Strain hardening behavior during hydroforming has been experimentally investigated. The variation of flow stress was used as an index of strain hardening during respective processes and the flow stress was estimated from the correlationship between flow stress and effective strain. The local hardness after hydroformig was also predicted by effective strain. By using the inter-relationships between hardness-flow stress-effective strain at variable pre-strains, the strain hardening behavior during hydroforming has been successfully analyzed. The comparison of predicted hardness with measured hardness confirmed that the methodology used in this study was feasible and the strain hardening behavior can be quantitatively estimated.

Concrete behaves as ductile material at high temperature. The existing stress-strain relationship is not valid at high temperature condition. Thus, stress-strain curve of concrete at high temperature is re-established by modifying Saenz's suggestion in this study. A constitutive model of concrete subjected to elevated temperature is also suggested. The model consists of three components; free thermal stain, mechanical strain and thermal creep strain. As the temperature increase, the thermal creep becomes more critical to the failure of concrete. The thermal creep strain of concrete is derived from the modified power-law relation for the steady state creep. The proposed equation for thermal creep employs a Dorn's temperature compensated time theorem
This study was carried out to investigate the consolidation characteristics of the remolded clay by the oedometer and the constant rate of strain(CRS) consolidation tests. As the rate of strain increases, the settlement rapidly decreased. As the ratio of the sand in the specimen increases, its effect on the rate of strain to the settlement was reduced. As the effective stress increased, the void ratio decreased, while the rate of strain increased, it did not show a clear variation. The reduction of the void ratio was shown to be less than the oedometer test. The coefficient of vertical consolidation with effective stress showed very large variation around preconsolidation stress, but the rate of strain did not provide significant effects. The rate of strain with effective stress gradually decreased at all tests and mixed ratio of sand. The rate of strain at the constant rate of strain tests showed smaller than in the oedometer test. The coefficient of consolidation at the constant rate of strain tests showed much more increase than in the oedometer test. The ratio of the vertical coefficient of consolidation by the odometer and the constant rate of strain tests showed a large difference according to various tests method and mixing ratio. Therefore, it is recommended that careful attention should be paid to designing the soft ground improvement.
In this work, we have employed the strain gradient plasticity theory to investigate the effect of material size on the deformation behavior in metal forming process. Flow stress is expressed in terms of strain, strain gradient (spatial derivative of strain) and intrinsic material length. The least square method coupled with strain gradient plasticity was used to calculate the components of strain gradient at each element of material. For demonstrating the size effect, the proposed approach has been applied to plane compression process and micro rolling process. Results show when the characteristic length of the material comes to the intrinsic material length, the effect of strain gradient is noteworthy. For the microcompression, the additional work hardening at higher strain gradient regions results in uniform distribution of strain. In the case of micro-rolling, the strain gradient is remarkable at the exit section where the actual reduction of the rolling finishes and subsequently strong work hardening take places at the section. This results in a considerable increase in rolling force. Rolling force with the strain gradient plasticity considered in analysis increases by 20% compared to that with conventional plasticity theory.
This study was carried out as basic researches to develop the leaf vegetable harvester. This study was conducted to investigate physical and rheological properties of bundled leaf vegetables with stem (Chinese leek, Crown daisy and Chamnamul) as test materials held and picked-up by a machine. Stress-strain behavior, stress relaxation, and strain recovery for the bundled materials were analyzed using simple Maxwell model. Physical and rheological properties of the materials were investigated by measuring rupture load, deformation and stress experimentally. Also, strain recovery time when unloading was measured using super high speed camera. Recorded recovery time for stress-strain behavior was0.026 s for Chinese leek with liner strain recovery, 0.046 s for Crown daisy and 0.05 s for Chamnamul with non-linear strain recovery. Furthermore, the strain recovery time for permanent deformation was 0.026 s, 0.046 s, and 0.05 s for Chinese Leek, Crown daisy and Chamnamul, respectively. Finally, strain recovery time and strain recovery ratio for the test materials were 0.17 s, 60.4% in Chinese leek, 0.12 s, 55.3% in Crown daisy, 0.15 s, 58.7% in Chamnamul. Here strain recovery time means that how fast the test materials are recovered from initial deformation and strain recovery ratio means how much the test materials are recovered from initial deformation. The above results show that the test materials can be held enough and moved by the belts.
In-situ neutron diffraction has been employed to examine the effect of strain path on lattice strain evolution during monotonic and cyclic tension in an extruded Mg-8.5wt.%Al alloy. In the cyclic tension test, the maximum applied stress increased with cycle number. Lattice strain data were acquired for three grain orientations, characterized by the plane normal to the stress axis. The lattice strain in the hard {10.0} orientation, which is unfavorably oriented for both basal slip and {10.2} extension twinning, evolved linearly throughout both tests during loading and unloading. The {00.2} orientation exhibited significant relaxation associated with {10.2} extension twinning. Coupled with a linear lattice strain unloading behavior, this relaxation led to increasingly compressive residual strains in the {00.2} orientation with increasing cycle number. The {10.1} orientation is favorably oriented for basal slip, and thus showed a soft grain behavior. Microyielding occurred in the monotonic tension test and in all cycles of the cyclic test at an applied stress of ~50 MPa, indicating that strain hardening in this orientation was not completely stable from one cycle to the next. The lattice strain unloading behavior was linear in the {10.1} orientation, leading to a compressive residual strain after every cycle, which, however, did not increase systematically from one cycle to the next as in the {00.2} orientation.
Stress relaxation tests have been performed under five different tensile strain levels and five different bending strain levels. Three different theoretical models have been developed based on four-element Burger's model, viscoelastic theory and viscous-viscoelastic theory. Experimental data were used to obtain parameters of the models and to verify accuracy of the models. Among the three theoretical models developed in this study, three-integral model (Model 3) based on viscous-viscoelastic theory showed the most exact estimations of stress relaxation under both tensile and bending strains and their correlation coefficients were greater than 0.99 for all the strain levels. Model 1 showed little initial stress relaxation. Model 2 showed excessive initial relaxation and, then, no relaxation after about 20 minute of strain application. Stress retention under strain decreased as strain increased, which means increased stress relaxation as strain increases. When the strain level was less than proportional limit, the effect of strain level on stress relaxation was not clearly shown. However, this effect was increased as strain level increased when strain level was greater than proportional limit.
In general, the drawing process is performed in a multi-pass to meet the required shape and cross section. In the drawn material, the surface strain is relatively higher than the center due to the direct contact with the die. Therefore, a non-uniform strain distribution appears in the surface of the material where the strain is concentrated and the center having a relatively low strain, thus it is difficult to predict the strain in the drawn material. In this study, the non-uniform strain distribution was evaluated using a finite element analysis and the non-uniform strain distribution model based on the upper bound method. In addition, the relationship between the hardness and the strain was established through a simple compression test to evaluate the distribution of the strain in the experimentally multi-pass drawn bar.
The dislocation density in strain-hardened Alloy 690 was analyzed using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to study the relationship between the local plastic strain and susceptibility to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) in nuclear power plants. The test material was cold-rolled at various thickness reduction ratios from 10% to 40% to simulate the strain-hardening condition of plant components. The dislocation densities were measured at grain boundaries (GB) and in grain interiors of strain-hardened specimens from STEM images. The dislocation density in the grain interior monotonically increased as the strain-hardening proceeded, while the dislocation density at the GB increased with strain-hardening up to 20% but slightly decreases upon further deformation to 40%. The decreased dislocation density at the GB was attributed to the formation of deformation twins. After the PWSCC growth test of strain-hardened Alloy 690, the fraction of intergranular (IG) fracture was obtained from fractography. In contrast to the change in the dislocation density with strain-hardening, the fraction of IG fracture increased remarkably when strain-hardened over 20%. From the results, it was suggested that the PWSCC growth behavior of strain-hardened Alloy 690 not only depends on the dislocation density, but also on the microstructural defects at the GB.

Recent experimental studies have been shown that strain gages can be employed to determine either static or dynamic stress intensity factors $K_{I}$ wiht relatively simple experiments. However, it does not usually provide a reliable value of stress intensity factor because of local yielding and limited regions for strain gage placement at the vicinity of the crack tip. This paper attempted to define a valid region and to indicate procedures for locating and orienting the strain gage to determine static toughness $K_{Is}$ accurately form one strain gage readings with respect to varying loadings. The strain gage methods was used for compact tension specimens made of Polycarbonate and PMMA(polymethyl methacrylate). Series expansions of the static and dynamic strain fields are applied. Strain gage orientation and location are then studied to optimize the strain response. Especially, in the dynamic experiment, the specimen employed is an oversized Charpy V-notch specimen which has been modified to provide significant constraint with a large elevation of the flow stress. The impact behavior of the specimen is monitored by placing strain gage near the crack tip. The dynamic toughness $K_{Id}$ is determined from the strain time traces of this gage.e.
