In this research, a slotted patch antenna sensor is designed for wireless strain and crack sensing. An off-the-shelf RFID (radiofrequency identification) chip is adopted in the antenna sensor design for signal modulation. The operation power of the RFID chip is captured from wireless reader interrogation signal, so the sensor operation is completely battery-free (passive) and wireless. For strain and crack sensing of a structure, the antenna sensor is bonded on the structure surface like a regular strain gage. Since the antenna resonance frequency is directly related with antenna dimension, which deforms when strain occurs on the structural surface, the deformation/strain can be correlated with antenna resonance frequency shift measured by an RFID reader. The slotted patch antenna sensor performance is first evaluated through mechanics-electromagnetics coupled simulation. Extensive experiments are then conducted to validate the antenna sensor performance, including tensile and compressive strain sensing, wireless interrogation range, and fatigue crack sensing.
Most of mechanical failures are caused by repeated loadings and therefore they are strongly related to fatigue. To avoid the failures caused by fatigue, determination of an optimal shape of a structure is one of the very important factors in the initial design stage. Shape optimization for a compact tension specimen in opening mode in fracture mechanics, was accomplished by the linear elastic fracture mechanics and the growth-strain method in this study. Also shape optimization for a cantilever beam in mixed mode was carried out by the same techniques. The linear elastic fracture mechanics was used to estimate stress intensity factors and fatigue lives. And the growth-strain method was used to optimize the shape of the initial shape of the specimens. From the results of the shape optimization, it was found that shapes of two types of specimens and a cantilever beam optimized by the growth-strain method prolong their fatigue lives very much. Therefore, it was verified that the growth-strain method is an appropriate technique for shape optimization of a structure having a crack.
This paper considers a delamination analysis of a statically undetermined inhomogeneous beam structure of rectangular section with viscoelastic behavior under torsion. The beam is built in at its two ends. The beam has two longitudinal inhomogeneous layers with a delamination crack between them. A notch is made in the upper crack arm. The external torsion moment applied on the beam is a function of time. Under these conditions, the beam has one degree of indeterminacy. In order to derive the strain energy release rate, first, the static indeterminacy is resolved. Then the strain energy release rate is obtained by analyzing the balance of the energy with considering the viscoelastic behavior. The strain energy release rate is found also by analyzing the compliance of the beam for checkup. Solution of the strain energy release rate in a beam without a notch in the upper crack arm is derived too. In this case, the beam has two degrees of static indeterminacy (the torsion moment in the upper crack arm is treated as an additional internal redundant unknown). A parametric investigation of the strain energy release rate is carried-out.

With an active structural involvement in spiral case structure (SCS) that is always the design and research focus of hydroelectric power plant (HPP), the compressible membrane sandwiched between steel spiral case and surrounding reinforced concrete was often assumed to be linear elastic material in conventional design analysis of SCS. Unfortunately considerable previous studies have proved that the foam material serving as membrane exhibits essentially nonlinear mechanical behavior. In order to clarify the effect of membrane (foam) material's nonlinear stress-strain behavior on SCS, this work performed a case study on SCS with a compressible membrane using the ABAQUS code after a sound calibration of the employed constitutive model describing foam material. In view of the successful capture of fitted stress-strain curve of test by the FEM program, we recommend an application and dissemination of the simulation technique employed in this work for membrane material description to structural designers of SCS. Even more important, the case study argues that taking into account the nonlinear stress-strain response of membrane material in loading process is definitely essential. However, we hold it unnecessary to consider the membrane material's hysteresis and additionally, employment of nonlinear elastic model for membrane material description is adequate to the structural design of SCS. Understanding and accepting these concepts will help to analyze and predict the structural performance of SCS more accurately in design effort.
Structural damage detection, damage localization and severity estimation of jacket platforms, based on calculating modal strain energy is presented in this paper. In the structure, damage often causes a loss of stiffness in some elements, so modal parameters; mode shapes and natural frequencies, in the damaged structure are different from the undamaged state. Geometrical location of damage is detected by computing modal strain energy change ratio (MSECR) for each structural element, which elements with higher MSECR are suspected to be damaged. For each suspected damaged element, by computing cross-modal strain energy (CMSE), damage severity as the stiffness reduction factor -that represented the ratios between the element stiffness changes to the undamaged element stiffness- is estimated. Numerical studies are demonstrated for a three dimensional, single bay, four stories frame of the existing jacket platform, based on the synthetic data that generated from finite element model. It is observed that this method can be used for damage detection of this kind of structures.
A method to predict the strain responses from the measurements of displacement responses is considered. The method uses a transformation matrix which is composed of a displacement modal matrix and a strain modal matrix. The method can predict strains at points where displacements are not measured as well as at displacement measuring points. One of the drawbacks of the strain prediction method is that the displacement responses must be measured at many points on a structure simultaneously. This difficulty can be overcome by measuring the FRFs between displacements at a reference point and other point in sequence with a two channel measuring equipment This procedure is based on the assumption that the characteristics of excitation applied to the structure do not vary with time.
This paper describes the design processes and evaluation results of a small-sized six-axis force/torque sensor. The new six-axis force/torque sensor including S-type structure has been developed using a parallel plate structure as a basic sensing element. In order tominimize coupling errors, the location of strain gages has been determined based on the finite element analysis and the connections of strain gages have been made such that the bridge circuit with 4 strain gages becomes balanced. Several design modifications result in a similar strain sensitivity for six-axis forces and moments, and the reduced coupling errors of 2.6% FS between each forces and moments. Calibration test results show that the six-axis load cell developed which has light weight of 135g and the maximum capacities of 196 N in forces and 19.6 N.m in moments is estimated to be within 7.1% FS in coupling error.
A finite element analysis technology applicable to the prediction of the static nonlinear response of cable roof structure is presented. The unified kinematic description is employed to formulate the present cable element and different strain definitions such as Green-Lagrange strain, Biot strain and Hencky strain can be adopted. The Newton-Raphson method is used to trace the nonlinear load-displacement path. In the iteration process, the compressive stress of a cable element is not allowed. For the verification of the present cable element, four numerical examples are tackled. Finally, numerical results obtained by using the present cable element are provided as new benchmark test results for cable structures under static loads.
