Oil, hysteretic and inertial mass dampers are representatives of passive dampers used for smart enhancement of seismic performance of building structures. Since oil dampers have a nonlinear relief mechanism and hysteretic dampers possess nonlinear restoring-force characteristics, several difficulties arise in the evaluation of buildings including such dampers. The purpose of this paper is to propose a practical method for simultaneous optimal use of such dampers. The optimum design problem is formulated so as to minimize the maximum interstory drift under design earthquakes in terms of a set of damper quantities subject to an equality constraint on the total cost of dampers. The proposed method to solve the optimum design problem is a successive procedure which consists of two steps. The first step is a sensitivity analysis by using nonlinear time-history response analyses, and the second step is a modification of the set of damper quantities based upon the sensitivity analysis. Numerical examples are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the proposed design method.
Recently, machine learning is widely used to solve optimization problems in various engineering fields. In this study, machine learning is applied to development of a control algorithm for a smart control device for reduction of seismic responses. For this purpose, Deep Q-network (DQN) out of reinforcement learning algorithms was employed to develop control algorithm. A single degree of freedom (SDOF) structure with a smart tuned mass damper (TMD) was used as an example structure. A smart TMD system was composed of MR (magnetorheological) damper instead of passive damper. Reward design of reinforcement learning mainly affects the control performance of the smart TMD. Various hyper-parameters were investigated to optimize the control performance of DQN-based control algorithm. Usually, decrease of the time step for numerical simulation is desirable to increase the accuracy of simulation results. However, the numerical simulation results presented that decrease of the time step for reward calculation might decrease the control performance of DQN-based control algorithm. Therefore, a proper time step for reward calculation should be selected in a DQN training process.
In this study, it is intended to perform nonlinear time-history analyses of nuclear power plant structures (NPP) under near-fault earthquakes showing directivity pulse and fling-step characteristics. Simulation procedures based on cycloidal pulse and far-fault ground motions are also used to simulate near-fault motions showing forward-directivity and fling-step characteristics and the structural responses are compared with those of the recorded near-fault ground motions. Because it is aimed to determine specifically the pulse type characteristics of near-fault ground motions on NPPs, all the ground motions are normalized to have a PGA of 0.3 g. Depending on the obtained results it can be underlined that although near-fault ground motion has the potential to cause damage mostly on structural systems having larger periods, it may also have noticeable effects on the responses of rigid structures, like NPP containment buildings. On the other hand, simulated near-fault motions can help us to get an insight into the near-fault mechanism as well as an approximate visualization of the structural responses under near-fault earthquakes.
This paper explores the concept of enhanced smart tourism as a response to the challenges and opportunities arising in the post-pandemic tourism landscape. The COVID-19 pandemic has not only halted the global tourism industry but also prompted a reevaluation of its sustainability, technological integration, and impact on local communities. The need for a paradigm shift in tourism is emphasized, focusing on digitalization, innovation, and resilience. Enhanced smart tourism is characterized by a shift from traditional practices to innovative governance models, increased emphasis on sustainability, and the integration of technology for better management and visitor experiences. The paper discusses the four pillars of enhanced smart tourism - Technology, Sustainability, Accessibility/Mobility, and Innovation/Creativity, and their expansion in the post-pandemic era. Furthermore, the significant role of data in smart tourism is examined, highlighting the importance of data valuation, management, and ethics. The paper proposes frameworks and methods for data valuation and emphasizes the necessity of a comprehensive approach to data within the smart tourism ecosystem. The conclusion points to the need for further empirical and conceptual research to fully realize the potential of enhanced smart tourism.
This paper proposes a high efficiency step-down flyback converter using a coaxial-cable coupled-inductor which has a higher primary-secondary flux linkage than sandwich winding transformers. The structure of the two-winding coaxial cable transformer is described, and the coupling coefficient of the coaxial cable transformer and that of a sandwich winding transformer are compared. A circuit model of the proposed transformer is also obtained from the frequency-response curves of the secondary short-circuit and of the secondary open-circuit. Finally, the performance of the proposed transformer is validated by the experimental results from a 35W single-output flyback converter prototype. In addition, the proposed two-winding coaxial transformer is extended to a multiple winding coaxial application. For the performance evaluation of the extended version, 35W multi-output hardware prototype of the DC-DC flyback converter was tested.
The paper presents a finite element model for studying timber-concrete composite beams under long-term loading. Both deformability of connection system and rheological behaviour of concrete, timber and connection are fully considered. The creep of component materials and the influence of moisture content on the creep of timber and connection, the so-called "mechano-sorptive" effect, are evaluated by means of accurate linear models. The solution is obtained by applying an effective step-by-step procedure in time, which does not require storing the whole stress history in some points in order to account for the creep behaviour. Hence the proposed method is suitable for analyses of composite beams subjected to complex loading and thermo-hygrometric histories. The possibility to accurately predict the long-term response is then shown by comparing numerical and experimental results for different tests.
In this paper, an attempt has been made to design the current and speed proportional and integral (PI) regulators of self-commutating current source inverter-fed induction motor drive having capacitors at the machine end and to investigate the transient performance of the same for step changes in reference speed. The mathematical model of the complete drive system is developed in closed loop, and the characteristic equations of the systems are derived using perturbation about steady-state operating point in order to develop the characteristic equations. The D-partition technique is used for finding the stable region in the parametric plane. Frequency scanning technique is used to confirm the stability region. Final selection of the regulator parameters is done by comparing the transient response of the current and speed loops for step variations in reference. The performance of the drive is observed analytically through MATLAB simulation.
CALS is recognized as a national response to the new chapter of information society. It is essential that the standardization in Korea should be constructed compatible with not only domestic but also international standardization trend. This study aims to propose a proper direction of CALS standardization in Korea, based on the international CALS standardization movement. This paper classifies standard into five types and provides a proper direction and guidance far each standard. As a trend of CALS standard, all ten data files are converted using SGML standard far the interchangeability of data among heterogenous systems. CAD and Graphic data arc also moving toward to the STEP as their standard. In this regard, this paper discusses how to implement SGML and STEP Model. Finally, this paper proposes a method how to construct an EDI system with CALS standard and how to establish a standard authorization institute which will be responsible far the standard authorization. Furthermore, this paper also proposes the CALS Test Network (CTN) as its experimental method.
An experimental and theoretical analysis for the improvement of dynamic characteristics and design of electro-hydraulic flow control servo valve are performed. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental step responses, and the important design parameters of an electro-hydraulic flow control servo valve are derived by using the simulation program. Simulation parameters of nozzle jet coefficient and orifice and spool valve discharge coefficient are given through experiment. The theoretical and experimental step response curves show that the valve gain depends on the fixed orifice and nozzle $ratio(R_on)$ and is maximum at $R_on=1.$ And drain orifice in the flapper - nozzle return line creates a small back pressure, which improves the performance fur the valve.
Due to the high efficiency and compact mechanical structure, direct drive variable speed generators are used for power conversion in wind turbines. The wind energy conversion system (WECS) considered in this paper consists of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), uncontrolled rectifier, dc-dc boost converter controlled with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and adaptive hysteresis controlled voltage source inverter (VSI). For high utilization of the converter's power capability and stabilizing voltage and power flow, constant DC-link voltage is essential. Step and search MPPT algorithm which senses the rectified voltage ($V_{DC}$) alone and controls the same is used to effectively maximize the output power. The adaptive hysteresis band current control is characterized by fast dynamic response and constant switching frequency. With MPPT and adaptive hysteresis band current control in VSI, the DC link voltage is maintained constant under variable wind speeds and transient grid currents respectively.
