Post-buckling analysis of piles by perturbation method

  • To investigate the critical buckling load and post-buckling behavior of an axially loaded pile entirely embedded in soil, the non-linear large deflection differential equation for a pinned pile, based on the Winkler-model and the discretionary distribution function of the foundation coefficient along pile shaft, was established by energy method. Assuming that the deflection function was a power series of some perturbation parameter according to the boundary condition and load in the pile, the non-linear large deflection differential equation was transformed to a series of linear differential equations by using perturbation approach. By taking the perturbation parameter at middle deflection, the higher-order asymptotic solution of load-deflection was then found. Effect of ratios of soil depth to pile length, and ratios of pile stiffness to soil stiffness on the critical buckling load and performance of piles (entirely embedded and partially embedded) after flexural buckling were analyzed. Results show that the buckling load capacity increases as the ratios of pile stiffness to soil stiffness increasing. The pile performance will be more stable when ratios of soil depth to pile length, and soil stiffness to pile stiffness decrease.

  • In staically indeterminate structures torsional stiffness is an important factor for prediction of mechanical behavior at all loading stages in reinfored concrete beams, which also for calculation of torsional moment. This paper proposes equation for postcracking torsional stiffness of reinforced concrete beams under pure torsion, which is derived considering the equilibrium and compatibility condition for shear panel based on the variable angle space truss model. The equation describes well the effect according to the variation of aspect ratio and steel volume ratio per unit concrete volume. It agress with experimental results in this paper as well as available literature.

  • The elastic material constants, stiffness constants ($c_{11}$, $c_{12}$, and $c_{44}$), are three unique coefficients that establish the relation between stress and strain. Accurate knowledge of mechanical properties and the stiffness coefficients for silicon is required for design of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) devices for proper modeling of stress and strain in electronic packaging. In this work, the stiffness coefficients for silicon as a function of temperature from $-150^{\circ}C$ to $+25^{\circ}C$ have been extracted by using the experimental measurements of Poisson's ratio (${\nu}$) of silicon in several directions.

Seismic analysis of RC tubular columns in air-cooled supporting structure of TPP

  • This paper aims to investigate the seismic behavior and influence parameters of the large-scaled thin-walled reinforced concrete (RC) tubular columns in air-cooled supporting structures of thermal power plants (TPPs). Cyclic loading tests and finite element analysis were performed on 1/8-scaled specimens considering the influence of wall diameter ratio, axial compression ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, stirrup reinforcement ratio and adding steel diagonal braces (SDBs). The research results showed that the cracks mainly occurred on the lower half part of RC tubular columns during the cyclic loading test; the specimen with the minimum wall diameter ratio presented the earlier cracking and had the most cracks; the failure mode of RC tubular columns was large bias compression failure; increasing the axial compression ratio could increase the lateral bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity, but also weaken the ductility and aggravate the lateral stiffness deterioration; increasing the longitudinal reinforcement ratio could efficiently enhance the seismic behavior; increasing the stirrup reinforcement ratio was favorable to the ductility; RC tubular columns with SDBs had a much higher bearing capacity and lateral stiffness than those without SDBs, and with the decrease of the angle between columns and SDBs, both bearing capacity and lateral stiffness increased significantly.

객차의 현가장치 변수가 상하진동에 미치는 영향 (Effect of the Parameter of the Suspension System on the the Vertical Vibration of the Passenger Vehicle)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the parameters of the suspension system in railway rolling-stock for KT-23 type passenger vehicle. According to the results of simulation and the field test, Optimal condition was obtained for the stiffness ratio of the primary spring and the secondary of the suspension system. When the stiffness ratio was increased, the vibration was increased on the car body and decreased on the bogie, and ride quality are getting worse because of increase of the vertical natural frequency of the car body. The results of this study are usefull to improve the technology of the ride quality of KT-23 type vehicle.

현장 재하시험을 통한 수직증축시 기존 말뚝과 보강 말뚝의 강성에 따른 하중분담거동 분석 (Analysis of Load Distribution Behavior in Vertical Extension Remodeling from Stiffness of Existing and Reinforcing Pile by Load Test)

  • 수직증축 리모델링시 상부 구조물의 구조적 안정성 확보를 위해서는 기초의 안정성이 우선적으로 확보되어야 한다. 수직증축형 리모델링 구조기준 고시(2014)에 따라, 수직증축시 기존 말뚝과 보강 말뚝의 강성에 따라 상부 하중을 분담하여 지지한다. 하지만, 국내에서는 증축시 활용할 수 있는 기초 보강공법 등에 대하여 연구 주제가 집중되어 있으며, 기존 기초와 보강 기초의 강성 차이에 의한 하중 분담율에 대한 연구는 미비하다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 현장 재하시험을 통해 수직증축 리모델링시 기존 말뚝과 보강 말뚝의 강성에 따른 하중 분담 거동에 대하여 분석을 수행하였다. 서로 강성이 다른 일반 및 파형 마이크로파일을 시공하여 기존 말뚝과 보강 말뚝을 모사하고, 각각의 말뚝에 대한 재하시험을 수행하여 각 말뚝의 강성을 산정하였다. 그 후, 기존 말뚝과 보강 말뚝 두부를 연결하는 기초판을 타설하고 기초판 상부에 하중을 재하함으로써 기존 말뚝 및 보강 말뚝의 강성 차이에 따른 하중 분담 거동을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 파형 마이크로파일의 강성이 일반 마이크로파일에 비해 약 2.5배 크게 산정되었으며, 이에 비례하여 하중을 분담하는 것을 확인하였다.

수직 하중에 따른 목재 짜맞춤 접합부의 강성도 평가 (Evaluation of Stiffness Ratio of Wooden Mortise and Tenon Joint on Vertical Loading)

  • Recently, interest in wooden construction have been growing by increasing needs and demands for eco-friendly and traditional wooden building(Hanok). Especially, Hanok has the technical development in manufacturing the mortise-tenon joint without fasteners(precut), so it could be called to modernization, industrialization and popularization. But the structural design and analysis of the structure were not regulated and had the difficulty to consider the variation of wooden member and to conduct the difficulty in the structural analysis and the design of the joint. In this study, the stiffness ratio of wooden mortise and tenon joint was evaluated according to the vertical loading, lintel and loading speed. The joint was distinguished in semi-rigid joint regardless of their factors. The stiffness ratio was 0.40 in vertical loading, 0.50 without vertical loading and 0.44 in horizontal loading with high speed. This study would be utilized to the structural analysis and design with structural analysis and design program.

The empirical corner stiffness for right-angle frames of rectangular and H-type cross-sections

  • Until now, the finite corner stiffness of the right-angle frames used as horizontal girders in a bonnet, have not been considered during the design process to result in not a precise result. This paper presents a design equation set for right-angle frames used as horizontal girders in a bonnet assuming rigid corner stiffness. By comparing the center stresses of the right-angle frame according to the design equation set with the results of the finite element method, the master curves for the empirical corner stiffness can be determined as a function of slenderness ratio. A second design equation set for a right-angle frame assuming finite corner stiffness was derived and compared with the first equation set. The master curves for the corner stiffness and the second design equation set can be used to determine the design moments at the centers of the girder so that the bending stresses can be analyzed more precisely.

  • Concrete tracks are superior to ballast tracks in the aspect of durability, maintenance and safety. However, deteriorated stiffness of railroad bed and settlement of soft ground induced by trapped or seepage water lead to problems in safety of train operation. In this research, characteristic stiffness of concrete tracks, which is determined from FRACTAL (Flexural-Rigidity Assessment of Concrete Tracks by Antisymmetric Lamb Waves) technique, was employed as an index of track displacement. The characteristic stiffness is defined using Poisson's ratio, moment of inertia and stiffness ratio of subgrade to slab. To verify validity and reliability of the proposed characteristic stiffness, experimental and theoretical researches were performed. Feasibility of the characteristic stiffness based on FRACTAL technique was proved at a real concrete track for Korean high-speed trains. Validity of the FRACTAL technique was also verified by comparing the results of impulse-response tests performed at the same measurement array and the results of SASW tests and DC resistivity survey performed at a shoulder nearby the track.

MARS inverse analysis of soil and wall properties for braced excavations in clays

  • A major concern in deep excavation project in soft clay deposits is the potential for adjacent buildings to be damaged as a result of the associated excessive ground movements. In order to accurately determine the wall deflections using a numerical procedure such as the finite element method, it is critical to use the correct soil parameters such as the stiffness/strength properties. This can be carried out by performing an inverse analysis using the measured wall deflections. This paper firstly presents the results of extensive plane strain finite element analyses of braced diaphragm walls to examine the influence of various parameters such as the excavation geometry, soil properties and wall stiffness on the wall deflections. Based on these results, a multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) model was developed for inverse parameter identification of the soil relative stiffness ratio. A second MARS model was also developed for inverse parameter estimation of the wall system stiffness, to enable designers to determine the appropriate wall size during the preliminary design phase. Soil relative stiffness ratios and system stiffness values derived via these two different MARS models were found to compare favourably with a number of field and published records.
