The present work is an experimental and analytical study on a flexible disk rotating close to a rigid rotating disk in open air. In the analytical study, the air flow in the gap between the flexible disk and the rigid disk is modeled using Navier-Stokes and continuity equations while the flexible disk is modeled using the linear plate theory. The flow equations are discretized using the cell centered finite volume method (FVM) and solved numerically with semi-implicit pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE algorithm). The spatial terms in the disk equation are discretized using the finite difference method (FDM) and the time integration is performed using fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. An experimental test-rig is designed to investigate the dynamics of the flexible disk when rotating close to a co-rotating, a counter-rotating and a fixed rigid disk, which works as a stabilizer. The effects of rotational speed, initial gap height and inlet-hole radius on the flexible disk displacement and its vibration amplitude are investigated experimentally for the different types of stabilizer. Finally, the analytical and experimental results are compared.
Three-dimensional dynamic stall over an oscillating wing has been analyzed by using a compressible Navier-Stokes code. The code solved the thin-layer Navirer-Stokes equations with a second-order time accuracy for a semispan wing with 0.3048m chord, a NACA 0015 airfoil section, and zero twist Computations were made for a freestream Mach number of 0.29, a chord Reynolds number of 1.95$\times$10(sup)6 and a reduced frequency equal to 0.1. Numerical results were compared with experimental data which include the hysteresis of lift, drag and moment at various wing span. The comparison reveals the quantitative as well as qualitative nature of the three-dimensional dynamic stall.
In a MEMS(micro-electro mechanical system), the fluid may slip near the surface of a solid and have a discontinuous temperature profile. A numerical prediction in this slip flow region can provide a reasonable guide for the design and fabrication of micro devices. The compressible Navier-Stokes equation with Maxwell/smoluchowski boundary condition is solved for two simple systems; couette flow and pressure driven flow in a long channel. We found that the couette flow could be regarded as an incompressible system in low speed regions. For the pressure driven flow system, we observed nonlinear distribution of pressure in the long channel and numerical results showed a good agreement with the experimental results.
The airfoil design optimization procedures based on the Navier-Stokes equations were developed, This procedure enables more realistic and practical transonic airfoil designs. The modified Hicks-Henne functions were used to generate the shape of airfoils. Five Hick-Henne functions were used to design upper surface of airfoil only. To enhance the ability of Hick-Henne function to generate various airfoil shape with limited number of functions, the positions of control points were adjusted through optimization procedure. The design procedure was applied to the single-point design for the drag minimization problem with lift and area constraints. The result shows the capability of the procedure to generate much realistic airfoils with very small drag-creep in the low transonic regime. This is mainly due to the viscosity effect of Navier-Stokes flow analysis. However, in the higher transonic range tile drag-creep appears. The multi-point design is shown to be an effective way to avoid the drag-creep and improve off-design performance which is very similar in the Euler design.
This analysis of numerical procedure is prediction of laminar flow and heat transfer at two dimension and steady flow in asymmetric sudden expansion channel. At former study, to analyse the flows with separation, the full Navier-Stokes equation is used, but there are many difficulties to analyse, and although significant progress has been made in the development of efficient computational methods for the Navier-Stokes equations, very large computation times are still required. In case of reward-facing flow, boundary-layer equation is used instead of full Navier-Stokes equation to analyse velocity fields, and result of this numerical analysis is good agreement with the given experimental study. In this case, since the computer time required for the boundary-layer calculation is an order of magnitude less than required for the solution of the full Navier-Stokes equation, this boundary-layer model provides a good approximate solution.
A finite element code for the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is parallelized by vertex-oriented domain decomposition. To accelerate the convergence of iterative solvers like conjugate gradient method, parallel block ILU, iterative block ILU, and distributed ILU methods are tested as parallel preconditioners. The effectiveness of the algorithms has been investigated when P1P1 finite element discretization is used for the parallel solution of the Navier-Stokes equation. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional Laplace equations are calculated to estimate the speedup of the preconditioners. Calculation domain is partitioned by one- and multi-dimensional partitioning methods in structured grid and by METIS library in unstructured grid. For the domain-decomposed parallel computation of the Navier-Stokes equation, we have solved three-dimensional lid-driven cavity and natural convection problems in a cube as benchmark problems using a parallelized fractional 4-step finite element method. The speedup for each parallel preconditioning method is to be compared using upto 64 processors.
Numerical characteristics of implicit upwind schemes, such as upwind ADI, line Gauss-Seidel (LGS) and point Gauss-Seidel (LU) algorithms, for Navier-Stokes equations have been investigated. Time-derivative preconditioning method was applied for efficient convergence at low Mach/Reynolds number regime as well as at large grid aspect ratios. All the algorithms were expressed in approximate factorization form and von Neumann stability analysis was performed to identify stability characteristics of the above algorithms in the presence of high grid aspect ratios. Stability analysis showed that for high aspect ratio computations, the ADI and LGS algorithms showed efficient damping effect up to moderate aspect ratio if we adopt viscous preconditioning based on min-CFL/max-VNN time-step definition. The LU algorithm, on the other hand, showed serious deterioration in stability characteristics as the grid aspect ratio increases. Computations for several practical applications also verified these results.
