Pipe drainage is one of the effective slope protein works that can be adopted practically. As fine soil particles are suspended in percolating water, the strainer structure of under drain pipes in necessary to prevent the immediate clogging by soil suspension flow. This study deals with the effective strainer structure of under drain pipes for slope protection. The effective strainer structure of under pipes is the funneled strainer in which pore radius is enlarged toward flow direction. It is designed from the rheological properties of soil suspension flow which prevents the immediate clogging. Experimental results showed that the pipe drain discharge through the funneled strainers was larger than that through the constant pore radius strainers. This theorectial and experimental results indicate that the strainer with enlarged pore radius toward flow direction, is more effective than the strainer with constant pore radius.
In this study, flow analysis was performed on three types of strainers for ships with different flow rates to predict the pressure drop of the strainer due to the filter of strainer. In the case of flow analysis, the flow analysis was performed by applying the porous media method by applying the resistance value derived by Ergun's equation to the filter position. As a result of the analysis, it was found that when the dimensions of the strainer body were small, the influence of the flow rate on the pressure drop was large. In addition, the amount of pressure drop and the flow rate are almost linearly proportional, and an analysis formula that can predict the amount of pressure drop was derived. In order to predict the amount of pressure drop of the strainer when blockage exist in the strainer filter, the analysis was performed by introducing the resistance ratio to derive the prediction equation. Using this equation, it is thought that it will be possible to predict the performance of the strainer due to blockage in the future strainer design and field application.
The ASME strainers have been newly installed at the suction side of each reactor coolant pump to get rid of the foreign materials which may damage the pump impeller or interfere with the coolant path of fuel flow tube or primary plate type heat exchanger. The strainer was designed in accordance with ASME SEC. III, DIV. 1, Class 3 and the structural integrity was verified by seismic analysis. The screen was designed in accordance with the effective void area from the result of flow analysis for T-type strainer. After installation of the strainer, it was confirmed through the field test that the flow characteristics of primary cooling system were not adversely affected. The pressure loss coefficient was calculated by Darcy equation using the pressure difference through each strainer and the flow rate measured during the strainer performance test. And these are useful data to predict flow variations by the pressure difference.
An amphibious inspection robot system (hereafter AIROS) is being developed to visually inspect the in-containment refueling storage water tank (hereafter IRWST) strainer in APR1400 instead of a human diver. Four IRWST strainers are located in the IRWST, which is filled with boric acid water. Each strainer has 108 sub-assembly strainer fin modules that should be inspected with the VT-3 method according to Reg. guide 1.82 and the operation manual. AIROS has 6 thrusters for submarine voyage and 4 legs for walking on the top of the strainer. An inverse kinematic algorithm was implemented in the robot controller for exact walking on the top of the IRWST strainer. The IRWST strainer has several top cross braces that are extruded on the top of the strainer, which can be obstacles of walking on the strainer, to maintain the frame of the strainer. Therefore, a robot leg should arrive at the position beside the top cross brace. For this reason, we used an image processing technique to find the top cross brace in the sole camera image. The sole camera image is processed to find the existence of the top cross brace using the cross edge detection algorithm in real time. A 5-DOF robot arm that has multiple camera modules for simultaneous inspection of both sides can penetrate narrow gaps. For intuitive presentation of inspection results and for management of inspection data, inspection images are stored in the control PC with camera angles and positions to synthesize and merge the images. The synthesized images are then mapped in a 3D CAD model of the IRWST strainer with the location information. An IRWST strainer mock-up was fabricated to teach the robot arm scanning and gaiting. It is important to arrive at the designated position for inserting the robot arm into all of the gaps. Exact position control without anchor under the water is not easy. Therefore, we designed the multi leg robot for the role of anchoring and positioning. Quadruped robot design of installing sole cameras was a new approach for the exact and stable position control on the IRWST strainer, unlike a traditional robot for underwater facility inspection. The developed robot will be practically used to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the inspection of nuclear power plant components.
An 'Y' strainer type automatic flow rate regulating valve, which functions are to remove impurities from hot water inside the pipe and to maintain a constant flow rate regardless of variations of the differential pressure between valve inlet and outlet at the same time, is developed for distributing hot water equally to several pipes with district heating or central heating system. Numerical analysis of the three dimensional turbulent flow field in a valve shape is carried out to confirm the flow field whether the designed regulator shape is acceptable or not. The final developed valve improves installation time and cost and maintenance ability comparing with set-up 'Y' strainer and regulator separately. Tolerance for the nominal flow rate is also satisfied within ${\pm}5%$.
A ball strainer screen module, which is used for a condenser tube cleaning system, is a critical mechanical component for maintaining condenser cleanliness. Despite of this importance, not many research have been focused on this module because of its relatively low usage. Employing CFD, this study examines the implication of fluid velocity change and blockage ratio on the ball strainer screen velocity and the static pressure distribution. Through this study, the impact of blockage in the space between ball strainer screen modules is verified. Also, it is found that the ranges of non-dimensional velocity distribution and static pressure distribution decrease as blockage ratio becomes smaller.
