The Effect of Replacing Grass with Urea Treated Fresh Rice Straw in Dairy Cow Diet

  • Nine tons of fresh rice straw from early-maturing varieties was ensiled with 50 g urea $kg^{-1}$ DM straw in plastic bags immediately after threshing. Five months after storage, preserved straw was used to partially replace elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum, Schumach) for lactating cows. Eight crossbred Holstein lactating cows (75% of Holstein blood) in their second to fourth lactation and in mid-lactation were arranged in a balanced design with two squares consisting of $4\;periods{\times}4\;treatments$ (100% grass ad lib. as a control; 75% grass+urea treated fresh rice straw (UTrFRS) ad lib.; 50% grass+UTrFRS ad lib.; 25% grass+UTrFRS ad libitum) in one square. A concentrate supplement was given at a rate of 400 g per day per kg of milk produced. Samples of fresh straw taken in the field and UTrFRS and elephant grass taken at feeding time were evaluated in a degradation trial with 3 fistulated heifers (undefined blood ratio of crossbred of Sindhi and local yellow cattle). Straw preserved for 5-9 months was in nearly all cases of good quality. Crude protein (CP) content was increased 2.1 fold and 48 h dry matter loss (DML) was 20% higher compared to dry straw. Elephant grass cultivated intensively was low in DM content and 10% higher in 48 h DML compared to UTrFRS. Dry matter intake (DMI) was higher for the mixture of UtrFRS and Elephant grass, and highest when one-third of the roughage was UTrFRS. Higher DMI of mixed roughage diets was probably due to the low DM content of elephant grass in the sole grass roughage diet. Increasing substitution of elephant grass with UTrFRS up to 75% of the roughage component increased milk fat content and had no effect on milk yield and other milk composition parameters. Feeding UTrFRS, partially replacing elephant grass in the diets of lactating cows in the dry season can reduce the cost of roughage.

A Logical Critique of Criticism and Anticriticism of Lee Yeung-Hi (리영희 비판과 반비판의 논리적 비판: '북한맹.시장맹' 논쟁을 중심으로)

  • Lee Yeung-Hi is one of the most influential journalist in the modern history of Korea. Nevertheless, the judgement about him has been parallelized by opposite sides. He is called 'the Master of ideology', while the other calls him 'the culprit of theorization'. This thesis deduced the contemporary meaning of person Lee Yeung-Hi in order to promote communication for both sides. I compared their logical arguments and pointed out the error they missed. Also, I clarified that the criticism and anticriticism for Lee Young-Hi in the fields of both journalism and academia have fallacies, such as the fallacy of straw man, and the fallacy of question-begging. I criticized their arguments through the view of 'struggling to seek truth', which is the core value of Lee Yeung-Hi's thought. The necessity of communication between advocators and it's critics is due to the condition of Korean Journalism. Korean Journalism does not have much space to accept Lee Young-Hi in only one side. Paradoxically, the contemporary meaning of the truth that Journalist Lee Young-Hi had sought is profound and deep because of the condition where Korean Journalism is being dominated by political parallelism.

  • Brewing tea with regular teapots can cause a problem in keeping the temperature of the tea. Cold weather, a cold teapot, and/or the temperature of tea leaves make tea cold, lowering the temperature of the tea leaves that can also make the flavor of the tea leaves worse. This experiment shows both the problem and the solution to the temperature problem of tea leaves. To maintain the appropriate temperature and reduce the problem, we researched and developed a special straw for tea leaves as a result of this experiment The straw consists of various filtering holes(diameter 1~2 mm) with the height of 5 mm from the very bottom of the straw. Using the straw is better to keep higher temperature, better flavor, and the smell of tea. Also, the sensory evaluation shows that the overall taste of tea is improved(p<0.05).

Engineering Properties of Concrete with Rice-Straw Ash (볏짚재를 혼입(混入)한 콘크리트의 공학적(工學的) 성질(性質))

  • This study was performed to evaluate the engineering properties of concrete using normal portland cement, natural aggregates and rice-straw ash. The following conclusions were drawn; 1. The unit weight was in the range of $2,250{\sim}2,335kgf/m^3$, the weights of those concrete were decreased 1~5% than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively. 2. The highest strength was achieved by 5% rice-straw ash filled rice-straw ash concrete, it was increased 17% by compressive strength, 30% by tensile strength and 21% by bending strength than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively. 3. The ultrasonic pulse velocity was in the range of 4,059~4,360m/s, which was showed about the same compared to that of the normal cement concrete. The highest ultrasonic pulse velocity was showed by 5% rice-straw ash filled rice-straw ash concrete. 4. The acid-proof was increased with increase of the content of rice-straw ash. The acid-proof was increased 1.15 times by 5% rice straw ash, 1.45 times by 10%, 1.6 times by 15% rice-straw ash filled concrete than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively.

  • This study is performed to evaluate the engineering properties of rice-straw ash concrete using normal portland cement, natural aggregates and rice-straw ash. The following conclusion are drawn; 1. The dynamic modulus of elasticity is in the range of $289{\times}10^3{\sim}345{\times}10^3kgf/cm^2$, which is showed about the same compared to that of the normal cement concrete. The highest dynamic modulus is showed by 5% rice-straw ash filled rice-straw ash concrete 2. The static modulus of elasticity is in the range of $268{\times}10^3{\sim}335{\times}10^3kgf/cm^2$, which is showed about the same compared to that of the normal cement concrete. The dynamic modulus is increased approximately 3~10% than that of the static modulus. 3. The poisson's number of rice-straw ash concrete is less than that of the normal cement concrete. 4. Accordingly, if we use suitable quantity of rice-straw ash as a replacement of cement, it will greatly improve engineering properties of concrete.

A Qualitative Study on the Use of Fallacies in the 2022 Korean Presidential Debates (20대 대선 후보 TV토론에서의 오류 사용에 관한 질적 연구)

  • The present study aims to explore how fallacies, arguments that seem valid but are not, appear in 2022 South Korean presidential debates. It qualitatively analyzes the candidates' remarks in the first and last presidential debates (240 minutes) using 20 formal and informal fallacy concepts as a theoretical framework. Results show that the three candidates used 23 informal fallacies from 15 categories, including the straw man, red herring, begging the question, complex question, hasty generalization, appeal to the masses, and you too. The candidates relied on fallacies to defend their image and electoral agenda from adversary attacks and to contaminate their opponent's image and agenda. The arguers, who struggled with tough questions, frequently made fallacies as pseudo-arguments to avoid the situation without lying and violating election laws. This study indicates that the fallacy system can be a framework for analyzing crucial political content. Moreover, it warns against the abuse of fallacies in TV debates.

Effects of Spent Mushroom Substrates Supplementation on Rumen Fermentation and Blood Metabolites in Hanwoo Steers

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of supplementation of spent mushroom substrates (SMS) on rumen fermentation and blood metabolites in Hanwoo steers. The experiment was conducted as a duplicated Latin square design with six Hanwoo steers ($600{\pm}47\;kg$), each permanently fitted with a ruminal cannula. There were three treatments; i) control (concentrates 4.8 kg +rice straw 1.2 kg/d), ii) Pleurotus eryngiia (PE) treatment (concentrates 4.8 kg+rice straw 0.73 kg+Pleurotus eryngiia 1.20 kg/d) and iii) Pleurotus osteratus (PO) treatment (concentrates 4.8 kg+rice straw 0.73 kg+Pleurotus osteratus 1.20 kg/d). There were no major effects of different dietary treatments on rumen parameters such as pH, ammonia-N, individual and total VFA production. Parameters of N utilization, including blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total protein and albumin levels, were not significantly different among the treatments, except for creatinine. Thus, the present results indicated that protein utilization was mostly unaffected by SMS treatments such as PE and PO, even though creatinine concentration was lower in PE compared with control and PO treatments (p<0.05). The present results indicate that Pleurotus eryngii and Pleurotus osteratus could be used as a forage source to replace 40% of rice straw without any negative effects on rumen fermentation and blood metabolites in Hanwoo steers.

Evaluation of the physical properties of organic fillers made from agricultural byproducts (농업부산물로 제조된 유기충전제의 물리적 특성 평가)

  • In this study, we investigated the physical properties of powders made from agricultural byproducts, including rice straw, peanut husks, and garlic stems, to manufacture a new organic filler used for making paperboard. These materials were collected individually, and then we measured their chemical compositions. The byproducts were ground with a laboratory grinder and fractionated with 60-, 100-, and 200-mesh sieves to make many grades of organic fillers. After the grinding and fractionation, the yield, mean particle size, and particle size distribution of each grade were measured. Particle shapes were also investigated using a scanning electron microscope. The organic filler made from rice straw had the highest yield of the largest particle size group and higher contents of cellulose and hemicellulose than those made from peanut husks and garlic stems. The rice straw also showed more regular particle shapes and a lower aspect ratio than the other agricultural byproducts.
