  • Piping Systems are usually designed for thermal expansion loads based on uniform temperatures at each cross section. However, in lines with low flow rates such as surge lines and spray lines, large transverse temperature gradients have been observed, resulting in too types of additional thermal stresses : (1) local thermal gradient stresses which are independent of routing and supports and (2) gross bending stresses due to induced pipe curvature which are routing and support system dependent. This paper presents a simplified method for analyzing a PER surge line for stratified flow.

과학기술연구개발활동조사의 개선방안 -기업부문을 중심으로- (Policies for Improving the Survey of Research and Development in Science and Technology: The Case of Industrial Sector)

  • The survey of research and development (R&D) in science and technology (S&T) covers the current status of R&D activities in S&T in Korea, and provides a basis for decision making regarding S&T policy. Continuous improvement of the survey is widely needed to present reliable national basic statistics. Therefore, the purpose of the study is two-fold: to introduce sampling survey method in industrial sector and to make statistical technique to deal with non-response data from industrial sector. To these ends, first, case studies of the United States and Japan are illustrated. A new sampling design for the R&D survey is proposed and implementing stratified random sampling scheme is suggested. Moreover, statistical analysis of the non-response data is dealt with. Based on several screening criteria, we develop a new imputation method suitable for the R&D survey and also provide more detailed implementation plan. Various solutions to a problem arising from non-response item are also presented. Finally, some implications of the results are discussed.

  • Numerical solutions for spin-up problem of a thermally stratified fluid in a cylinder with an insulating sidewall and time-dependent rotation rate are presented. Detailed results are given for aspect ratio of O(1), fixed Ekman number $10-^{4}$, Rossby number 0.05 and Prandtl number O(1). Angular velocity of a cylinder wall changes with following formula, $\Omega_f=\Omega_i+\Delta\Omega[1-\exp(-t/t_c)]$. Here, this $t_c$, value, which is very significant in present study, represents that how fast/slow the angular velocity of the cylinder wall reaches final angular velocity. The normalized azimuthal velocity and meridional flow plots for several tc value which cover ranges of the stratification parameter S(1 ~ 10) are presented. The role of viscous-diffusion and Coriolis term in present study is examined by diagnostic analysis of the azimuthal velocity equation.

1 D contaminant transport through unsaturated stratified media using EFGM

  • In the present study, analysis of contaminant transport through one dimensional unsaturated stratified media using element free Galerkin method has been presented. Element free Galerkin method is a meshfree method. A FORTRAN code has been developed for the same. The developed model is compared with the results available in the literature and are found in good agreement. Further a parametric study has been conducted to examine the effects of various parameters like velocity, dispersivity, retardation factor and effect of saturation on the contaminant flow. The results presented conclude that transport of contaminant is retarded in unsaturated zone in comparison with the saturated zone.

A Numerical Study of the Effects of Piston Head Configurations on Stratified Mixture Formation in Gasoline Direct-injection Engines

  • In this paper, the characteristics of flow and spray motions affected by from piston head configurations were investigated numerically. Calculations were carried out from intake process to the end of compression. GTT (Generalized Tank and Tube method) code, which includes a third order upwind Chakravarthy-Osher TVD scheme and k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with fuel spray analysis was used for the calculations. As a results, piston heads with smaller radii of curvature were found to give stronger reverse tumble than those with larger radii of curvature. Similar results are shown in the convection and diffusion of fuel sprays.

  • Finite-difference analysis was conducted to study the natural convection of a stably stratified salt-water solution in an annulus due to lateral heating. The main purpose of this study is to examine in detail the multi-layered flow structure. Calculation was thus made for R $a_{\eta}$=2*10$^{5}$ and 6.5*10$^{5}$ . Formation of layered flow structure, merging process of layers, the corresponding temperature and concentration distributions, Nusselt number variations with time are examined. Numerical results show that in each layer, the temperature profile looks 'S`-shaped and the concentration profile is uniform due to the convective mixing. The formation of the roll and the layer is governed by natural convection due to the temperature gradient and the merging process of the layer by diffusion of the concentration.ation.

가솔린 직분식 엔진의 연소실 개발을 위한 분무 및 유동장 해석 (Analysis of Spray and Flow Fields for Development of Spark-ignited Direct Injection Engine)

  • For development of SDI(Spark-ignited Direct Injection) engine, stratified mixture formation with adequate strength at spark plug was required in wide range of engine operating conditions. So, spray structure under high ambient pressure and spray distribution after impingement on piston bowl in motoring engine was visualized by using laser equipments. Also, incylinder bulk flow structure was measured by using PIV (Paiticle Image Velocimetry) system. Counter-rotating tumble port and bowl piston was found effective to conserve bulk motion directed to spark plug in compression stroke. In addition, mask attached near valve seat in intake port was proposed to attenuate conventional tumble component and enhance counter-rotating tumble component.

  • Models for the rate of atomization and deposition of droplets for stratified and annular flow in horizontal pipes are presented. The entrained fraction is the result of a balance between the rate of atomization of the liquid layer that is in contact with air and the rate of deposition of droplets. The rate of deposition is strongly affected by gravity in horizontal pipes. The gravitational settling of droplets is influenced by droplet size: heavier droplets deposit more rapidly. Model calculation and simulation results are compared with experimental data from various diameter pipes. Validation for the suggested models was performed by comparing the Safety and Performance Analysis Code for Nuclear Power Plants calculation results with the droplet experimental data obtained in various diameter horizontal pipes.

성층희박연소 운전조건에서 분사시기에 따른 분무유도식 직접분사 가솔린엔진의 분무 및 화염특성 (Effect of Injection Pressure and Injection Timing on Spray and Flame Characteristics of Spray-Guided Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Engine under Lean Stratified Combustion Operation)

  • 분무유도식 DISI엔진의 성층연소운전조건에서 분무 및 화염특성에 대한 실험적 연구가 수행되었다. 연소가시화를 통하여 성층연소 DISI의 연소는 희박 예혼합 연소와 확산연소의 성격을 모두 가지고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 분사시기에 따른 혼합기 형성특성이 연소의 특성을 결정하는 중요한 인자임을 관찰하였다. 분무와 혼합기 가시화를 통해 낮은 분위기압에서의 over-mixing, 높은 분위기압에서의 under-mixing이 발생하는 것을 확인하였으며 이러한 혼합기 형성과정의 결과에 따라 화염특성, 연소효율 등의 연소특성이 결정되는 것을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 또한, NOx, IMEP도 분사시기에 따른 경향성을 보였으며, 분사시기에 따른 연소상의 변화에 의한 영향임을 확인하였다.
