  • Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is used for muscle reeducation, reduction of spasticity, delay of atrophy, and muscle strengthening. FES stronger stimulation than other forms of electrical stimulation. The efficacy of FES in improving function has been substantiated in the literature. Treatment programs employing FES - activation of muscular tissue through the intact peripheral nervous system - can be broken into five major categories, according to the goal of treatment. These broad areas would include the use of FES to: (1) a direct excitation onto the alpha motoneuron, through peripheral stimulation of the Ia myotatic sensory system and ascending afferent information, which will be integrated at conscious and subconscious level of the CNS. (2) The quality of a stimulated muscle contraction is determined by combination of many parameters, including stimulus amplitude, pulse duration, stimulus frequency, and duty cycle. (3) A unit that has a pulse duration between 200 and $400{\mu}sec$ will be more than adequate for FES applications. (4) The neuromuscular plasticity is critically important to return of function using muscle re-education and facilitation applications. (5) Prior to using FES as an electrical orthosis, the patient should build up endurance in the muscles to be stimu1ated during the gait cycle.

  • The objective of this study is to induce the design drought rainfall by the methodology of L-moment including testing homogeneity, independence and outlier of the data of annual minimum monthly rainfall in 57 rainfall stations in Korea in terms of consecutive duration for 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12 months. To select appropriate distribution of the data for annual minimum monthy rainfall by rainfall station, the distribution of generalized extreme value (GEV), generalized logistic (GLO) as well as that of generalized pareto (GPA) are applied and the appropriateness of the applied GEV, GLO, and GPA distribution is judged by L-moment ratio diagram and Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. As for the annual minimum monthly rainfall measured by rainfall station and that stimulated by Monte Carlo techniques, the parameters of the appropriately selected GEV and GPA distributions are calculated by the methodology of L-moment and the design drought rainfall is induced. Through the comparative analysis of design drought rainfall induced by GEV and GPA distribution by rainfall station, the optimal design drought rainfall by rainfall station is provided.

  • By improving body composition, such as fat, lean body mass and total body weight, an exercise program can be an effective treatment of obesity. The effects of exercise on obesity have been confirmed via various approaches such as type, intensity, duration, frequency, and combination with diet. Combined exercise and diet is the most efficient strategy for weight loss, and exercise alone could improve metabolism irrespective of weight loss. In addition, physical activity, including exercise, is emphasized to avoid a 'yo-yo' phenomenon. Exercise increases lipolysis stimulated by such factors as catecholamine, growth hormone (GH), and hormone sensitive lipase (HSL). Moreover, changes in insulin and cortisol through exercise affect adipose tissue, which is known as not only an energy storage locale, but also as an endocrine organ. Adipocytokines secreted by adipose tissue respond to signals that modulate metabolism and inflammation. Exercise has generally shown positive effects on adipocytokines, and these effects increase in conjunction with a hypocaloric diet. However, a long duration and a high intensity of exercise could induce an inflammatory response. This review summarizes the effects of exercise on obesity treatment, which contributes to the exercise and nutritional fields, particularly of community nutritionists. • In Korea, five days per week system, duration reduction bidding system, and post sale system have recently stimulated an interest in productivity improvement in construction project. However, analysis result of productivity in Korean construction industry found that the productivity is too low. APC (Architectural PC) is alternative of reveal wall and parapet in apartment housing prcjects and is used abroad broadly because of duration reduction for productivity improving. APC is used as external curtain wall in Dubai, North America, and Southeast Asia. Therefore, it is proposed that necessary to Introduce APC in Korea. The objective of this study is to draw up introduction of APC in apartment housing projects. We analysed the feasibility of the use of APC. The survey results reported that APC would be able to improve the productivity in the eight productivity factors.

  • A sorption cool pad brings cooling effect without any pre-cooling, nor any external energy supply. It uses evaporative cooling effect stimulated by the desiccative sorption. In this paper, heat and mass transfer in the sorption cool pad are investigated theoretically. The evaporative cooling process caused by the desiccant is modeled and analyzed considering the sorption characteristics of the desiccant. Two nondimensional parameters are found to dominate the cooling process: one is related to the psychrometric characteristics and the other is to the sorption capacity of the desiccant. The former decides the time to reach the lowest temperature and the later controls the time duration of the cooling effect being sustained.

  • Theoretical analysis of DF-$CO_2$ transfer chemical laser is performed through simple kinetic model consisting of 30 chemical reactions. In this model, we calculate the power theoretically by solving the rate equations, which are related to the $D_2\;+\;F_2$ chain reaction and the DF-$CO_2$ resonance energy transfer, combined with both the gain processes and the stimulated emission processes. The calculated powers are verified with previously reported results in good agreements. The output energy rises linearly with the increase in pressure, and the duration time of output pulse show the inverse dependence on pressure. Through the detailed calculation of temperature and concentrations of reactants as a function of time, it is found that the deactivation processes of DF(v) can be neglected in low pressure, but they have to be considered in high pressure. From the parametric study for the variation on [$D_2]/[F_2$] and [$CO_2]/[D_2\;+\;F_2$] at several constant total pressure, the optimum lasing conditions are found to be in a range of 1/3 to 1 and 2 to 4, respectively.

  • It has been well known that estrogens stimulate the uterine contractility and progestins inhibit it. Then, one may expect that the uterine contractility and sensitivities to oxytocin (OT) and prostaglandin $F_{2{\alpha}}\;(PGF_{2{\alpha}})$ would be different among the estrus cycle. These hypotheses were tested using the mature female rat. Spontaneous isometric contractions of isolated uterine strips $(1{\times}0.3\;cm)$ from cyclic rats in various stages of the estrus cycle, bilateral ovarectomized rats and hypophysectomized rats were recorded in absence or presence with $estradiol-17{\beta}\;(E_2)$, progesterone $(P_4)$, OT and $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$. The results were summarized as follows: 1) The spontaneous uterine contractile force was the highest in the estrus rat and the lowest in the ovarectomized or the hypophysectomized rat. In the proestrus rat, the contractile frequency was the lowest (2.7 beats/10 min) and the contractile duration was the longest (70 sec). In the other groups, there were no any differencies in frequency (9 beats/10 min) and in duration (30 sec). 2) OT and $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ stimulated the uterine contractility in all groups tested except in the hypophysectomized rat in which OT failed to stimulate the uterine contraction. $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ was more effective in stimulating the uterine contraction than OT in all groups tested except in the estrus rat. OT-induced contraction was the highest in the estrus rat and $PGF_{2{\alpha}}-induced$ contraction was the lowest in the hypophysectomized rat. 3) Uterine contractilities were not changed by the in vitro treatments of $E_2$ or $P_4$ under the influence of endogenous steroids, however, $E_2$ and $P_4$ stimulated the uterine contraction in the ovarectomized rat in which endogenous steroids were almost abolished. 4) Increased uterine contraction by the treatment of OT was suppressed by in vitro $E_2$ or $P_4$ in the estrus rat, while it was potentiated by the $P_4$ in the proestrus rat. In other groups, exogenous $E_2$ or $P_4$ did not affect the OT-induced uterine contraction. 5) $PGF_{2{\alpha}}-induced$ uterine contraction was suppressed in the ovarectomized rat by $E_2$ and $P_4$, in the diestrus and proestrus rats by $P_4$ and in the hypophysectomized rat by $E_2$. In other groups, exogenous $E_2$ or $P_4$ was ineffective in altering the $PGF_{2{\alpha}}-induced$ uterine contraction. According to the above results, it may conclude that the mechanisms of the different uterine contractility and the different uterine sensitivity to OT or $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ according to the estrus cycle are not explicable with only the serum concentrations of steroids, OT and $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ but also other unknown factors.

  • The time-dependent effects of highly intensive exercise on the hematological properties of leukocytes, as well as $CD4^+$ and $CD8^+$ level changes as T-lymphocyte activation subsets and the cell death of lymphocytes in rats were studied in this research. Twenty, 60, and 120 min of highly intensive exercise was performed daily for 8 weeks. Total leukocyte counts in the blood of rats exercising for 20 min were elevated; they then decreased to less than the level of the control group up to 120 min. The patterns of lymphocyte level changes were directly influenced by exercise duration and the extents of alteration were similar to the total leukocytes counts. The levels of $CD4^+$ and $CD8^+$ in the blood of the exercising rats were not statistically different even when the exercise was continued for 120 min; thus, the exercise did not affect T-lymphocyte activation. Early- and late-stage lymphocyte apoptosis was not affected by the length of exercise, except that late-phase apoptosis was slightly increased at 120 min, suggesting that aging processes for lymphocyte apoptosis might be stimulated at that time. As the exercise time became longer, stimulated necrosis of lymphocytes was observed, so damage in lymphocytes and a potential loss of immunity might be presumed. The current observation suggests that long-term, highly intensive exercise might result in a loss of immunity that could be due to the damage of lymphocytes in terms of both their numbers and inflammation-related functions. The results suggest that under highly intensive exercise conditions, more than 20 min of exercise should not be suggested for health care purposes.

  • The present study was to assess the effect of ultrarapid freezing on the development of 1-cell mouse zygote using cryoprotectants, DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) or PROH (1,2-propanediol). We investigated the effect of the type and concentration of cryoprotectant, and of the temperature and time of prefreezing equilibration on their capacity to develop to the blastocyst stage in vitro. The concenration, the equilibration temperature, and the exposure time seemed to serve as an important factor in ultrarapid freezing of 1-cell mouse zygotes. In addition to the exposure time and the concentration of cryoprotectant appeared to playa key role in the development of the embryo. In general, the development of the embryo was more effective at $3^{\circ}C$ than $23^{\circ}C$ and 4.5 M than 3 M for 3 to 5 minutes. At $23^{\circ}C$ the development of the embryo was stimulated by DMSO while at $3^{\circ}C$ it was stimulated by PROH. Thus it has been suggested that there exists a correlation between the concentration of cryoprotectants and exposure time in the development of the embryo. In conclusion, we found that for ultrarapid freezing of mouse 1-cell embryos in DMSO, or PROH-based solution, viability shown optimum depending on the cryoprotectant, the concentration of the cryoprotectant and on the temperature and the duration of equilibration.

  • The change of rouleau formation of red blood cells in the hand stimulated by pulse magnetic field having a maximum intensity of 0.27 Tesla and pulse duration of 0.102 msec was investigated. Before pulse magnetic field stimulus, the red blood cells of test subject were adjoined over ten and the flow of cells was slowed. However after the stimulus in the hand during 10 minutes, the red blood cells adjoined over tens was spreaded out each other and its motion was fast. Also the red blood cells of left hand unstimulated by pulse magnetic field were spreaded out each other, even though the right hand was stimulated during 10 minute. It prove that the rouleau formation of red blood cells can be improve in the whole body in spite of stimulus in the hand because the blood is flowing a whole body.
