  • In this study, the characteristics of nonpoint pollutant outflow and contribution rate of pollution in Songya-stream mainstream and tributaries were analyzed. Further, water pollution management and improvement measures for pollution-oriented rivers were proposed. An on-site investigation was conducted to determine the inflow of major pollutants into the basin, and it was found that pollutants generated from agricultural land and livestock facilities flowed into the river, resulting in a high concentration of turbid water. Based on the analysis results of the pollution load data calculated through actual measurement monitoring (flow and water quality) and the occurrence and emission load data calculated using the national pollution source survey data, the S3 and S6 were selected as the concerned pollution tributaries in the Songya-stream basin. Results of cluster analysis using Pearson correlation coefficient evaluation and Density based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) technique showed that the S3 and S6 were most consistent with the C2 cluster (a cluster of Songya-stream mainstream owned area) corresponding to the mainstream of Songya-stream. The analysis results of the major pollutants in the concerned pollution tributaries showed that livestock and land pollutants were the major pollutants. Consequently, optimal management techniques such as fertilizer management, water gate management in paddy, vegetated filter strip and livestock manure public treatment were proposed to reduce livestock and land pollutants.

  • To understand the role of helical geometry on the regression rate enhancement, two competing underlying mechanisms such as turbulence enhancement and swirling motion production were studied by numerical calculations. Experimental results showed that the enhancement of heat transfer rate has the very close relation to the increase in regression rate even though the percentage of increase in heat transfer rate is different from that in regression rate. This discrepancy is presumably due to the change of turbulent flow feature caused by so-called "blowing mass flux" from the fuel surface. In this regard, the results of RANS calculation show that the blowing velocity is responsible for the reduction of the swirl generation and the increase in the turbulent kinetic energy. And the dominancy of one of the mechanisms causes the increase in the regression rate. Meanwhile, the increase in turbulent kinetic energy due to the mixing of blowing flow and free stream flow does not contribute for the enhancement of the heat transfer rate to the surface because the blowing flow pushes boundary layer away from the solid surface.

Abstract Nowadays, many multimedia applications for the Internet are introduced as the network gets faster and many techniques manipulating multimedia data are developed. These multimedia applications, however, do not spread widely and are not fast as expected at their introduction time due to the poor quality of image and voice delivered at receivers. The poor quality is mainly attributed to that the current Internet can not carry data as fast and reliably as the real-time applications require. To improve the quality without modifying the internal structure of the current Internet, many researches are conducted. One of them is an end-to-end flow control of multicast traffic adapting the sending rate to the dynamically varying Internet state. This paper proposes two flow-control techniques which can improve the performance of the two conventional techniques; IVS and RLM. IVS statically adjusts the sending rate based on the network state periodically estimated. Differently from IVS in which a sender produces one single data stream, in RLM a sender transmits several data streams generated by the layered coding scheme and each receiver selects some data streams based on its own network state. The more data streams a receiver receives, the better quality of image or voice the receiver can produce. The two techniques, however, can degrade the performance since IVS increases its sending rate statically and RLM accepts one more data stream at arbitrary time regardless of the network state respectively. We introduce two new techniques called TCP-like IVS and Adaptive RLM; TCP-like IVS can determine the sending rate dynamically and Adaptive RLM can select the right time to add one more data stream. Our simulation experiments show that two techniques can achieve better utilization and less packet loss by 10-20% over various network topologies.

  • Up-flow multi-layer bioreactor (UMBR) is a hybrid system using dual sludge that consists of an up-flow multi-layer bioreactor as anaerobic/anoxic suspended growth microorganisms followed by an aeration tank. The UMBR acts as a primary settling tank, anaerobic/anoxic reactor, thickener which requires low energy due to mixing by up-flow stream. This study focused on using a pilot UMBR plant with capacity of 20-30 $m^3$/day for domestic wastewater in HCMC. HRTs of UMBR and aeration tank were 4.8 h and 7.2 h, respectively. The average MLSS of UMBR ranged from 10,000-13,600 mg/l SS. Internal recycle rate and sludge return were 200-300% and 150-200%, respectively. The results obtained from this study at flow rate of 20 $m^3$/day showed that removal of COD, SS, TKN, N-$NH_4$, T-N, and color were 91%, 87%, 86%, 80%, 91% and 91%, respectively.

  • In this study, the effect of hole geometry of the cooling system on the flow and temperature field was numerically calculated. The finite volume method was employed to discretize the governing equation based on the non-orthogonal coordinate with non-staggered variable arrangement. The standard k-.epsilon. turbulence model was used and also the predicted results were compared with the experimental data to validate numerical modeling. The predicted results showed good agreement in all cases. To analyze the effect of the discharge coefficient for slots of different length to width, the inlet chamfering and radiusing holes were considered. The discharge coefficient was increased with increment of the chamfering ratio, radiusing ratio and slot length to width and also the effect of radiusing showed better result than chamfering in all cases. In order to analyze the difference between the predicted results with plenum region and without plenum region, the velocity profiles of jet exit region for a various flow conditions were calculated. The normal velocity components of jet exit showed big difference for the low slot length to width and high blowing rate cases. To analyze the flow phenomena injected from a row of inclined holes in a real turbine blade, three dimensional flow and temperature distribution of the region including plenum, hole and cross stream with flow conditions were numerically calculated. The results have shown three-dimensional flow characteristics, such as the development of counter rotating vortices, jetting effect and low momentum region within the hole in addition to counter rotating vortex structure in the cross stream.

  • This study introduces a transient analysis module developed for RAST-V and validates it using the Kalinin-3 benchmark problem. For the benchmark analysis, RAST-V standalone and STREAM/RAST-V calculations were performed. STREAM supplies the few-group constants and RAST-V conducts a 3D core simulation utilizing few-group cross-sectional data. To improve accuracy, the main solver was developed based on the advanced semi-analytic nodal method. To evaluate the computational capability of the transient analysis module in RAST-V, Kalinin-3 benchmark is employed. Kalinin-3 represents a coolant transient benchmark that offers experimental data during the deactivation of the Main Circulation Pumps. Consequently, the transient calculations reflected the changes in the reactor flow rate. Benchmark comprising steady-state and transient calculations. During the steady state, the STREAM/RAST-V combination demonstrated a 30 ppm root mean square difference from 0 to 128.50 EFPD. For the transient calculations, STREAM/RAST-V showed power differences within ±7 % over a range of 0-300 s. Axial offset differences were within ±3 %, and the RMS difference in radial power ranged within 2.596 % at both 0 and 300 s. Overall, this study effectively demonstrated the newly developed transient solver in RAST-V and validated it using the Kalinin-3 benchmark problem.

  • This study was conducted to clarify runoff production processes in forested catchment through hydrograph separation using three-component mixing model based on the End Member Mixing Analysis (EMMA) model. The study area is located in the coniferous-forested experimental catchment, Gwangneung Gyeonggido near Seoul, Korea (N 37 45', E 127 09'). This catchment is covered by Pinus Korainensis and Abies holophylla planted at stocking rate of 3,000 trees $ha^{-1}$ in 1976. Thinning and pruning were carried out two times in the spring of 1996 and 2004 respectively. We monitored 8 successive events during the periods from June 15 to September 15, 2005. Throughfall, soil water and groundwater were sampled by the bulk sampler. Stream water was sampled every 2-hour through ISCO automatic sampler for 48 hours. The geochemical tracers were determined in the result of principal components analysis. The concentrations of $SO_4{^{2-}$ and $Na^+$ for stream water almost were distributed within the bivariate plot of the end members; throughfall, soil water and groundwater. Average contributions of throughfall, soil water and groundwater on producing stream flow for 8 events were 17%, 25% and 58% respectively. The amount of antecedent precipitation (AAP) plays an important role in determining which end members prevail during the event. It was found that ground water contributed more to produce storm runoff in the event of a small AAP compared with the event of a large AAP. On the other hand, rain water showed opposite tendency to ground water. Rain water in storm runoff may be produced by saturation overland flow occurring in the areas where soil moisture content is near saturation. AAP controls the producing mechanism for storm runoff whether surface or subsurface flow prevails.

  • A phytoplankton cultivation system was installed and operated for removal of nutrients from stream water polluted by nonpoint source pollution. The system was a continuous-flow culture comprising a phytoplankton tank that received inflow from a storage reservoir. When the system was operated as a batch culture for the purpose of determining hydraulic retention time (HRT), the proper HRT value was three days, and the removal rate of TP and TN averaged 70% and 44%, respectively. When the system was operated with the continuous flow from a stream for 45 days, 53.9% of TP and 53.1% of TN were removed as sludge. Due to active growth of phytoplankton, pH and dissolved oxygen in the phytoplankton tank were extremely high, reaching 10.8 and 16mg $L^{-1}$, respectively. It was concluded that nutrients can be effectively removed from polluted stream waters by cultivating phytoplankton.

  • There is a big difference of discharge rate between drought and flood period in Korea since the importance of water resources management has come to the fore. To know a river characteristics, it needs to estimate river discharge accurately. River discharge is calculated using the measured velocity of cross section and the estimated area of watercourse as input parameters into continuity equation. Generally, flow rate over a river is estimated from the relation equation between level and discharge, in this case, there are weakness for only the equal depths and the equal discharge estimated. In the present study, therefore, water surface slope was estimated using measured water level of Seongseo water level observation station and measured water level using ADVM at Gangchang Bridge. And then, we developed the discharge calculation equation using water surface slope. A method to easily calculated flow rate from the measured depth of the two points that are suggested by reflecting water surface slope because natural stream is unsteady flow, not uniform flow or not steady flow.
