  • The surges caused by the typhoon of Korea are analysed in Kwangyang Bay. The deviations of the high water level were $74{\sim}185cm$ and the maximum deviations of the water level (maximum surges) were $151{\sim}240cm$ in Kwangyang Bay during the typhoon. The major parameters of the maximum deviations of the water level are as follows : Analysis shows that the pressure drop increased the sea level by $43{\sim}59cm$, the flood of the Sumjin River by $4{\sim}5cm$ and the external surge propagation and wind setup by $97{\sim}192cm$.

  • Post-Katrina investigations revealed that most earthen levee damage occurred on the levee crest and landward-side slope as a result of either wave overtopping, storm surge overflow, or a combination of both. In this paper, combined wave overtopping and storm surge overflow of a levee embankment strengthened with high performance turf reinforcement mat (HPTRM) system was studied in a purely Lagrangian and meshless approach, two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model. After the SPH model is calibrated with full-scale overtopping test results, the overtopping discharge, flow thickness, flow velocity, average overtopping velocity, shear stress, and soil erosion rate are calculated. New equations are developed for average overtopping discharge. The shear stresses on landward-side slope are calculated and the characteristics of soil loss are given. Equations are also provided to estimate soil loss rate. The range of the application of these equations is discussed.

  • A numerical simulation has been performed on the generation of the coastal cliff which lies as the distinct boundary between the beach and the hinterland. As a result of storm surge, it is known that the steeper the initial beach slope, the larger the generation of the coastal cliff. The rise of water level added the mean water level accelerates the generation of the coastal cliff. In addition, the longshore distribution of the incident wave height is one factor that bring about the generation of the non-uniform coastal cliff in longshore direction. Therefore this study will be able to use for expecting the formation and erosion of coastal cliff in sand beach.

  • Our country is suffering from many human victims and property damages caused to occur great and small tidal waves in southern areas every year. Even though there were progressing many researches for storm surges, it was required more researches for detection of tidal wave and prevention system of its which can be applied in practical living fields. In this paper, we propose the disaster prevention system that can approximately detect a dangerousness of coast flooding and number of overtopping per time based on images of CCTV considering actual field application. And if it is detected a hazard of flooding of coast, the proposed detection system for tidal wave based GIS is quickly informed the areas of flooding to manager. The analyzing results of CCTV image of this proposed are derived from difference images between photos of fine day and photos or videos which are taken for the typhoon which is called "DIANMU" at our laboratory.

  • This study analyzed a hydrodynamic behavior using the EFDC model (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) in the downstream of the Nakdong River in the case of a storm surge and a localized torrential rainfall caused by a major typhoon, and the sea level rise caused by global warming. The study area is selected Gaduk island with the lower boundary and Jindong with the upper boundary, to investigate the total river hydrodynamic behavior including the estuary. In order to verify this numerical model, the calculated results was compared with the observed stage at each gauging point in case of the storm rainfall in 2003 and 2006. From the results, it was shown that the numerical model(EFDC) has high accuracy and is useful in simulating more various cases.

  • According to a paper on estimating and forecasting the size of the pet-related industry published in 2018, 26.9% of the nation's pet-owned households were in their 30s and one-person households, consisting only of couples, as of 2015. Regarding the social increase in single-person households and double-income couples, it is believed that the surge in neglect time and lack of training time that pets do not want is a problem. This paper conducted the development of hardware and software products for the training and management of companion animals using Lego Mind Storm. Lego mind Storm is equipped with a variety of sensors and can produce equipment to train or care pets with simple programming through easy assembly and visual scripting. It is also expected that switching to new equipment will be easy because it is well modularized. We hope that this study will help the training and management of pets when the expansion of the pet market becomes active through this study.

  • The city of Mokpo suffers lowland inundation damages by sea water flooding even without harsh weather like a typhoon, due to the low level urban infrastructure facilities, oceanic environmental changes by constructions of seadike/seawall and sea level rise caused by global warming. This study performs constructing the simulation system which employs the MIKE21 software. And the system is applied to several typhoon- induced surges which had resulted in inundation at Mokpo. Virtual situation of flooding is simulated in case 59 cm of surge height, which had been occurred actually by RUSA(0215), coincides with Approx. H.H.W. Then the water level of 545 cm corresponds to the extreme high water level(544 cm) for 10 year return period after the construction of Geumho seawall. The results show rapid and broad inundation at Inner-Port, requiring additional preparations for flood protections.

  • Recently huge typhoons had attacked to the coastal waters in Korea and caused disastrous casualties in those area. There are some discussions on correction to the design parameters for the coastal structures. Wave transformation computations with the extreme waves are of value in planning and constructing engineering works, especially in coastal regions. Prediction of typhoon surge elevations is based primarily on the use of a numerical model in this study, since it is difficult to study these events in real time or with use of physical models. Wave prediction with a two dimensional numerical model for a site with complicated coastal lines and structures at the period of typhoon 'Maemi' is discussed. In order to input parameters for the extreme wave conditions, we analyzed the observed and predicted typhoon data. Finally we applied the model discussed above to the storm surge and extreme wave problem at Busan Harbor, the southeast coast of Korea. Effects of water level variation and transformation of the extreme waves in relation with the flooding in coastal waters interested are analyzed. We then mack an attempt to presen a basic hazard map for the corresponding site.
