  • In this work, wave run-up heights and resultant wave forces on a vertical revetment due to tsunami (solitary wave) are investigated numerically using a numerical wave tank model called CADMAS-SURF (CDIT, 2001. Research and Development of Numerical Wave Channel (CADMAS-SURF). CDIT library, No. 12, Japan.), which is based on a 2-D Navier-Stokes solver, coupled to a volume of fluid (VOF) method. The third order approximate solution (Fenton, 1972. A ninth-order solution for the solitary wave. J. of Fluid Mech., Vol. 53, No.2, pp.257-271) is used to generate solitary waves and implemented in original CADMAS-SURF code. Numerical results of the wave profiles and forces are in good agreements with available experimental data. Using the numerical results, the regression curves determined from the least-square analysis are proposed, which can be used to determine the maximum wave run-up height and force on a vertical revetment due to tsunami. In addition, the capability of CADMAS-SURF is demonstrated for tsunami wave forces acting on an onshore structure using various configuration computations including the variations of the crown heights of the vertical wall and the position of the onshore structure. Based on the numerical results such as water level, velocity field and wave force, the direct effects of tsunami on an onshore structure are discussed.

  • In this study, the solitary wave-induced tsunami force acting on an onshore bridges in coastal area was numerically modelled by means of TWOPM-3D based on Navier-Stokes solver and VOF method which can track free surface effectively. The validity of numerical analysis was verified by comparing the experimental tsunami bore force acting on vertical wall and column structure. In particular, the characteristics of tsunami force with the changing tsunami intensity were surveyed through numerical experiments. The availability of 3-dimensional numerical analysis was reviewed through the comparison between the existing numerical results and design criteria for each drag force coefficient by applying Morison equation considering only drag force. As reasonable and high-precision estimation method of tsunami force, it was suggested to apply the estimation method taking drag and inertial force into consideration at the same time.

  • In the present paper, flow characteristics and free surface waves generated by a submerged hydrofoil advancing with an uniform speed are calculated. Using a numerical method based on a MAC(Marker And Cell) method, the Navier-Stokes and the continuity equations are solved to simulate flow fields around the hydrofoil. Computations are carried out in a rectangular grid system in which grids are concentrated near the foil and the free surface to improve numerical accuracies. Viscous flow phenomenas including pressure distributions are computed. Moreover, the influences of submerged depths upon the generated wave profiles and the wave breaking phenomena are also investigated. Experiments are performed at the towing tank of Inha University to measure free surface wave elevations due to the advancing hydrofoil. The computational results are compared with the present and the other available experimental data to show the accuracy of the numerical method developed.

  • In this research a numerical simulation method is developed for moving body in free surface flows using fixed staggered rectangular grid system. The non-linear free surface near the body is defined by marker-density method. The body boundary is defined by line segment connecting the points where the body surface and grid line meet. Continuity equation and Navier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations and the equations are coupled with two-step projection method. The velocities and pressures of body boundary and free surface cells are calculated with simultaneous iterative method. To treat a body movement in a fixed grid system, the volume displaced by moving body is added to the divergence of the body boundary cell. For the verification of the present numerical method. vortex shedding period of advancing cylinder is calculated and the period is compared with existing experiment results. Moreover, added mass and damping coefficients of a vertically excited box are calculated and the computed results are compared with published experiment results. Impulsive pressure and water level variation due to sloshing phenomenon are simulated and the results are compared with published experiment results. Varying the plunger shape, the waves generated by plunging type wave maker are compared with the 2nd order Stokes wave theory The plunger shape generating the wave that shows the best agreement with the theory is represented.

  • Overexpanded flow of an axisymmetric thruster nozzle is numerically simulated to investigate effects of nozzle pressure ratio (NPR) on the shock structure and thrust performance. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model are solved utilizing FLUENT solver. As the NPR is raised, thrust performance monotonically increases with the shock structure and flow-separation point being pushed toward the nozzle exit. It is also discussed that the flow structure at nozzle-exit plane which is immediately affected by a position of nozzle-interior shocks and expansion waves, has strong influence upon the thrust performance of thruster nozzle.

  • Two-dimensional nonlinear free-surface wave problems are analyzed with consideration of viscosity. Navier-Stokes equation and continuity equation are solved by the application of Finite Analytic Method, and MAC scheme is used far the treatment of free surface. Surface tension effect is also considered and laminar flow is assumed. The free-surface waves in shallow water, the flows around a vortex-pair with free surface and the wave ahead of a rectangular body are simulated to test the present numerical scheme. In the shallow water problem, viscous effect due to the friction on the bottom is observed. In the second problem, the approach of a vortex-pair to the free surface is simulated to examine the interaction of vortex-pair with the free surface. In the third problem, the wave ahead of a semi-infinite floating body is simulated.

  • In the present study, we proposed a new numerical wave tank model to analyze the vertical tension-leg circular floating bodies, using a 2-D Navier-Stokes solver. An IBM(Immersed Boundary Method) capable of handling interactions between waves and moving structures with complex geometry on a standard regular Cartesian grid system is coupled to the VOF(Volume of Fluid) method for tracking the free surface. Present numerical results for the motions of the floating body were compared with existing experimental data as well as numerical results based on FAVOR(Fractional Area Volume Obstacle Representation) algorithm. For detailed examinations of the present model, the additional hydraulic experiments for floating motions and free surface transformations were conducted. Further, the versatility of the proposed numerical model was verified via the numerical and physical experiments for the general rectangular floating bodies. Numerical results were compared with experiments and good agreement was archived.

  • Oscillating Water Column (OWC) device has been widely employed in the wave energy conversion. Wave Focusing Device (WFD) is proposed to be helpful for improving the operating performance of OWC chamber. In the present paper, a Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) using two-phase VOF model is utilized to simulate the generation and propagation of incident regular waves, water column oscillation inside the chamber. The NWT consists of the continuity equation, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and two-phase VOF functions. The standard k- turbulence model, the finite volume method, NITA-PISO algorithm and dynamic mesh technique are employed. Effects of WFD on the operating performance of OWC chamber are investigated numerically.

  • In order to investigate the flows with shock wave in branch, 108$^{\circ}$ elbow and T-junction of the IRWST system of standard Korean nuclear reactor, detail time dependent behaviors of unsteady flow with shock wave, vortex and so on are obtained by numerical method using compressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. At first, the complex flow including the incident and reflected shock waves, vortex and expansion waves which are generated at the corner of T-junction is calculated by the commercial code of FLUENT6 and is compared with the experimental result to obtain the validation of numerical method. Then the flow fields in above mentioned units are analyzed by numerical method of [mite volume method. In numerical analysis, the distributions of flow properties with the moving of shock wave and the forces acting on the wall of each unit which can be used to calculate the size of supporting structure in future are calculated specially. It is found that the initial shock wave of normal type is re-established its type from an oblique one having the same strength of the initial shock wave at the 4 times hydraulic diameters of downstream from the branch point of each unit. Finally, it is turned out that the maximum force acting on the pipe wall becomes in order of the T-junction, 108$^{\circ}$ elbow and branch in magnitude, respectively.

  • A complete solution, exact to second-order, for wave motion forced by a hinged-wavemaker of variable-draft is presented. A solution for a piston type wavemaker is also obtained as a special case of a hinged-wavemaker. The laboratory waves generated by a plane wave board are shown to be composed of two components; viz., a Stokes second-order wave and a second-harnomic free wave which travels at a different speed. The amplitude of the second-harmonic free wave is relatively large in shallow water and decreases to less than 10% of the amplitude of the primary wave in deep water. Wavemakers with relatively deeper draft (i.e., hinged near the bottom) generate the free waves of smaller amplitude in shallow and intermediate water depths than the wavemakers with shallow draft. However, the opposite is predicted by theory in deep water.
