  • Currently media consumption over fixed/mobile Internet is mostly conducted by adaptive media streaming technology such as DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP), which is an ISO/IEC MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) standard, or some other technologies similar to DASH. All these heavily depend on the HTTP caches that ISPs (Internet Service Providers) are obliged to provide sufficiently to make sure fast enough Web services. As a result, as the number of media streaming users increases, ISPs' burden for HTTP cache has been greatly increased rather than CDN (Content Delivery Network) providers' server burden. Hence ISPs charge traffic cost to CDN providers to compensate for the increased cost of HTTP caches. Recently in order to reduce the traffic cost of CDN providers, P2P (Peer-to-Peer)-assisted DASH system was proposed and a peer selection algorithm that maximally reduces CDN provides' traffic cost was investigated for this system. This algorithm, however, tends to concentrate the burden upon the selected peer. This paper proposes a new peer selection algorithm that distributes the burden among multiple peers while maintaining the proper reduction level of the CDN providers' cost. Through implementation of the new algorithm in a Web-based media streaming system using WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) standard APIs, it demonstrates its effectiveness with experimental results.

  • This paper intends to examine the recent acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Walt Disney Co. in terms of how information communication technology, especially the internet, has been reshaping the media industry. In particular, it looks at the deal as Disney's attempt to adapt to the rapidly shifting media environment and strike back at the challenges from online streaming services. After looking at the overview of the deal and some of the major changes and challenges the rise of streaming services has brought to film and media landscape, the paper looks at Disney responded to them by launching its own streaming services and how its acquisition of Fox assets factors in this. It also examines the implications of Disney's move as well as the opportunity and challenges it faces.

  • Recently, as the proliferation of mobile smart devices, multimedia content sharing technologies between mobile smart devices have provided. For efficient content sharing in wireless networks, the hierarchical streaming network has been proposed. However, member devices in a network group experience frequent delay while playing multimedia content files because of excessive network resource occupation between a relay and member devices. In this paper, we propose an efficient multimedia streaming relay method using media buffer control to reduce network congestion during streaming from the relay device to the member devices. We also measured the number of buffering and buffering time of the proposed relay engine and compared them with the performance of the existing relay engine.

  • In this paper, we propose a group playback synchronization method using adaptive synchronization delay time by the bit rate of media to synchronize a play position of streaming media between mobile smart devices. This method consists of streaming server-side and client-side synchronization algorithms based on synchronization delay time which includes connection time, control packet transmission time, streaming data buffering time, and synchronization processing time. We implement the Android media player application with synchronization support using the proposed algorithms and present the result of performance evaluation.

  • To provide high-quality media streaming service over the best-effort Internet, a streaming methodology is required to response to the dynamic fluctuation of underlying networks. In this paper, we implement the MPEG-4 streaming system with adaptive transport based on priorities of media packets. The implemented system is composed of the common MPEG-4 streaming components such as elementary stream provider, sync and DMIF layer, and adaptive transport module including data prioritization and FEC control. More specifically, the prioritized sync layer packets (based on object level) are delivered to the transport module and then are encoded by an adaptive FEC encoder to help reliable transport. The FEC combination is dynamically adjusted by the feedback information from the receiver. In addition, low priority packets are selectively dropped to meet the limitation of available bandwidth. The experimental results over the emulation-based testbed show that the Proposed system can mitigate the impact of network fluctuation and thus improve the quality of streaming.

  • This paper presents a novel 360-degree video streaming system for large-scale immersive displays and its ongoing implementation. Recent VR systems aim to provide a service for a single viewer on HMD. However, the proposed 360-degree video streaming system enables multiple viewers to explore immersive contents on a large-scale immersive display. The proposed 360-degree video streaming system is being developed in 3 research phases, with the final goal of providing 6DoF. Currently, the phase 1: implementation of the 3DoF 360-degree video streaming system prototype is finished. The implemented prototype employs subpicture-based viewport-dependent streaming technique, and it achieved bit-rate saving of about 80% and decoding speed up of 543% compared to the conventional viewport-independent streaming technique. Additionally, this paper demonstrated the implemented prototype on UCSB AlloSphere, the large-scale instrument for immersive media art exhibition.

  • Recently, there is a rapidly growing demand for efficient real-tine playback and transmission of large amounts of multimedia data. But most users' connections are not fast enough to download large chunks of multimedia data. Therefore a streaming technology is needed in which users enable the real-time playback of multimedia date without having to download the whole of the multimedia date. In this paper, we propose a personalized IP streaming system. The proposed IP streaming system enables users to got an intelligent recommendation of multimedia contents based on the user preference information stored on the streaming server or the home media server. Moreover, users are assured of seamless access of streamed content event if they switch to another client device by implementing streaming system based on user identification and device information. We evaluate our approach with simulation results.

  • Recently, the W3C has developed the HTML 5 standard to provide various multimedia services as well as a web based streaming. HTML5 based web browsers with the built-in video codecs can be used directly for streaming services, though previous web browsers should contain playback plug-in for streaming services. In addition, an adaptive streaming technology using HTTP/TCP has been standardized, since an Internet firewall does not support RTP/UDP streaming protocol but HTTP/TCP streaming protocol. In this paper, we propose the service migration mechanism among various devices in the HTML5-based adaptive HTTP streaming environments. The proposed algorithm and architecture were modeled for migrating media flows, media flow control, and session control and implemented using JavaScript. Finally, we showed that the proposed mechanism was effective to migrate HTTP streaming service among various devices by performing several experiments.

  • In this paper we propose several mapping schemes for streaming video generated by state-of-the-art H.264 codec over IEEE 802.11e enabled wireless LANs. The schemes take advantage of both 802.11e's QoS mechanism and some novel features of the H.264 codec, so as to protect the most important information in terms of visual quality and reduce distortion under network congestion. The proposed methods are evaluated by means of the H.264 reference software codec, network simulation, and objective video quality measurements. Results show that the proposed methods achieve a robust and error resilient H.264 video streaming over wireless LANs than traditional best-effort streaming.
