  • A simple analytical approach for stability assessment of underground storage caverns against ground uplift of overburden rock above the rock caverns for high pressurized fluid such as compressed air energy storage (CAES) and compressed natural gas (CNG) was developed. In the developed approach, we assumed that failure plane of the overburden is straight upward to ground surface, and factor of safety can be calculated from a limit equilibrium analysis in terms of this cylindrical shape failure model. The frictional resisting force on the failure plane was estimated by Hoek-Brown strength criterion which replaces with Mohr-Coulomb criterion such that both intact rock strength and rock mass conditions can be considered in the current approach. We carried out a parametric sensitivity analysis of strength parameters under various rock mass conditions and demonstrated that the factor of safety againt ground uplift was more sensitive to Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion rather than Hoek-Brown criterion.

  • We propose a novel metal-waveguide structure for sustaining long-range surface-plasmon-polaritons (LRSPP). The LRSPP waveguides are composed basically of two asymmetric metal layers: a very thin, finite-width metal strip on top of a metal slab with a dielectric gap in between them. Mode cut-off of LRSPPs excited on the double-metal waveguides is characterized by consistently investigating their dispersion relations and mode profiles. We also confirm experimentally the existence of low-loss, well-confined LRSPP modes by measuring far-field outputs emerging from an edge of the asymmetric double-metal waveguides. In the experiment, we have fabricated several types of SPP waveguide devices including straight lines, S-bend, and Y-branch consisting of gold strips (20 nm-thick, $5{\mu}m$-wide). Overall propagation loss of the proposed double-metal waveguides is quite comparable to that of single metal-strip waveguides, in addition the mode sizes can be tuned by increasing the core-insulator gap between the metal layers to get a higher coupling efficiency with a single-mode fiber in telecom wavelength. The proposed LRSPP waveguides may open up realization of SPP-waveguide sensors or nonlinear SPP-devices by replacing the core-insulator with a bio-fluid or a nonlinear medium.

  • A rectangular straight microchannel, integrated with the resistance temperature detectors(RTDs) for temperature sensing and a micro-heater for generating the Temperature gradient along the channel, was fabricated. Its dimension is 57${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$(H)$\times$200${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$(W)$\times$48,050${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$(L), and RTDs were placed at the inner-channel wall. Si wafer was used as a substrate. For the fabrication of RTDs, 5300$\AA$ thick Pt/Ti layer was sputtered on a Pyrex glass wafer. Finally, the glass wafer was bonded with Si wafer by anodic bonding, so that the RTDs are located inside the microchannel. Temperature coefficient of resistance(TCR) values of the fabricated Pt-RTDs were 2800~2950ppm$^{\circ}C$ and the variation of TCR value In the range of O~10$0^{\circ}C$ was less than 0.3%. Therefore, it was proved that the fabricated Pt-RTDs without annealing were excellent as temperature sensors. The temperature distribution in the microchannel was investigated as a function of mass flow rate and heating power. The temperature increase rate diminished with decreasing the applied power and increasing the mass flow rate. It was confirmed from the comparison with the simulation results that the temperature measured inside the microchannel is more accurate than measuring the temperature measured at the outer wall. The proposed temperature sensing method and microchannel are expected to be useful in microfluidics researches.

  • This study investigated the swirling flow fields of a gun-type gas burner (GTGB) without a combustion chamber under cold flow conditions. Three velocity components and the static pressure were measured with a straight-type five-hole pressure probe (GHPP) using a non-nulling calibration method and compared with the results of an X-type hot-wire probe (X-probe) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The GHPP measured the velocity and static pressure for the swirling flow of the central region of the GTGB better than the X-probe but produced slightly worse results than the CFD.

  • In this study, we perform a 3D CFD conjugate analysis according to the shape of the foil ramp of the air foil thrust bearing, analyze the flow characteristics inside the bearing, and compare the results corresponding to the two shapes. Air has a lower viscosity than lubricating oil. Therefore, the thrust runner of the bearing must rotate at high speed to support the load. The gap between thrust runner and foil is significantly smaller than that of the oil bearing. Hence, it is crucial to analyze the complex flow characteristics inside the bearing to predict the complex flow inside the bearing and performance of the bearing. In addition, flow characteristics may appear differently depending on the ramp shape of the bearing foil, which may affect bearing performance. In this study, we numerically analyze the main flow path of air flowing into the bearing and the secondary flow path used for cooling the bearing using the commercial CFD software ANSYS CFX and compare the flow characteristics for straight and curved foil ramp shapes. Notably, there is a difference in the speed of the flowing air according to the shape of the ramp, which affects the bearing performance.

  • Cell separation from a heterogenous mixture sample is an essential process for downstream analysis in biological, chemical, and clinical applications. This study demonstrates an integrated hybrid device of the viscoelastic focusing in a straight rectangular channel and subsequent size-based separation using acoustophoresis to attain high efficiency and separation tunability. For particle pre-alignment in a viscoelastic fluid, the flow rate higher than 10 μl/min was required. Surface acoustic wave-based lateral migration of particles with different sizes (13 and 27 ㎛) was examined at various applied voltages and flow rate conditions. Therefore, the flow rate of 100 μl/min and the applied voltage of 20 Vpp can be used for size-based particle separation.

  • Two-layered fluid with sloping bottom and top(${\beta}$-effect) in rigid cylinder is put on the rotating table. To drive the lower-layer motion in "the Sverdrup type" flow external fluid is pumped into the lower-layer. By introducing inlet-outlet system in the upper-layer, an analogy to the Tsushima Tsugaru, Soya of the East Sea has been tested. The position of the inlet-outlet system and the difference between the strength of inlet or outlet flow are changed to see the effects of the wind stress on the upper-layer. The northern part of inflow toward the outlet may be interpreted roughly as the position of the polar front in the East Sea. Experimental observations have revealed that the inflow flows along the western boundary before it separates into the interior and flows straight toward the outlet position. However, the wind effect is imposed upon the upper-layer, the western boundary flow branches into two parts of which one flows along the boundary and the other flows into the interior under the influence of negative wind stress curl, while southward western boundary flow seems to block the flow and deflect it to the interior. The changes in the position of inlet-outlet system produce more significant changes in flow pattern in that cyclonic flow in the north controls the northern extent of the polar front by deflecting the northward interior motion toward the west(outlet). Interface displacement which depends strongly on the velocity difference between two layers seems to play crucial role in terms of the path of upper-layer flow, particularity, the inflow.

  • Amethysts in Eonyang Granite of Woolju-Kun, Kyungnam Province are frequently parallelly grown on top of preexisting smoky quartz crystallized on milky and colorless quartz crystals, which, as a whole, resemble "mushroom" in outer appearance. Fluid inclusions in the amethysts may be grouped into (1) gaseous inclusions (G>L), (2) liquid inclusions (L>G), (3) $L_{CO_2}$-bearing inclusions (L+G+$L_{CO_2}$), (4) halite-bearing inclusions (L+G+halite), (5) multiphase inclusions (L+G+halite+sylvite${\pm}$opaque mineral). In addition, euhedral K-feldspars and acicular hematite crystals are included in colorless-milky quartz and deep purple-red quartz, respectively. Filling temperatures of each type of fluid inclusions were measured as follows: $320{\sim}560^{\circ}C$ for gaseous inclusions; $100{\sim}290^{\circ}C$ for liquid inclusions; $200{\sim}310^{\circ}C$ for $L_{CO_2}$-bearing inclusions; $300{\sim}430^{\circ}C$ for halite-bearing inclusions; and $370{\sim}430^{\circ}C$ for polyphase inclusions. The finished-gem amethysts from Eonyang may be distinguished from Brazilian amethysts by the difference in filling degree of gaseous inclusions by the presence of hematite aciculae, and of $L_{CO_2}$-bearing inclusions, and also by the absence of Zebra-striation structure. They may also be differentiated from synthetic amethysts by presence of straight color banding, solid inclusions, and $L_{CO_2}$-bearing inclusions which are not found in synthetic materials.

  • Fine-grained peridotite xenoliths are rarely trapped in the basaltic rocks from the southeastern part of Jeju Island. Based on textural characteristics of the constituent phases showing uniform-sized, fine-grained tabular to mosaic grains with rare porphyroclastic relics, the studied samples can be defined as fine-grained, foliated porphyroclastic peridotites (FPP). Almost no significant difference among the FPPs in textures and major element compositions implies that the FPPs were derived from a structural domain, experiencing similar deformation events and deformation patterns. Moreover, the bimodal distribution with kink-banded porphyroclasts ($2{\sim}3mm$) and stain-free neoblasts ($200{\sim}300{\mu}m$), straight to gently curved grain boundaries with triple junctions, interstitial melt pockets, and microstructures for migrating grain boundary suggest that the studied samples went through dynamic recrystallization (${\pm}$ static recrystallization) in the presence of melt/fluid movement along foliation planes. No notable difference between the FPP and common protogranular xenoliths in major element compositions and geochemical evolution also implies that the FPP and protogranular xenoliths were from a similar horizon. Thus, the textural and geochemical characteristics of the FPPs reflects deformation events occurred at a localized and narrow zone within the lithospheric mantle beneath the Jeju Island. Although further detailed studies are necessary to define deformation events, the most possible process which could trigger deformation in the FPP in the rigid upper mantle was the ascending basaltic magma forming high-stress deformation zones. The suggested high-stress deformation zones in the lithosphere beneath the Jeju Island may be produced by paleo-faulting events related to the ascent of basalt magma before Jeju Island was formed.

  • This study was performed to obtain the basic data which can be applied to the use of concretes. The data was based on the properties of concrectes depending upon water-cement ratios and addings to compare those of plain concrete. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. In case the proper quantity of water reducing agent was added, unit weight of water is decreased to 12.9% with WR-LG of water reducing set standarding agent and to 8.6% with HF-SP of high fluid agent and to 17.2% with AH-WR of water reducing set accelerating agent, respectively, as compared with plain concrete. With the increase of water reducing agent content unit weight of water was greatly decreased. 2. The adding rate of water reducing agent which produce maximum strength was 0.2% with WR-LG and 0.4% with HF-SP and AH-WR, respectively. The increasing rates of strengths were showed that WR-LG is 24.1% and that HF-SP is 41.8% and that AH-WR is 43.3%, respectively, as compared with plain concrete. 3. The correlations between compressive and tensile strength were highly significant as a straight line. the multiple regression equations of compressive and tensile strength were computed with the variables of curing age and addition of water reducing agent. They were highly significant. 4. In case the proper quantity of water reducing agent was added, the correlations between water-cement ratio and compressive strength were highly significant as a straight line. The increasing rates of strength were showed higher than the decreasing rates of water cement-ratio.
