  • The addition of a limestone filler(LF) to fill into the voids between cement and aggregate particles can reduce the cementitious paste volume. This paper aim to evaluate the influence of LF contents on the hydration kinetics and compressive strength. Hydration kinetics were evaluate using heat of hydration, ignition loss and thermal analysis. The heat of hydration was measured using Isothermal Calorimetry. The degree of hydration was measured using ignition loss. Hydration product analysis was carried out by Thermal Gravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis. The results show that the addition of LF reduces not only the initial setting time and heat of hydration peak, also degree of hydration and rate of strength development at early age increase with the addition of LF. It can be concluded the LF fills the pore between cement particles due to formation of carboaluminate, which may accelerate the setting of cement pastes.

  • Low carbon energy demand in South Korea is increasing, hence leading to an increasing usage of wood pellets and the amount of its combustion by-product called wood pellet fly ash (WA). In an effort to develop recycling technology, this research investigates the use of WA as a new sustainable binder for backfill soil materials. The influence of WA on weathered granite soils (WS) is investigated by mixing 5%, 15%, and 25% of WA dosage, compacted at optimum moisture content, then cured for 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. After curing, the compacted specimens were investigated through unconfined compressive tests, pH tests, total suction tests, and microstructural analysis. The findings suggest that the higher the dosage rate, the higher strength and modulus. Additionally, the alkali ions of WA aid in the cementation of WS particles, and newly cementitious minerals are confirmed after 28 curing days. The refinement of pore microstructures led to a denser WS matrix and stiffness improvements. The results validate the binding potential of wood pellet fly ash on weathered granite soils in terms of strength, modulus, and microstructures.

  • In an effort to find alternate, environment friendly and sustainable building materials, the scope of possible utilization of iron slag (I-sand), generated as a by-product in iron and steel industries, as fine aggregates in reinforced cement concrete (RCC) made with manufactured sand (M-sand) is examined in this manuscript. Systematic investigations of the physical, mechanical, microstructural and durability properties of I-sand in comparison with RCC made with M-sand have been carried out on various mix designs prepared by the partial/full replacement of I-sand in M-sand. The experimental results clearly indicate the possibility of utilizing iron slag for preparing RCC in constructions without compromising on the property of concrete, durability and performance. This provides an alternate possibility for the effective utilization of industrial waste, which is normally disposed by delivering to landfills, in building materials which can reduce the adverse environmental effects caused by indiscriminate sand mining being carried out to meet the growing demands from construction industry and also provide an economically viable alternative by reducing the cost of concrete production.

  • The purpose of this work is to develop of a press forming process for mobile phone battery cover as an alternative to the current manufacturing process by laser welding. This press forming process consists of a combination of bending, side pressing and side bending operations. The dimensional error for each process was investigated by finite element(FE) analysis and the Taguchi optimization method. The spreading of the cover width in the side pressing process was adjusted by modifying the blank shape with a notch. The over-bending method was adopted to compensate the spring-back which occurs after bending. Forming experiments were performed to verify the reliability of the developed press forming process. In addition, the strength of the product was evaluated to verify the suitability of the battery cover manufactured with this new press forming process. The results of the forming experiments indicate that the dimensional accuracy of the battery cover is within the required tolerance. The strength of the battery cover was evaluated to 547N which is larger than required strength of 400N.

  • Heating pipes burst was occurred in the apartment complex that was applied floor radiant heating system. There were two opinions for the cause of the bursted heating pipes that was the flaw during construction and defects in the product and also there were conflicting among them. Officials analyzed it in order to investigate the cause of the rupture. Tensile test results showed different tensile strength between the lower part of heating pipe and the upper part of heating pipes. The lower tensile strength is maintained while the top was not secured. The reason why rupture heating pipes is that flow velocity isn't secured and then the air get stagnant. Stagnant air makes hardening. It is caused rupturing. The proper flow rate was confirmed 0.166 m/sec after experiment. It isn't make stagnant air inside heating pipes.

  • The use of the coal ash for surcharge material, in a view of the environmental aspect, can decrease amount of the reclamation through recycling waste materials as well as prevent a destruction of the ecosystem attributed to sand picking. In addition, it can reduce both unit cost of material and construction expenses. In this study, new construction material as alternative surcharge material using coal ash, which is by-product from thermoelectric power plant, were developed. Mixing ratios of fly ash and bottom ash derived from the coal ash in Samchunpo thermoelectric power plants were determined. Furthermore, mixing conditions depending on the ratios of the cement and gypsum used for chemical additive were determined too. Uniaxial compression strength tests were conducted at different mixing conditions and Design graph of optimum mixing ratio at each required strength for economic efficiency is indicated in this paper.

  • The most important things for the production of recycled aggregates are saving energy, suppressing the generation of by-product fine particles and sustaining the performance of concrete. As solutions, this study proposes this technology of improving the performance of recycled aggregates through forced carbonation.1) It is to stimulate and carbonate the bond paste part that causes the deterioration of recycled aggregates. Particularly, the purpose of this technology is to fill and chemically stabilize pores inside the bond paste, further improving the quality of recycled aggregates with a decreased absorption rate and an enhanced aggregate strength. Ultimately, it is possible to obtain a carbonation model, depending on the paste ratio and particle-size distribution of recycled aggregates. Moreover, by calculating the optimum carbonation period through the verification of this carbonation model, it is possible to examine how much the strength is improved by the reformation of recycled aggregated.

  • Recently, for industrial development period, concrete structures in domestics have been increased. They were deteriorated by attack of carbonation, freeze-thaw and corrosion etc. In hence they were demolished and reconstructed, resulted in waste concrete particles. In this paper, waste concrete particles (WCP) by product from different crushing and selecting process were used in soil cement-based pavement in the various recycling. For using WCP in soil cement-based pavement, the Qualities, physical and chemical properties, of WCP should be researched. In the first step, the specified compressive strength of mortar for two types of clay sand soil and clay soil respectively was experimented to be 15 Mpa and then optimum mixing ratio of chemical solidification agent were decided in the range of $1.5\~3.0\%$ in the replacement with cement weight content. In the second step, based on the prior experimental results, recycling possibility of WCP in soil cement-based pavement was studied. In the result of experiment the mixing ratio of WCP were 5, 10, 15 and $20\%$ in the replacement with soil weight and the compressive strength of mortar was somewhat decreased according to the increase of the mixing ratio of WCP.

  • Wood fibers for medium density fiberboard (MDF) was used in the filler layer of the white duplex board for increasing thickness and bulk of the board. The MDF fibers were treated with ozone (3% based on dry weight of the fibers), and mixed together with OCC (old corrugated container) to form paper. Ozone-treated MDF fibers gave high bulk, high tensile strength, high internal bond and fast drainage to the furnish mixed with OCC. It was shown that there were possibilities to reduced basis weight of the filler layer without loss of thickness, stiffness, and tensile strength. Furthermore, it showed the possibility to develop a new kind of board product that has high stiffness as well as high strength properties with light basis weight by application of the ozone-treated MDF fibers.

  • The amount of the waste foundry sand(WFS) produced in Korea is over 700,000 ton per year, but most WFS buries itself and only 5~6% or total WFS is recycled in the way or mixing as fine aggregate for construction materials. A bY-product, WFS produced from a foundry may affect our environmental contamination if it is discharged without proper waste disposal in Korea. Therefore in this study, we performed the fundamental research about specific gravity, absorption, grading curve, finesse modulus of WFS, different aggregates and the flow and the compressive strength of mortar with WFS replaced as fine aggregate, the workability and compressive strength of concrete with WFS as fine aggregate aimed at the specified strength of 270 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and then optimum mix proportion of concrete was determined
