  • A new tetrahydroanthracene, 3,6,9-trihydroxy-3,4-dihydroanthracen-1(2H)-one (1), six phenolics, moscatilin (2), gigantol (3), batatasin (4), moscatin (5), 9,10-dihydromoscatin (6), 10-dihydrophenanthrene-2,4,7-triol (7), and a sesquiterpenoid, corchoionoside C (8), together with two sterols $\beta$-sitosterol (9) and daucosterol (10), were isolated from the stems of Dendrobium polyanthum. Compounds 1 and 2 were assessed for cytotoxic activity against two human tumor cell lines (A549 and HL-60).

  • In order to investigate the hepatoprotective constituents, Melonis Pedicellus was systematically extracted and fractionated with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water Treatment of rats with ethyl acetate fraction reduced hepatic injuries induced by $\alpha$-naphthylisothiocyanate or D-galactosamine, whereas the components in water fraction showed protective effect only against D-galactosamine-induced hepatitis in rats. Two cucurbitacins and three sterols were isolated from ethylacetate fraction and their chemical structures were identified as cucurbitacin B, isocucurbitacin B, $\alpha$-spinasterol, stigmast-7-en-3-ol and stigmast-7-en-3-ol-0-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside. Cucurbitacin B at the dose of 1 mg/kg (p.o.) signifcantly increased in bile flow in rats with ANIT-induced cholestasis. Isocucurbitacin B at 5 mg/hg (p.o.) showed signilicant protective effects against ANIT-induced cholestasis. These results showed that cucurbitacin B and isocucurbitacin B from Melonis Pedicellus may have hepatoprotective effect in rats with experimental cholestasis.

  • The carpophores of Phallus impudicus collected at Gal-mae-ri in Gyeong-gi Province were subjected to chemical analysis for sterol constituents. The dried carpophores were homogenized and extracted with chloroform-methanol(2 : 1). After saponification of the dried extract, unsaponified components were obtained by ether extraction of the reaction mixture. A sterol fraction was separated by preparative TLC and from this fraction, ergosterol was identified by gaschromatographic analysis with authentic sterols.

  • An investigation of the MeOH soluble fractions of marine sponge Psammocinia sp. (Order: Dictyoceratida) led to the isolation of a new epidioxy sterol (1) and four known sterols (2-5). Their planar structures were defined by analyses of the spectroscopic data. The 27-nor-24-methylcholestan type side chain with an epidioxy nucleus (1) was unprecedented. Compounds 1-5 were isolated from a sponge Psammocinia sp. for the first time.

  • Ten terpenes (1-10), two sterols (11 and 12), and two unusual phenylpropanoids (13 and 14) were isolated from the brittle star Ophioplocus japonicus (Family Ophiuridae). Their structures were identified by analyses of the spectral data and by comparison with the literature data. The terpenes (1-10) and phenylpropanoids (13 and 14) are first encountered in brittle stars. These compounds were evaluated for cytotoxicity against a small panel of human solid tumor cell lines. Compounds 6-10 and 14 displayed moderate to significant cytotoxicity. The compounds were evaluated for antibacterial activity against 20 clinically isolated strains. Compound 5 exhibited antibacterial activities against three Streptococcus and three Staphylococcus strains.

  • Angelica flaccida Kom. is a herbal plant growing wild in the marsh of valley in Korea. It has been used for sedative and analgesic as a folk medicine, but its constituents have not been clarified yet. Five known coumarins such as isoimperatorin, decursidin, (-) anomalin, decursin, decursinol and two sterols such as ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and stigmasterol were isolated from the root of this plant, Their structures were identified by the UV, IR, NMR, mass data and the physico-chemical properties.

  • General components and detergency of commercial shampoos have been investigated and the results are summerized in the following. Shampoos were analyzed for surfactants and additives by KS method and surfactants were confirmed by T.L.C. Considerable differences in amounts of non volatiles and surfactants were found. Three of them contain either lanoline or sterols as additives and in the three. propylene glycol was found in their liquid part. It was shown that predominant sufactant was anionic and in all, except one. a little ampholytic surfactant was detected. But, contrary to forecast, in only one a little of non ionic surfactant was detected. Detergency of shampoos was examined using artificially soiled wool muslin. Considerable difference was found, and all shampoos showed higher detergency than a synthetic powder type detergent for textiles. There were no significant correlation between detergency and amount of surfactants or suspending power of detergents.
