this study. The developed model is shown to reasonably reproducing the experimental results of variously strengthened reinforced concrete beam. Parametric studies for the strengthened reinforced concrete beam at different loading stages are then performed using this model in order to assess the effect of loading stages at the time of strengthening on characteristic values of strengthened beam under flexure. It was found that depending on loading stages of a beam, deflections at yielding and at ultimate loads are more influenced than corresponding load capacities.

  • Flexural test and parametric study by FEM analysis on 6.0m long reinforced concrete beams strengthened by GFRP are reported in these tests. The selected variables are strengthened plate length, plate thickness. The effects of these variables are discussed. The results generally indicate that the flexural strength of strengthened beams is increased. The results of FEM analysis show that the more strengthening GFRP is the more stress of GFRP is decrease when failure mode is peeling failure.

  • In this study, strengthening effect of the deteriorated reinforced concrete T type bridge with epoxy-bonded glass fiber reinforced plates(GFRP) is experimentally investigated. This test make a comparison between before strengthened and after strengthened with GFRP structural behavior experimentally in the field. the results generally indicate that the flexural strength of strengthened RC T-type bridge is increased.

Seismic Performance Evaluation of Non-Seismic Reinforced Concrete Buildings Strengthened by Perimeter Steel Moment Frame (철골 모멘트골조로 보강된 철근콘크리트 건물의 내진성능 평가)

  • This paper is to investigate the retrofitting effect for a non-seismic reinforced concrete frame strengthened by perimeter steel moment frames with indirect integrity, which ameliorates the problems of the direct integrity method. To achieve this, first, full-scale tests were conducted to address the structural behavior of a two-story non-seismic reinforced concrete frame and a strengthened frame. The non-seismic frame showed a maximum strength of 185 kN because the flexural-shear failure at the bottom end of columns on the first floor was governed, and shear cracks were concentrated at the beam-column joints on the second floor. The strengthened frame possessed a maximum strength of 338 kN, which is more than 1.8 times that of the non-seismic specimen. A considerable decrease in the quantity of cracks for the strengthened frame was observed compared with the non-seismic frame, while there was the obvious appearance of the failure pattern due to the shear crack. The lateral-resisting capacity for the non-seismic bare frame and the strengthened frame may be determined per the specified shear strength of the reinforced columns in accordance with the distance to a critical section. The effective depth of the column may be referred to as the longitudinal length from the border between the column and the foundation. Flexural bearing capacity and stiffness research on CFRP sheet strengthened existing reinforced concrete poles with corroded connectors

  • In mountainous areas of China, concrete poles with connectors are widely employed in power transmission due to its convenience of manufacture and transportation. The bearing capacity of the poles must have degenerated over time, and most of the steel connectors have been corroded. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) offers a durable, light-weight alternative in strengthening those poles that have served for many years. In this paper, the bearing capacity and failure mechanism of CFRP sheet strengthened existing reinforced concrete poles with corrosion steel connectors were investigated. Four poles were selected to conduct flexural capacity test. Two poles were strengthened by single-layer longitudinal CFRP sheet, one pole was strengthened by double-layer longitudinal CFRP sheets and the last specimen was not strengthened. Results indicate that the failure is mainly bond failure between concrete and the external CFRP sheet, and the specimens fail in a brittle pattern. The cross-sectional strains of specimens approximately follow the plane section assumption in the early stage of loading, but the strain in the tensile zone no longer conforms to this assumption when the load approaches the failure load. Also, bearing capacity and stiffness of the strengthened specimens are much larger than those without CFRP sheet. The bearing capacity, initial stiffness and elastic-plastic stiffness of specimen strengthened by double-layer CFRP are larger than those strengthened by single-layer CFRP. Weighting the cost-effective effect, it is more economical and reasonable to strengthen with single-layer CFRP sheet. The results can provide a reference to the same type of poles for strengthening design.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with high-performance carbon fiber bars. Specimens designed with the conventional retrofitting method were also tested to compare load-carrying capacity and ductility. As the results, specimens strengthened with high-performance carbon fiber bars showed much higher load-carrying capacity and ductility compared to specimens strengthened with a steel plate and carbon fiber sheets. The failure mechanism of the specimen strengthened with a high-performance carbon fiber bar was bond-slip, whereas that of the others were interface debonding or rip-off.
