  • This study investigates the effects of parent-adolescent communication, adolescent self-esteem, and strategies in peer conflict situations on the satisfaction of adolescents with their peer relationships. The subjects included students attending a girls' and a boys' middle school in Gongju City. Random sampling was used to pick a class from each of the three grades in the schools. 233 students, who's both parents were living, were used in the final analysis in an effort to examine the impacts of student communication with parents on student satisfaction with their friends. The findings were as follows: the subjects most often used the yielding type of conflict-resolving strategy, followed by the cooperating, compromising, dominating, and avoiding strategy-type. The girls showed a higher level of parent-child communication than the boys. Girls had high self-esteem and mostly adopted the cooperating type of conflict-resolving strategies, followed by the yielding, compromising, dominating and avoiding strategy-type. The boys mostly employed the yielding strategy type followed by the cooperating, compromising, dominating, and avoiding strategy-types. The results indicate that the satisfaction level with friends was high among those who used the avoiding strategy-type less and yielding strategy-type more. Girls were found to have high self-esteem and engaged in communication with their parents. The compromising, cooperating, and dominating types of conflict-resolving strategies did not exercise significant influences on their satisfaction with friends.

  • This study is an exploratory study on the factors that affect the types of user's coping strategies in online game harassment situations. A survey(N=416) was conducted to investigate the experiences of harassment in online games, expectations on organizational response, and the frequencies of selecting each type of coping strategy. The result shows that the female users usually experience more harassment than the male users, especially in sexual harassment. Female users often choose gender masking, seeking help, avoidance, and mirroring strategies compared to males, while males choose self-blame. The effects of harassment experiences, expectation on organizational response, and gender on each type of coping strategy were analyzed using the structural equation model(SEM). Sexual harassment experiences significantly affect all types of strategies, and the higher the expectation on organizational response, the more likely users to seek help rather than to select gender masking. These results are expected to serve the basis for establishing harassment-related regulations in online games.

  • This study investigated the types of elementary science-gifted students' coping strategies and teachers' desired teaching strategies in anomalous situations. Their epistemological beliefs about science were then analyzed on the bases of the types. To do this, 5th and 6th year science-gifted students (N=72) were asked to respond to an open-ended question with some of them being interviewed deeply. The analyses of the results indicated seven types of coping strategies in anomalous situations and were identified as follows: Abandoning, asking a teacher for help, trying the experiment again with same methods, trying the experiments again with different methods, trying the experiment again after actively analyzing the causes, recognizing the experimental results, and explaining the experimental results. Seven types of teachers' desired teaching strategies emerged and were also identified as follows: Encouraging, providing successful experimental results, explaining, providing the opportunity for trying the experiment again with same methods, providing the opportunity for trying the experiments again with different methods, providing the opportunity and help for trying the experiment again after actively analyzing the causes, and providing the opportunity and help for explaining the experimental results. The fourteen types were grouped again into four categories such as 'transferring facts', 'constructing facts', 'transferring meanings', and 'constructing meanings' on the bases of the epistemological beliefs toward knowledge and the epistemological beliefs toward relation. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • Despite the advantages of energy arbitrage using energy storage systems (ESSs), the high cost of ESSs has not attracted storage owners for the arbitrage. However, as the costs of ESS have decreased and the price volatility of the electricity market has increased, many studies have been conducted on energy arbitrage using ESSs. In this study, the existing two-period model is modified in consideration of the ESS cost and risk-free contracts. Optimal investment strategies that maximize the sum of external effects caused by price changes and arbitrage profits are formulated by market participants. The optimal amounts of ESS investment for three types of investors in three different market structures are determined with game theory, and strategies in the form of the mixed-complementarity problem are solved by using the PATH solver of GAMS. Results show that when all market participants can participate in investment simultaneously, only customers invest in ESSs, which means that customers can obtain market power by operating their ESSs. Attracting other types of ESS investors, such as merchant storage owners and producers, to mitigate market power can be achieved by increasing risk-free contracts.

  • This article investigates which types of the strategies announced by the listed firms contribute to enhancing the long-term performance of the companies. Since 2002, Korean Exchange adopted the "faire disclosure policy" which mandates that all publicly traded companies must disclose material information to all investors at the same time. Thanks to the policy, Korean investors can, now, easily access the board's decision on management strategies on the same day the decision is made. If the companies trustfully carry out their announced strategies, we can decide which types of strategies actually enhance or deteriorate the long-term performance, simply by comparing the announced strategies and the firm's performance. The sample companies are confined to 60 firms that became listed in the KOSDAQ market through back-door listing from 2003 to 2005. Using only the newly listed companies, we can avoid the interference on the long-term performance of the strategies pursued before the event date. This often holds true, for many companies radically modify their strategies after the listing. Furthermore, the back-door listing companies serve our purpose better than IPO companies do, because the former tend to have a variety of announcement within a given period of time beginning the listing date. Using these sample companies, this article analyzes the effect on one year buy-and-hold returns and abnormal buy-and-hold returns after the listing of the various types of strategies announced during the same period of time. The results show that those evidences of restructuring such as 'reduction of capital' and 'resignation of incumbent board members', actually contribute to the increase in adjusted long-term stock returns. Those strategies which can be view as evidence of new investment such as 'increase in tangible assets', 'acquisition of other companies', do also helps the stockholders better off. On the contrary, 'increase in bank loans', 'changes of CEO' and 'merger' deteriorate the equity value. The last findings let us to presume that the back-door listing companies appear to use the bank loans for value-reducing activities; the change in CEO is not a sign of restructuring, but rather a sign of failure of the restructuring; another merger carried out after back-door listing itself is also value-reducing activity. This article's findings on reduction of capital, merger and bank loans oppose the results of the former empirical studies which analyze only the short-term effect on stock price. Therefore, more long-term performance studies on public disclosures are in order.

  • Symbiotic evolutionary algorithms, also called cooperative coevolutionary algorithms, are stochastic search algorithms that imitate the biological coevolution process through symbiotic interactions. In the algorithms, the fitness evaluation of an individual required first selecting symbiotic partners of the individual. Several partner selection strategies are provided. The goal of this study is to analyze how much partnering strategies can influence the performance of the algorithms. With two types of test-bed problems: the NKC model and the binary string covering problem, extensive experiments are carried out to compare the performance of partnering strategies, using the analysis of variance. The experimental results indicate that there does not exist statistically significant difference in their performance.

  • The purpose of this study is to theoretically understand hope theory suggested by Snyder and confirm its utility in the school settings. We analyzed the survey data responded by general high school students to find clustering types of hope and mean difference of learning strategies by each type through ANOVA. Results are as follows. First, hope by cluster analysis resulted in four types. Second, hope and learning strategy showed statistically positive correlation. Especially two sub-variables of hope and meta-cognition had highest correlation. Researchers suggested the direction of a future study to investigate structural relation among hope profile, student achievement, adjustment, and etc.
