Biological control activity of Acremonium strictum BCP, a mycoparasite on Botrytis cinerea, was examined against six plant diseases such as rice blast, rice sheath blight, cucumber gray mold, tomato late blight, wheat leaf rust, and barley powdery mildew in growth chambers. The spore suspension of strain BCP showed strong control activities against five plant diseases except against wheat leaf rust. On the other hand, the culture filtrate of A. strictum BCP was effective in controlling only cucumber gray mold and barley powdery mildew. Further in vivo biocontrol activities of A. strictum BCP against tomato gray mold were investigated under greenhouse conditions. Control efficacy of the fungus on tomato gray mold increased in a concentration-dependent manner. Treatment of more than $1{\times}10^6$ spores/ml significantly controlled the disease both in tomato seedlings and in adult plants. The high disease control activity was obtained from protective application of the strain BCP, whereas the curative application did not control the disease. Foliar infections of B. cinerea were controlled with $1{\times}10^8$ spores/ml of A. strictum BCP applied up to 7 days before inoculation. In a commercial greenhouse, application of A. strictum BCP exhibited the similar control efficacy with fungicide procymidone (recommended rate, $500{\mu}g/ml$) against strawberry gray mold. These results indicate that A. strictum BCP could be developed as a biofungicide for Botrytis diseases under greenhouse conditions.
The strawberry cultivar Hokowase showing rapid wilting and death around harvest time was first found in the fold at Woongcheon, Chungnam province in 1974. The fungus, Fusarium oxysporum was isolated frequently from the crown, petiole and root of strawberry plants collected from Woongcheon and was pathogenic to Hokowase. The fungus abundantly produced micro-and macro-conidia and chiamydospore on PSA. The size of micro conidia, macro conidia and Chlamydospores was $5.0\~13.0\times2.5\~3.0,\;12.8\~62.5\times2.5\times50\mu\;and\;7.5\~13.8\times5.5\~12.5\mu$, respectively. Mycelial growth of the fungus was best between $25\~30^{\circ}C$ on PSA. The disease at Woongcheon occurred from the end of March and incidence of the disease increased from the beginning of May reaching $40.2\%$ of diseased Plants at the 1st part of June. In laboratory and field evaluation tests with twelve fungicides, Difolatan, Benlate T and Tospin M showed some control effects against the disease although they did not show ignificant differences in effects compared with that of the non-treatment. The cultivar Yachiyo, Daehak 1, Line 10-2, and Senga Sengana were highly resistant, and Harunoka and Empire were moderate resistant whereas Northwest and Hokowase were highly susceptible to the fungus under field condition.

The use of a microorganism, or its secretions, to prevent plant disease offers an attractive alternative or supplement to synthetic fungicides for the management of plant disease without the negative effects of chemical control mechanisms. During a screening for microorganisms with the potential to be used as microbial fungicides, Bacillus sp. BS061 was isolated from a plant leaf. The strain BS061 potently inhibited the mycelial growth of Botrytis cinerea, and significantly reduced disease incidence of powdery mildew in cucumber and strawberry. We also found that the culture filtrate of BS061 inhibited the mycelial growth of various plant pathogens.
Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae (Fof) is the most important diseases of a strawberry field in Korea. We surveyed phylogenetic analysis, pathogenicity test, and fungicide response about Fof isolates isolated from Korea. Twenty-seven isolates of F. oxysporum isolated from strawberry plants were conducted in this study. Specific amplification by Fof specific primer was confirmed in all 26 isolates except Fo080701 isolate. The nuclear ribosomal intergenic spacer region and the translation elongation factor EF-lα gene sequences of isolates revealed three main lineages. Most of all isolates were contained DNA lineage group 1, but 2 and 3 group was shown only one and three isolates, respectively. All isolates were shown in pathogenicity with cv. Seolhyang. The EC50 mean values of prochloraz ranged 0.02-0.1 ㎍/ml except for Fo080701 and effectively inhibited mycelial growth at low concentrations. The EC50 value of metconazole was also 0.04-0.22 ㎍/ml, showing a similar inhibitory effect to that of prochloraz. The EC50 value of pyraclostrobin was 0.23-168.01 ㎍/ml, which was different according to the strain. In the field trial, boscalid+fludioxonil, fluxapyroxad+pyraclostrobin, and prochloraz manganese were selected as the effective fungicides for controlling Fusarium wilt.
Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae (Fof), the causal agent of crown and root rot in strawberry, is the most serious soilborne disease of nursery plants in Korea. The possibility of infection by Fof through runner propagation from infected mother plants of strawberry cv. 'Kumhyang' was assessed in stolons and daughter plants hanging from raised beds. The number of daughter plants from an infected mother plant in plastic house and photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) system, 280 ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ was 2.7 and 3.8 plants after 58 days, respectively. However, healthy mother plants produced 6.5 and 8.4 daughter plants, respectively. The pathogen was detected in the uppermost portion of the stolon after 58 days, but was not detected further down the stolon. After 90 days, it was detected in all portions of the stolon between mother and $1^{st}$ daughter plant and in 60% of all $1^{st}$ daughter plants. The pathogen was not detected in the corresponding portions of the non-infected controls. These results show that infected mother plants can transmit Fof to their daughter plants without passing through the soil and $1^{st}$ daughter was used as mother plant in PPF system for propagating healthy plants.

Strawberry is an out-crossed crop that is relatively sensitive to inbreeding, and as a result, most of breeding programmes in strawberry have been based on selection breeding where elite parents are selected from intercrossing. Also, pedigree breeding has been successfully employed in a number of instances to concentrate genes of interest. Therefore, in order to obtain inbred line having the genotype of excellent combining ability by selfing and incrossing to improve breeding efficiency of strawberry, elite varieties were self-pollinated. From the selfing line of "Benihoppe" cultivar, we selected "Wongyo 3111" having excellent horticultural traits such as plant vigor, sugar content and fruit hardness among these progenies. "Wongyo 3111" shows erect plant type, vigorous growth habit, early flower bud differentiation with 16~17 flowers per cluster. Fruits of "Wongyo 3111" are conical type having a bright red skin color, and 17.2 g in an average weight. Also that have a relatively more high sugar/acid ratio and firmness than check cultivars as sugar content of 11.3oBx, acidity of 0.50% and firmness of 21.7 g/$mm^2$. But although yield of "Wongyo 3111" is not significantly different from check cultivars, its marketable yield is remarkably lower than that of check cultivars because of poor fruit-setting under low temperature. Disease and pest reactions of "Wongyo 3111" are more sensitive to powery mildew, anthracnose and spotted spider mites than check cultivars. Therefore, "Wongyo 3111" is suitable for intermediate parent line better than as a cultivation cultivar.

The objective of this study was to determine inhibitory activities of four volatile plant essential oils (cinnamon oil, fennel oil, origanum oil and thyme oil) on in vitro growth of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae causing Fusarium wilt of strawberry plants. Results showed that these essential oils inhibited in vitro conidial germination and mycelial growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae in a dose-dependent manner. Cinnamon oil was found to be most effective one in suppressing conidial germination while fennel oil, origanum oil and thyme oil showed moderate inhibition of conidial germination at similar levels. Cinnamon oil, origanum oil and thyme oil showed moderate antifungal activities against mycelial growth at similar levels while fennel oil had relatively lower antifungal activity against mycelial growth. Antifungal effects of these four plant essential oils in different combinations on in vitro fungal growth were also evaluated. These essential oils demonstrated synergistic antifungal activities against conidial germination and mycelial growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae in vitro. Simultaneous application of origanum oil and thyme oil enhanced their antimicrobial activities against conidial germination and fungal mycelial growth. These results underpin that volatile plant essential oils could be used in eco-friendly integrated disease management of Fusarium wilt in strawberry fields.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the primary inoculum of strawberry anthracnose in nursery field. The pathogen, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was not detected in soil and weeds of nursery field but symptom of anthracnose was developed in mother plants collected from market after incubation in humid chamber, The symptom of anthracnose was expressed in the strawberry plant that reserved for 17 days in field after inoculation by spore suspension but was not observed there after. When inoculated leaves were observed by SEM, only appressoria were observed 7 days after inoculation. So, it is guessed that dissemination of Colletotrichum sp. into nursery held will be by contamination of mother plants, and diagnosis by naked eyes may be impossible because symptom will be not developed if environment is to be adequate to penetration and in case of imperfect penetration after germination, the pathogen remains appressorium to achieve penetration.

The objective of this research was to investigate the suitable cultivar for organic strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch.) cultivation in Korea. The six strawberry cultivars which were bred and commonly cultivated in Korea as forcing and semi-forcing culture were tested in this experiment. To achieve the objectives, various characteristics of these cultivars were investigated for two consecutive years such as growth habit, yield, fruit quality and occurrence rate of disease/pest. As results of this research, the total yield of 'Seolhyang' was the highest among cultivars tested in both forcing and semi-forcing cultivation. The average of soluble solid contents (SSC) in 'Seolhyang' was $12.0^{\circ}Bx$ that is lower than other cultivars and especially below $10^{\circ}Bx$ after March (high temperature period). But there was not much difference in SSC among 6 cultivars until the end of February. The average of hardness in 'Seolhyang' was 279g/${\phi}5\;mm$ which was a little higher than that of 'Akihime'. Titration acidity (TA) in 'Maehyang' was 0.69% which was the highest value among 6 cultivars. Total fresh/root weight of 'Seonhong' and leaf area of 'Seolhyang' were significant among other cultivars' ones in forcing culture. Growth habits (fresh weight, root weight, leaf area, etc.) showed no significant difference among cultivars in semi-forcing culture. The lowest occurrence rate for powdery mildew and aphids was found in 'Seolhyang', but gray mold was severer than other cultivars. The density of two spider mites was the lowest in 'Redpearl'. We have concluded that 'Seolhyang' is the most suitable cultivar for organic strawberry cultivation by the result of yield, fruit quality and resistance of disease/pest.
