  • A design of I-PDA controller for the third order plant by CDM is presented in this paper. Using CDM in the controller design procedures, the step responses of the controlled system with the I-PDA controller satisfied both transient and steady state response specifications without adjustment, and also satisfy the requirements of stability, faster response and robustness. The step responses of the controlled system using I-PDA controller are coiniciding to the ones using PIDA controller, and the integral gain of the I-PDA controller also equals to the prefilter gain of the PIDA controller designed by CDM. The effect of the disturbances can also be lastly eliminated. The fast step response of the controlled system can be obtained by reducing the equivalent time constant. MATLAB's numerical results show that the desired specifications of the controlled system using I-PDA controller is obtained. Furthermore, the results also show a good robustness that the desired performances of the controlled system have no significant changed when the plant parameters are varied.

  • The performance of variable dampers for seismic protection of the benchmark highway bridge (phase I) under six real earthquake ground motions is presented. A simplified lumped mass finite-element model of the 91/5 highway bridge in Southern California is used for the investigation. A variable damper, developed from magnetorheological (MR) damper is used as a semi-active control device and its effectiveness with friction force schemes is investigated. A velocity-dependent damping model of variable damper is used. The effects of friction damping of the variable damper on the seismic response of the bridge are examined by taking different values of friction force, step-coefficient and transitional velocity of the damper. The seismic responses with variable dampers are compared with the corresponding uncontrolled case, and controlled by alternate sample control strategies. The results of investigation clearly indicate that the base shear, base moment and mid-span displacement are substantially reduced. In particular, the reduction in the bearing displacement is quite significant. The friction and the two-step friction force schemes of variable damper are found to be quite effective in reducing the peak response quantities of the bridge to a level similar to or better than that of the sample passive, semi-active and active controllers.

  • To design a controller based on the pole placement method, it is necessary to obtain either a target transfer function or a desired characteristic equation which results in the closed-loop response. Specially, a step response in which no overshoot occurs in highly desirable in many applications. In this paper, we present two new present two new prototypes of Type I target transfer functions whose step responses have an overshoot of less than 0.1%. One prototype is obtained by Taylor's approximation of a Gaussian function. It is, however, observed that the response delays increase with increasing order, while the rise times are nearly constant. The other prototype is a modification of the first prototype, so that their transfer function coefficients have particular values in terms of specific parameters ${\gamma}$i and $\tau$ (see section 2). The second prototype gives very useful properties in which step responses are almost the same shape, irrespective of the order. It, also, has no overshoot. Some other properties of the prototypes and an application example are given.

  • In this study, the effect of the time step specified in a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation on load response is analyzed and the drag coefficients of the floating body of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) are estimated. By evaluating the error in the FOWT load response and the change in the drag-coefficient values based on the density of the time intervals, this study aims to establish a time-interval setting that minimizes the time and cost of CFD simulations for selecting drag-coefficient values. Practical CFD utilization strategies necessary for the calibration of medium-to high-fidelity analysis tools are presented. Based on a comparative analysis of CFD simulations conducted at various time intervals, the results confirmed that under a certain time interval that sufficiently considers various factors, the accuracy of the FOWT response with respect to density shows minimal differences, thereby providing an efficient utilization method for CFD simulations in FOWT design and analysis.

  • While job stress evaluations are reported in the recent surveys upon the nuclear power plants(NPPs), any significant advance in the types of questionnaires is not currently found. There are limitations to their usefulness as analytic tools for the management of safety resources in NPPs. Data mining(DM) has emerged as one of the key features for data computing and analysis to conduct a survey analysis. There are still limitations to its capability such as dimensionality associated with many survey questions and quality of information. Even though some survey methods may have significant advantages, often these methods do not provide enough evidence of causal relationships and the statistical inferences among a large number of input factors and responses. In order to address these limitations on the data computing and analysis capabilities, we propose an advanced procedure of survey analysis incorporating the DM method into a statistical analysis. The DM method can reduce dimensionality of risk factors, but DM method may not discuss the robustness of solutions, either by considering data preprocesses for outliers and missing values, or by considering uncontrollable noise factors. We propose three steps to address these limitations. The first step shows data mining with response surface method(RSM), to deal with specific situations by creating a new method called response surface data mining(RSDM). The second step follows the RSDM with detailed statistical relationships between the risk factors and the response of interest, and shows the demonstration the proposed RSDM can effectively find significant physical, psycho-social, and environmental risk factors by reducing the dimensionality with the process providing detailed statistical inferences. The final step suggest a robust stress management system which effectively manage job stress of the workers in NPPs as a part of a safety resource management using the surrogate variable concept.

  • This paper presents a digital pulse width modulator (DPWM) with a reduced digital modulation delay (a transport delay of the modulator) during the transient response of power converters. During the transient response operation of a power converter, as a result of dynamic variations such as load step-up or step-down, the closed loop controller will continuously adjust the duty cycle in order to regulate the output voltage. The larger the modulation delays, the larger the undesired output voltage deviation from the reference point. The three conventional DPWM techniques exhibit significant leading-edge and/or trailing-edge modulation delays. The DPWM technique proposed in this paper, which results in modulation delay reductions, is discussed, experimentally tested and compared with conventional modulation techniques.

  • In this paper, the vibrations of floor systems of which buildings are under construction are studied by experimental and analysis method. The first step is to measure the operational response data and FRF at the supporting points of the utility and the second step is to calculate the dynamic load by TPA Method which provided by LMS VirtualLab System Analysis Module. The dynamics we used to identify is expressed by below equation; $$\{F_{oper}\}=[H]^{-1}\;{\cdot}\;\{{.. \atop x_{oper}}\}$$ Where, H(Transfer function between position of the force and response) and x(response) are measured by vibration test.

  • This paper presents a new uniaxial material model for rate-sensitive analysis addressing both the transient and steady-state responses. The new model adopts visco-plastic theory for the rate-sensitive response, and employs a three-parameter representation of the overstress as a function of the strain-rate. The third parameter is introduced in the new model to control its transient response characteristics, and to provide flexibility in fitting test data on the variation of overstress with strain-rate. Since the governing visco-plastic differential equation cannot be integrated analytically due to its inherent nonlinearity, a new single-step numerical integration procedure is proposed, which leads to high levels of accuracy almost independent of the size of the integration time-step. The new model is implemented within the nonlinear analysis program ADAPTIC, which is used to provide several verification examples and comparison with other experimental and numerical results. The companion paper extends the three-parameter model to trilinear static stress-strain relationships for steel and concrete, and presents application examples of the proposed models.

  • In order to perform a step-by-step force-displacement response analysis or dynamic time-history analysis of large buildings with masonry infilled R/C frames, a continuous force-deformation model based on an equivalent strut approach is proposed for masonry infill panels containing openings. The model, which is applicable for degrading elements, can be implemented to replicate a wide range of monotonic force-displacement behaviour, resulting from different design and geometry, by varying the control parameters of the model. The control parameters of the proposed continuous model are determined using experimental data. The experimental program includes fifteen 1/3-scale, single-story, single-bay reinforced concrete frame specimens subjected to lateral cyclic loading. The parameters investigated include the shape, the size, the location of the opening and the infill compressive strength. The actual properties of the infill and henceforth the characteristics needed for the diagonal strut model are based on the assessment of its lateral resistance by the subtraction of the response of the bare frame from the response of the infilled frame.
