  • Lightweight body can cause a low stiffness due to the decrease of panel thickness and reinforcing member. The other way, high stiffness body demands an increase of mass. Front pillar section area is decreased due to driver's visual field. Global vehicle stiffness is affected by stiffness distribution ratio between upper part and lower part at side body structure. This paper will describe a process used to evaluate the stiffness distribution ratio based on research of strain energy analysis of the tip rotation method. In addition, optimum design schemes are presented for high stiffness and lightweight body structure considering the investigated stiffness distribution ratio. In this way the designer will be aided by a defined design guide and a set of supporting tool to help him work towards a good design

  • Automotive wheel bearings are a critical component of vehicles that support their weight and facilitate rotation. Life and stiffness are significant performance characteristics of wheel bearings. Designing wheel bearings involves finding optimal design variables that satisfy both performances. CO2 emission reduction and fuel efficiency regulations attribute to the recent increase in design requirements for lightweight and compact automotive parts while maintaining performance. However, achieving a design that maintains performance while reducing weight poses challenges, as performance and weight are generally inversely proportional. In this study, we perform design optimization of automotive wheel bearings considering life and stiffness. We develop a program that calculates the basic rated life and modified rated life based on international standards for evaluating the life of wheel bearings. We develop a regression equation using regression analysis to address the time-consuming stiffness analysis during repetitive analysis. We perform ANOVA and main effect analyses to understand the statistical characteristics of the developed regression equation. Furthermore, we verify its reliability by comparing the predicted and test results. We perform design optimization using the developed life prediction program, stiffness regression equation and weight regression equation. We select bearing specifications and geometry as design variables, weight as the cost function, and life and stiffness as constraints. Through design optimization, we investigate the influence of design variables on the cost function and constraints by comparing the initial and optimal design values.

  • The response of multi-story building structures to lateral loads, mainly due to earthquake and wind, is investigated for preliminary design purposes. Emphasis is placed on structural systems consisting of rigid and braced steel frames. An attempt to gain a qualitative understanding of the influence of bending and shear stiffness distribution on the deformations of such structures is made. This is achieved by modeling the structure with a stiffness equivalent Timoshenko beam. It is observed that the conventional stiffness distribution, dictated by strength constraints, may not be the best to satisfy deflection criteria. This is particularly the case for slender structural systems with prevailing bending deformations, such as flexible braced frames. This suggests that a new approach to the design of such frames may be appropriate when serviceability governs. A pertinent strategy for preliminary design purposes is proposed.

  • High stiffness frame design for a spine manipulation device was developed in this research. For the safety of a spinal manipulation, high stiffness of the device is required. A finite element (FE) model of the device frame is created and validated by measured vibration data. Parameters are suggested for high stiffness design of the frame. Based on the Taguchi design of experiment (DOE), a practical set of design parameter values is suggested.

  • Now that problems with force-based seismic design have been clearly identified, design is inclined toward displacement-based methods. One such widely used method is Direct-Displacement-Based Design (DDBD). Yet, one of the shortcomings of DDBD is considering higher-mode amplification of story shear, moments, and displacements using equations obtained from limited parametric studies of regular planar frames. In this paper, a different approach to account for higher-mode effects is proposed. This approach determines the lateral secant stiffness of the building frames that fulfill the allowable inter-story drift without exceeding the desired story displacements. Using the stiffness, an elastic response spectrum analysis is carried out to determine elastic higher-mode force effects. These force effects are then combined with DDBD-obtained first-mode force effects using the appropriate modal superposition method so that design can be performed. The proposed design procedure is verified using Nonlinear Time History Analysis (NTHA) of twelve planar frames in four categories accounting for mass and stiffness irregularity along the height. In general, the NTHA response outputs compared well with the allowable limits of the performance objective. Thus, it fulfills the aim of minimizing the use of NTHA for planar frame buildings, thereby saving computational resources and effort.

  • This paper presents motion based design methodology for structures. Current design methodologies are primarily strength-based. Such methods are adequate when strength is expected to govern the design. But as the slenderness of structures increases, motion such as displacement and acceleration becomes the dominant criterion. In this paper, a preliminary design approach for beam-type buildings, where motion dominates the design, is discussed by effectively distributing the magnitude of structural stiffness to control the distribution of displacement under service load. This analytic development is illustrated using a cantilever beam as the structure under static loads, free vibration, and forced vibration.

  • This paper develops an optimized torsional design method of asymmetric wall structures considering deformation capacities of walls. Contrary to the current torsional provisions, a deformation based torsional design is based on the assumption that stiffness and strength are dependent. Current torsional provisions specify two design eccentricity of stiffness to calculate the design forces of members. But such a methodology leads to an excessive over-strength of some members and an optimal torsional behavior is not ensured. Deformation-based torsional design uses displacement and rotation angle as design parameters and calculates base shear for inelastic torsional response directly. Because optimal torsional behavior can be defined based on the deformation of members, deformation based torsional design procedure can be applied to the optimal and performance-based torsional design. To consider the effect of accidental eccentricity, an over-strength factor is defined. The over-strength factor is determined from performance level, torsional resistance and arrangement of walls.

  • A formula for estimating the elastic stiffness of TW-HDS with a uniformly tapered width from w$_{0}$ to w$_{1}$ over the length, has been analytically derived based on Euler beam theory and Castigliano's theorem. Elastic stiffnesses of the TW-HDSs designed in the same dimensional design spaces as the KOFA HDSs have been estimated from the derived formula, in addition, a sensitivity study on the elastic stiffness of the TW-HDSs has been carried out. Analysis results show that elastic stiffnesses of the TW-HDSs have been by far higher than those of the KOFA HDSs, and that, as the effects of axial and shear force on the elastic stiffness have been 0.15-0.21%, most of the elastic stiffness is attributed to the bending moment. As a result of sensitivity analysis, the elastic stiffness sensitivity at each design variable is quantified and design variables having remarkable sensitivity are identified. Among the design variables, leaf thickness is identified as that of having the most remarkable sensitivity of the elastic stiffness.

  • Diesel generator sets with resilient mounts often experience resonances by major excitations which come from diesel engine and their foundation with rigid body modes. Because their natural frequency is determined by moment of inertia and stiffness of resilient mount vibration problems are resolved by changing location and stiffness of resilient mounts. But the calculated natural frequencies are inaccurate due to uncertainty of the inertia and mount stiffness. So this result can be useless on the design stage. In this paper, the stiffness of mount is evaluated on result from mount stiffness test in laboratory and generator set vibration test and a simple calculation method for moment of inertia is proposed. Based on these data, the procedure to select optimized mount stiffness and location on the design stage is set up.
