Sharing On-line Storage with Various Flat Forms of Information Devices

  • In this paper, we propose a new storage system architecture called as U-Storage (ubiquitous storage system). U-Storage allows a user to access an on-line storage with any type of information devices that are able to connect to internet. The on-line storage is virtualized to the user's information devices as a local hard disk or a memory card by our U-Storage. With devices supporting U-Storage, users can read and write their data anytime and anywhere without downloading and uploading operation.

  • Demand for electricity is increasing annually. Especially, the daytime demand grawth shows higher than any other time period. So the big difference between maximum and minimum electrical demand becomes another important problem to be solved. The Battery Energy Storage System is chosen as one of the solutions among the sevral methods. The purpose of utilization of Battery Energy Storage System is to improve the daily load factor. Also, Battery Energy Storage System may be used for the load levelling or the load shifting as well as the spinning reserve. Up to now, only the pumped hydro power plant system has been operated on the commercial basis, but this system has so many constraints such as site, environmental effects, construction period, ect. Being considered current electrical power situation the development of electric storage system is in need latly. Among the various electric storage systems, Battery Energy System is chosen with the top priority because it has sevral merits to cover such as the short construction period, the demand site installation, and the food environmental characteristics.

플라스틱병을 이용한 빙축시스템의 열역학적 성능에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Thermodynamic Performance of Plastic Bottle Ice Storage System)

  • This paper presents an anlaysis on the thermodynamic performance of ice storage system. The primary interest in this work is the exergetic efficiency of the system. The ice storage system considered here is the capsule type system with the waste plastic bottle being used as a capsule. To examine the characteristics of irreversibility production and exergetic efficiency in detail the ice storage system to be analyzed has been separated from the refrigerator in this analysis. The analysis is based on the lumped model with 3 uniform temperatures. The results indicate that 3 dimensionless parameters can describe the exergetic efficiency of the system, from which the characteristics of irreversibilities and the ranges of these parameters to ensure the reasonable performance of the system can be found. Experiments also have been performed to demonstrate the feasibility of such a system. This analysis only shows the performance of ice storage side, with the refrigeration side excluded. However, the results can be interpreted as a total performance if the refrigerator coupled with the ice storage system operatres reversibly.

A Study on Optimal Operation Strategy for Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle Based on Hybrid Energy Storage System

  • This paper proposed an optimal operation strategy for a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) with a lithium-ion battery and lead-acid battery for mild hybrid electric vehicles (mild HEVs). The proposed mild HEV system is targeted to mount the electric motor and the battery to a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle. Because the proposed mild HEV includes the motor and energy storage device of small capacity, the system focuses on low system cost and small size. To overcome these limitations, it is necessary to use a lead acid battery which is used for a vehicle. Thus, it is possible to use more energy using HESS with a lithium battery and a lead storage battery. The HESS, which combines the lithium-ion battery and the secondary battery in parallel, can achieve better performance by using the two types of energy storage systems with different characteristics. However, the system requires an operation strategy because accurate and selective control of the batteries for each situation is necessary. In this paper, an optimal operation strategy is proposed considering characteristics of each energy storage system, state-of-charge (SOC), bidirectional converters, the desired output power, and driving conditions in the mild HEV system. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated through several case studies with respect to energy capacity, SOC, battery characteristic, and system efficiency.

  • For the efficient use of thermal energy and its related equipments, optimal energy in view of quality and quantity should be timely provided. The core of thermal energy storage technology deals with an energy efficiency for effective energy storage and supply. The relative importance of thermal energy storage technology has been underestimated so far, and the specific projects on this filed have been performed intermittently. For the efficient and systematic approach of the energy supply system projects on thermal energy storage technology, we conduct the survey on the current status of this field. Firstly, classify into the thermal energy storage and describing the recent research for each system. The necessity and importance of thermal energy storage technology is identified through this study. It reveals that the thermal energy storage is the mandatory technology to solve the difference of supply and demand in thermal loads. It would greatly contribute to the combined heat and power(CHP) system. The urgent technologies for the commercial value and the core technologies for the CHP system are classified with this study.

캡슐형 빙축열시스템에 대한 운전 시뮬레이션 및 에너지비용 분석 (Simulation and Energy Cost Calculation of Encapsulated Ice Storage System)

  • Ice storage systems are used to shift the peak load in day time into night time in summer. This paper describes a system simulation of partial ice storage system composed of an encapsulated ice storage tank, a screw compressor chiller, a heat exchanger, and a brine pump. For the system simulation, a one-dimensional model of ice storage tank is developed and validated by comparison with the performance data from measurements of an ice storage tank installed at a building. The control strategies considered in this study are chiller priority and storage priority being used commercially. The system is simulated with design cooling load of 600 RT peak load in design day and with off-design day cooling load, and the electric energy costs of the two control strategies for the same system size are compared. As a result of calculation, the energy consumption in a week for storage priority is higher than that for chiller priority control. However due to lower cost of night electric charge rate, energy cost for storage priority control is lower than chiller priority.

  • Mathematical modeling and performance simulation results were shown for the solar thermal storage system which used heat pipe. The thermal storage system was composed of thermal storage tank and charging/discharging heat exchanger with one by the heat pipes. Heat pipe heat exchanger was attached to system, and could carry out charging and discharging to thermal storage tank at the same time. Height of the thermal storage tank was 600 mm, and that of the charging/discharging heat exchanger was 400 mm. Length of the heat pipe was the same as the total height of thermal storage system, and outer and inner diameter were 25.4 mm(O.D.) and 21.4 mm(I.D.) respectively. Diameter of the circular was 43 mm(O.D.), and fin geometries were considered as the design parameters. High temperature phase change material(PCM), $KNO_3$ and low temperature PCM, $LINO_3$ were charged to storage tank to adjust working temperature. Total size of thermal storage system able to get heat capacity more than 500 kW was calculated and the results were shown in this study. Number of heat pipe was required more than maximum 500, and total length of thermal storage system was calculated to the more than maximum 3 m at various condition.

겨울철 냉기를 이용한 벼의 저온저장 (II) - 빈상부 쿨링시스템을 이용한 냉각 벼의 저온저장 특성 - (Low Temperature Storage of Rough Rice Using Cold-Air in Winter (II) - Low Temperature Storage Characteristics of Rough Rice Using a Cooling System in the Top of a Bin -)

  • Storage rough rice in low temperature using the winter cold air avoids rough rice temperature increase which happens from early May, and this is possible by installing a cooling system in the top of a bin, the room between top rice level and bin ceiling. The research objective is to establish low temperature rough rice storage technique, furnishing winter cold air to rough rice, by investigating the cooling system potential of maintaining low rough rice temperature and by analyzing rough rice storage characteristics over a storage period. The rough rice storage characteristics were evaluated from January to August 2003, using a storage and dry bin of 400-ton capacity. Results of this research are as follows: Cooling bin using the cooling system in the top of the bin maintained the rice temperature less than 15$^{\circ}C$ in entire portions in August. Moisture contents and germination rates of rough rice were decreased over the storage period, on the other hand, the rough rice stored in the ambient temperature bin had relatively lower moisture contents and germination rates to compare with the bin using winter cold air. Crack ratio and acid value of brown rice in the ambient temperature bin storage had increased more than the cooling bin storage. The result indicates that the storage bin using winter cold air and the cooling system maintains moisture content and germination of rice, minimizes cracked kernel and acid value, and preserves rice quality as well.

  • High performance and reliability of the storage system to handle a very large amount of data has been become very important. Many techniques have been applied on the various application systems to establish very large capacity storage that satisfy the requirement of high I/O speed and physical or logical failure protection. We applied RAID and LVM to construct a storage system for the global data center which needs a very reliable large capacity storage system. The storage system is successfully established and equipped on the latest Linux application server.

  • Korean traditional Ondol with the sensible heat storage medium has been for a long time used as residential heating system, in these days the concrete Ondol without the heat storage medium was realized as the heating system in the private houses and the apartments. This floor heating system is good for our health. But the concrete Ondol is not desirable for the energy saving and for the maintenance of comfortable room temperature because the heat storage medium is not employed in the concrete Ondol. And as the hot water circulating pipes ate buried under the the concrete floor, the concrete Ondol system has some kind of problems to be improved. Therefore the new type of Ondol system was developed in this study. And the new Ondol was consisted of latent heat storage material as heat storage medium with a great heat capacity and bioceramics as medium to maintain comfortable room temperature. In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of latent heat storage-bioceramic Ondol was analyzed theoretically.
